Yes. On a computer, upload your PowerPoint file to Google Drive, open it with Google Slides, then use Slides’ conversion option to create a native Google Slides copy. Opening the file without converting is different: Google says edits can remain saved in the original PowerPoint format.
Convert a PowerPoint file into Google Slides on a computer
- Open Google Drive and select New > File upload.
- Choose your PowerPoint file and wait for the upload to finish.
- Find the uploaded file in Drive, right-click it, and select Open with > Google Slides.
- In the Slides workflow, choose the option to convert the Office file to Google Slides. Google says conversion creates a copy, leaving the uploaded PowerPoint as a separate file. See Google’s Slides conversion instructions.
Opening the file is not the same as converting it
If you open a PowerPoint file in Slides and keep editing it in Office format, Google says your changes are saved to the original Microsoft Office file. Google’s switching guide also describes opening a file in Drive by double-clicking it and choosing Open with Google Slides.
| What you do | Result | When it fits |
|---|---|---|
| Open and edit the Office file in Slides | Edits can be saved to the original PowerPoint-format file. | You want to work in Slides while retaining the Office file format. |
| Convert the Office file | Google creates a separate native Slides copy; the uploaded PowerPoint remains distinct. | You need a Google Slides file or Slides-specific features. |
Google lists features such as add-ons, Apps Script, protected ranges, and translation options as reasons to convert. The official guidance does not provide a complete feature-by-feature compatibility matrix, so review the converted deck before sharing or presenting it.

Can you convert PowerPoint on a phone?
Google’s Android help says the Slides app can import and edit PPT, PPTX, and ODP files, and export presentations to PPTX, PDF, TXT, and ODP. This establishes that Android Slides can work with PowerPoint files, but it does not establish that every mobile app version has the same native-conversion controls as the computer workflow. See Google’s Office-file guidance and its Slides for Android help.
