Yes—HDMI 2.0 can support 120Hz at 1080p and often at 1440p, provided the source and display support that exact mode. It generally does not deliver full-quality 4K at 120Hz; that normally requires HDMI 2.1 on both ends. The resolution, color settings, and any receiver, dock, or adapter in the signal path matter as much as the refresh-rate number.
Which 120Hz modes can HDMI 2.0 handle?
| Video mode | HDMI 2.0 outlook | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| 1080p at 120Hz | Yes, if the source and display accept it. HDMI’s specification overview lists 1080p/120 even under HDMI 1.4b. | Confirm that the display supports 120Hz through the HDMI input you are using. |
| 1440p at 120Hz | Often possible, but not guaranteed. | Check the exact input’s timing support, source output, HDR, color depth, chroma, VRR, and firmware. |
| 4K at 60Hz | Yes; HDMI 2.0 was designed for 4K at 50/60Hz. | For full 18-Gbps-class operation, use suitable ports and a certified Premium High Speed HDMI cable. |
| 4K at 120Hz | Normally not at full-quality, uncompressed RGB/4:4:4 over a standard HDMI 2.0 connection. | Use HDMI 2.1-capable source and display for the usual 4K/120 path. Any reduced-format exception must be explicitly listed by the device manufacturer. |
HDMI 2.0 provides up to 18 Gbps of bandwidth and supports 4K/50–60Hz, according to the HDMI Forum’s HDMI 2.0 announcement. HDMI 2.1 introduced formats including 4K/120 and up to 48 Gbps for the relevant Ultra High Speed HDMI configuration; see the HDMI Forum’s HDMI 2.1 announcement.
Why does resolution change the answer?
Refresh rate is how often a display updates its image each second. Frame rate is how many frames a game or application renders each second. A 120Hz display can accept or show a 120Hz signal, but it cannot make a 60-fps game render at 120 fps. The source, application or game, and display all need to support the desired mode.

The signal’s bandwidth demand rises with resolution and refresh rate, and can also rise with greater color depth and less-compressed chroma. HDR and VRR compatibility can further constrain which combinations a specific device offers. That is why a port that handles 1080p/120 may not offer 1440p/120 with HDR, or 4K/120 at all.

In HDMI’s official specification overview, 1080p/120 is listed among HDMI 1.4b capabilities. That supports the conclusion that 1080p/120 is within HDMI 2.0’s capability in principle; it does not guarantee that every television, monitor, or computer exposes that mode.
Is 1440p at 120Hz guaranteed by HDMI 2.0?
No. HDMI 2.0’s bandwidth can be sufficient for many 1440p/120 configurations, but manufacturers determine which timings each input accepts. Some monitors offer 1440p/120 over DisplayPort while limiting HDMI to 1440p/60 or 1080p/120. Others support 1440p/120 but restrict HDR, VRR, color depth, or chroma at that setting.

Before relying on 1440p/120, check these details in the source and display specifications or manuals:
- The exact HDMI input’s supported resolution and refresh-rate combinations; do not infer input capability from the panel’s advertised maximum refresh rate.
- Whether the source outputs 1440p/120, including over HDMI.
- Whether 120Hz is available with the HDR and VRR settings you want.
- Whether the display accepts 1440p from your particular source. This matters especially with consoles and TVs.
- Whether an on-screen setting, firmware update, or different HDMI input is required.
What to expect from PS5 and Xbox
PS5
Sony identifies PS5 as supporting HDMI 2.1 and 4K/120 output. On an HDMI 2.0 display, 1080p/120 may work, and 1440p/120 may work if both the console and display support that mode. Do not expect standard HDMI 2.0 to provide full-quality 4K/120.

If 4K/120 is missing on a compatible setup, Sony recommends checking the display’s 4K/120 support, firmware, HDMI input, cable, and connection path. Connect the console directly to the display while troubleshooting. On PS5, open Settings → Screen and Video → Video Output; Sony’s guidance includes setting Resolution to Auto or 2160p and Video Transfer Rate to Auto. Menu wording can vary with system software. See Sony’s PS5 4K resolution guide.
Xbox Series consoles
Do not assume every Xbox-and-display combination supports the same 120Hz modes. A display may accept 1440p/120 over HDMI 2.0 while refusing 4K/120. Check the display manual for its supported HDMI timings and use the console’s 4K TV details or video-output information to see which capabilities are detected. A game must also offer a 120-fps mode for the console to render it at that rate.

Set 120Hz on a Windows PC
On Windows, the usual refresh-rate path is:
- Right-click the desktop and select Display settings.
- Select the display you want to configure.
- Open Advanced display.
- Choose an available refresh rate, such as 120Hz.
Windows labels and layout may vary by version, and GPU-control software can expose additional settings. If 120Hz is not listed, first confirm that the graphics output and the display’s HDMI input support the selected resolution and refresh rate. A laptop’s built-in panel refresh rate does not establish the capability of its HDMI output.
Which HDMI cable do you need?
Cables are categorized by certified speed, not by a version number that upgrades the equipment. The HDMI organization says Premium High Speed HDMI cables are certified for up to 18 Gbps, including 4K/60 and HDR. Ultra High Speed HDMI cables are intended for systems requiring up to 48 Gbps, including 4K/120. See the official guidance for HDMI cable categories and Ultra High Speed HDMI cables.

- BACKWARDS COMPATIBLE: Works with earlier versions to allow for use with a wide range of HDMI-enabled devices
A suitable Premium High Speed cable is the relevant certified category for an HDMI 2.0 system that needs the full 18-Gbps class of bandwidth. For a 4K/120 HDMI 2.1 system, use a certified Ultra High Speed HDMI cable. Certification describes the cable’s tested capability; it does not prove that the source or display supports a particular mode. An Ultra High Speed cable connected to HDMI 2.0 ports cannot make those ports operate as HDMI 2.1.
What to check if 120Hz is unavailable or unstable
If 120Hz is missing from the available modes
- Check the display manual for 120Hz support on the specific HDMI input, at the chosen resolution.
- Connect the source directly to the display, bypassing a receiver, dock, switch, splitter, capture card, or adapter.
- Try another HDMI input; some displays have different capabilities on different ports.
- Update the graphics driver or console and display firmware.
- Check the display’s on-screen menu for an HDMI enhanced, compatibility, or bandwidth mode.
- Temporarily disable HDR, try 8-bit color, or test a lower resolution to see whether the mode becomes available.
- For a PC monitor, test DisplayPort if it is available and supports the desired mode.
If the image flickers or goes black
- Return to 60Hz so you can restore a stable picture.
- Reconnect the source directly to the display and check another HDMI input.
- Temporarily turn off HDR and VRR, then test 120Hz again.
- Try 8-bit rather than 10-bit color, or a shorter certified cable.
- Update source and display firmware, then retry the target mode.
- If instability persists, use a lower resolution or DisplayPort where supported.
If 120Hz works but the picture is not as expected
Check whether the system has switched from RGB to YCbCr, applied chroma subsampling such as 4:2:2 or 4:2:0, reduced color from 10-bit to 8-bit, disabled HDR or VRR, or changed RGB range. These are device- and mode-specific trade-offs. Chroma reduction can be less noticeable in video or games than on a PC desktop, where small text may look less crisp. A “120Hz” status by itself does not confirm that the signal retains the color format and features you want.
Should you upgrade anything?
Identify the resolution, target refresh rate, source, display input, required HDR/color/VRR features, and any intermediary device before buying equipment. If an existing setup already provides the target mode, there is no need to replace it just because it uses HDMI 2.0.

- 1440p/120: HDMI 2.0 often works, but verify the exact monitor input and desired HDR/VRR/color combination.
- 4K/120: Choose a source and display that explicitly support 4K/120 over HDMI 2.1, and use a certified Ultra High Speed cable.
- PC monitor with high refresh needs: DisplayPort may offer higher refresh rates or more complete feature support, depending on the monitor and GPU.
Do not choose a display based only on its “120Hz” panel claim: the HDMI input may support fewer modes. Likewise, check that receivers, soundbars, switches, docks, or capture devices explicitly pass the target resolution and refresh rate before leaving them in the signal path.
As of August 18, 2026, HDMI 2.2 is the most recent specification listed by HDMI Licensing Administrator, with 96-Gbps bandwidth and newer high-resolution modes. It is not required for the HDMI 2.0 versus 120Hz decision; the relevant published specification details are at HDMI Licensing Administrator’s resolution and bandwidth page.
