A 2014 laboratory study showed that hollow microtubes made mainly from human serum albumin could capture Escherichia coli (E. coli) from water. It did not demonstrate a ready-to-use drinking-water purifier: the result applies to a particular experimental material and bacterium, not to all pathogens or contaminants.
What did the researchers make?
S. Yuge, M. Akiyama and T. Komatsu reported the work in the 2014 paper “An Escherichia coli trap in human serum albumin microtubes” in Chemical Communications. They fabricated hollow microtubes from human serum albumin (HSA), a human blood protein. A contemporaneous account describes alternating layers of HSA and poly-L-arginine deposited on a polycarbonate template; dissolving the template left hollow tubes.
The researchers reported that E. coli entered and was trapped in the tubes’ one-dimensional interior pore space. The proposed explanation combined the bacterium’s binding affinity for HSA with the tubes’ geometry. This is a designed material capturing bacteria—not proof that ordinary human protein, by itself, makes water safe.
How well did the microtubes capture E. coli?
A 2014 Scientific American report gave a specific experimental figure: 1.5 micrograms of microtubes per liter of contaminated water containing 100,000 bacteria, with almost 100% removal. That is a reported result for the study’s laboratory setup, not a certified performance rating or a general guarantee for other water samples. The paper’s abstract describes extremely high-efficiency E. coli trapping but does not state that exact sample statistic.

What did the magnetic version add?
The study also describes microtubes containing magnetite (Fe3O4). A magnetic field could manipulate these tubes, allowing them to be collected from the solution. This addresses how the experimental material might be retrieved; it does not establish that the treated water meets a drinking-water standard.
What does the study not show?
- Broad contaminant removal: The demonstrated target was E. coli. The cited sources do not establish capture of other bacteria, viruses, parasites, dissolved chemicals or other contaminants.
- Safe drinking water: The reported bacterial-capture result is not evidence that the resulting water was tested against or met a drinking-water standard.
- Practical deployment: The sources establish a laboratory research result, not household or municipal operation, scale-up, regulatory approval or a commercially available purifier. They do not establish whether such a product is currently sold or deployed.
Komatsu was quoted in the contemporaneous report saying the protein-based tubes were “safe for medical use.” That comment concerns a proposed medical-use context; it is not a finding that water treated in the experiment is safe to drink or that the method has regulatory approval.
