Yes. You can charge a laptop in a car with a compatible USB-C Power Delivery (PD) car charger plugged into the 12 V accessory socket, or by using a vehicle power inverter with the laptop’s regular AC adapter. The right choice depends on the laptop’s charging requirements and the output limits of the specific car outlet. Check both manuals before connecting anything.
Choose a charging method that matches your laptop
Start by checking how your laptop accepts power. A USB-C connector does not, by itself, mean the port supports charging or that it can take power at the rate your laptop needs. Look up the laptop maker’s charging specification and compare it with the output of the car’s charging source.
USB-C PD car charger
If your laptop supports USB-C PD charging, a compatible car charger can connect to the 12 V accessory socket and deliver power directly over USB-C. This avoids converting the car’s DC power to AC and then back through the laptop adapter. Match the charger’s supported output and the cable to the laptop’s requirements, and confirm the vehicle socket can handle the charger.
Eaton lists the U280-C02-100W dual-port USB car charger with a 100 W maximum output. That is the rating of this charger, not a universal requirement for laptops. The U.S. Department of Energy’s USB Power Delivery discussion provides background on the charging standard.

Power inverter and the laptop’s AC adapter
If your laptop uses a conventional AC adapter, or direct USB-C charging is unsuitable, a vehicle power inverter can convert the car’s DC power to AC so you can use that adapter. Check the inverter’s continuous output and the vehicle socket’s maximum rating. Count other devices drawing power from the same outlet, too; the usable limit is not the inverter’s rating alone if the vehicle outlet permits less.
Built-in USB port or factory AC inverter
A factory USB port or AC inverter can work only if its output meets the laptop’s needs. Do not assume a port is suitable based on its connector or appearance: consult the exact vehicle manual for its output rating. For example, the 2026 Kia EV3 manual describes an optional 115 V, 150 W AC inverter and warns that some devices may not work because of startup demand or a need for stable power.

Check the vehicle’s actual power limits
Car outlet ratings vary by vehicle. The following figures are examples from the named manuals, not general ratings for all cars:

The Mazda example shows why a car’s built-in USB port and its 12 V socket should not be treated as equivalent: the published USB-C output is much lower than the socket’s maximum. Whether that USB port can charge a particular laptop depends on the laptop’s input requirements.

Compare the laptop, charger, and car before plugging in
- Check the laptop: Find out whether it accepts USB-C PD and what input power its manufacturer recommends. If you plan to use AC, check the requirements printed on the laptop’s adapter.
- Check the vehicle: Find the power outlet section in the owner’s manual for the exact model and year. Note the maximum output and whether the outlet is intended to operate with the vehicle on or off.
- Check the charging equipment: For USB-C PD, compare the charger’s supported output and cable with the laptop’s requirements. For an inverter, compare its continuous output with the AC adapter’s needs, while also staying within the car’s outlet limit.
- Account for shared power: If other devices use the same outlet or inverter, include their draw when checking the vehicle’s limit.
- Connect and monitor: Seat the plug securely, then confirm the laptop indicates that it is charging. Stop if a plug or outlet becomes unusually hot, or if the setup does not behave as expected.
Use the outlet safely, especially when parked
- Stay within the manual’s rating. Ford warns that overloading its outlet can blow a fuse and may cause damage, fire, or personal injury.
- Seat the plug fully. Mazda warns that an insecure accessory-plug connection may heat excessively and blow a fuse.
- Do not assume an engine-off outlet is harmless to the battery. Some outlets can draw from the battery while parked. Ford cautions against prolonged use with the vehicle off, and Kia says to use its power outlet only when the vehicle is on. Follow your own vehicle’s instructions and unplug the charger when finished.
- Ventilate if the engine must run. The U.S. Department of Energy advises operating a vehicle in a well-ventilated place when recharging mobile devices; once danger has passed, moving it out of a garage is safest. Never run a car in an enclosed garage.
