Yes. Connect the PS4’s HDMI OUT port to an HDMI input on the monitor, then select that input on the monitor. Picture and sound are separate questions: some monitors have no speakers or audio output, so check the monitor’s ports and specifications before choosing an audio setup.
Connect a PS4 to a monitor with HDMI
- Turn off or put the PS4 and monitor in standby before connecting them.
- Plug an HDMI cable into the PS4’s HDMI OUT port and the other end into the monitor’s HDMI input. This is Sony’s standard PS4-to-screen connection: Sony’s PS4 setup guide.
- Turn on the monitor and select the HDMI input you used, if it does not switch automatically.
- Turn on the PS4. If the screen stays blank, check that both cable ends are seated and that the monitor is on the correct input.
If the monitor still shows no image, check its manual or specifications to confirm it supports the PS4’s output signal. For an HDR setup, Sony specifies a Premium HDMI cable, a 2K or 4K display that supports HDR10, HDR-capable content, and PS4 system software version 7.0 or later. Set the PS4’s HDR and Deep Colour output settings to Automatic. Sony’s HDR instructions specify a direct connection rather than routing the console through a receiver or switch box: Sony’s PS4 HDR setup guide.
Choose how to get sound
HDMI can carry audio as well as video, but the monitor must support a way to play or pass that audio. Features differ by model; check the monitor’s specifications and ports.

Monitor speakers
If the monitor has built-in speakers, check its volume and mute settings. Some monitors do not have speakers at all, as LG’s monitor audio guidance notes.

Monitor headphone output
If the monitor has a headphone output, connect headphones or powered speakers to it. Confirm that the port is an audio output and that the monitor passes HDMI audio through it. Some Samsung monitors support this arrangement, but it is not universal: Samsung’s monitor headphone guidance.
Headphones connected to the controller
Connect a compatible headset to the controller and open Settings > Devices > Audio Devices > Output to Headphones. Sony says the default is Chat Audio; choose the available output appropriate to whether you want chat or all audio. See Sony’s PS4 audio-output instructions.

Optical audio
Optical audio is an option only if both the console and the audio device have optical connections. PS4 revisions differ: Sony states that the CUH-2000 series does not have an optical digital output. Check the console model and audio equipment before relying on this route; Sony lists the model caveat in its PS4 audio-output guidance.

A VGA-only monitor needs an HDMI-to-VGA converter to receive video from a PS4. Check that the converter is designed for an HDMI source and VGA display, whether it needs USB power, and whether its supported resolution matches the monitor.

VGA does not carry audio. ASUS explains that audio is discarded when HDMI is converted to VGA, so plan a separate audio route, such as a compatible headset connected to the controller. Converter features vary, so verify whether a particular unit offers a separate audio output: ASUS’s HDMI-to-VGA audio guidance. Do not assume HDMI-to-DVI will solve audio either; Samsung notes that HDMI-to-DVI does not carry audio to its monitor headphone jack in its monitor headphone guidance.

Sony says HDCP is enabled by default on PS4 HDMI output. If a connected device is not HDCP-compatible, the PS4 may output neither video nor audio. Sony’s setting is Settings > System > Enable HDCP. Disabling HDCP is for gameplay only; Blu-ray and DVD playback, as well as DRM-protected streaming, require HDCP enabled. It is not a general fix for every display problem. See Sony’s PS4 audio and HDCP guidance.
