Yes. The Google TV Streamer (4K) can serve as the Google Home and Matter hub for compatible smart-home devices, so you do not inherently need a separate Google Home speaker or display. It also includes a Thread border router for Matter-over-Thread devices. Your devices still must be compatible, added to the Google Home app, and connected through a network that meets Matter’s requirements.

What “without a Google Home hub” means

Google uses “hub” to describe the device that coordinates Google Home and Matter connections, while “control” can mean several different things: adding a device, sending commands through Google Home, or using the smart-home panel on the television. The Google TV Streamer (4K) can perform the hub function itself. Google describes this model as a hub for Matter and Google Home and says it has a built-in Thread border router.

That does not mean every product marketed as a smart device will work. A device must support Google Home, Matter, or an integration that Google Home accepts. The device must also be configured in the correct Google Home household. The Streamer supplies the hub capability; it does not remove compatibility, account, network, or protocol requirements.

This answer applies specifically to the Google TV Streamer (4K). Do not assume that an older streaming device has the same Matter and Thread hardware or software.

How the Streamer handles Matter over Wi-Fi and Thread

Matter devices can use different local network transports. The Streamer is listed by Google as a Google Home hub for Matter over Wi-Fi and Matter over Thread. The two paths are not interchangeable, so identifying the device’s transport is the fastest way to understand what you need to enable.

Device connection What the Streamer provides Additional requirement What can go wrong
Matter over Wi-Fi Google Home hub functions for onboarding and control The Streamer, phone, and home network must be configured correctly; IPv6 must be available for Matter Setup may appear complete, but commands or later functions can fail if IPv6 is disabled
Matter over Thread Google Home hub functions plus a built-in Thread border router Thread must be enabled on the Streamer, and the accessory must be a Thread-enabled device The accessory may not join, may disappear, or may lose functions if Thread is disabled

A Thread border router connects the low-power Thread mesh to the rest of your home network. It is not the same thing as a Wi-Fi access point. For a Thread accessory, the Streamer’s border-router function must be active even though the accessory itself does not connect directly to Wi-Fi.

Google’s Matter guidance also calls for IPv6 on the home’s wireless network. IPv6 is not an optional fine-tuning setting for a reliable Matter installation: Google warns that onboarding can seem successful while control and other Matter features fail later when IPv6 is unavailable.

What you need before adding a device

Check these conditions before troubleshooting an individual light, lock, thermostat, or sensor:

  • Google TV Streamer (4K): This is the model documented as both a Matter/Google Home hub and a Thread border router.
  • A compatible accessory: Confirm that the specific model supports Google Home or Matter. “Smart” on the packaging is not a universal compatibility guarantee.
  • The current Google Home app: Use the current version on the phone or tablet used for setup.
  • Current firmware: Update the Streamer and the smart-home accessory before pairing.
  • A matching local network: Google recommends checking that the Streamer and the setup phone are on the same network when setting up or diagnosing a device.
  • IPv6 enabled: Matter requires IPv6 on the home’s wireless network.
  • Thread enabled for Thread accessories: A Thread device needs an active Thread path, not merely a Wi-Fi connection.

These checks separate a missing hub from a setup problem. In many cases, the Streamer is already capable of being the hub and the failure is caused by protocol settings, firmware, or account membership.

Set up a Matter device with the Streamer

For a Matter-over-Wi-Fi device

  1. Install or update the Google Home app on the phone you will use for pairing.
  2. Update the Google TV Streamer (4K) and the accessory’s firmware.
  3. Put the phone and Streamer on the same home network. If the accessory has a network-selection step, use the same household network.
  4. In Google Home, choose the option to add a device and follow the Matter pairing flow for the accessory. Use the Matter setup code supplied with the device when prompted.
  5. Assign the accessory to the intended Google Home and room, then wait for the app to finish commissioning it.
  6. Test a command in Google Home before trying the television’s home panel. This confirms that the device is connected to the home independently of the TV interface.

The exact wording of the add-device controls can change with Google Home app releases, but the important sequence is to commission the accessory into the same Google Home that contains the Streamer. The Streamer does not need a separate Google Home hub for this Wi-Fi Matter path.

For a Matter-over-Thread device

  1. Confirm that the accessory is explicitly Thread-enabled and supports Matter or Google Home.
  2. Open the Streamer’s settings and go to Network & Internet. Make sure Thread is enabled.
  3. Keep the setup phone and Streamer on the same network while pairing, as recommended in Google’s Thread guidance.
  4. Use the current Google Home app to add the accessory and scan or enter its Matter setup code.
  5. Complete room and home assignment, then test the accessory in Google Home.

Disabling Thread prevents the Streamer from acting as the Thread border router. Google warns that devices relying on that path can lose connectivity or some functions. If a Thread accessory worked previously and then became unreachable after a network setting change, check Thread before resetting the accessory.

Control devices from the television

The Streamer’s home panel is a quick-control interface on Google TV. It shows compatible devices that are already connected to your home in the Google Home app; it is not a replacement for adding the device to Google Home first.

Google lists lights, thermostats, locks, cameras, plugs, vacuums, TVs, and speakers as examples of devices that may be available. Availability still depends on the device’s compatibility and the way it was added to the home.

Requirements for the home panel

  • You must be an owner or a member of the relevant Google Home.
  • The Google TV profile must be part of that home.
  • The device must be in standard mode.
  • The home-panel feature must be enabled.
  • There must be at least one other smart-home device in the home.

Open the panel from Quick Settings, or long-press the Home button on the remote. If the panel is empty, first verify that the device appears in Google Home and that the profile and home membership meet the conditions above. A device can be successfully paired yet absent from the panel when one of those display conditions is not met.

Troubleshoot the most common failures

Setup finishes, but control fails afterward

Check IPv6 on the home network. Google’s Matter guidance specifically warns that setup may look successful without IPv6 while control and other functions fail later. Correcting the network’s IPv6 support and then retrying the device is more appropriate than immediately replacing the Streamer.

A Thread accessory will not join

Verify that the accessory is a Thread model, Thread is enabled under the Streamer’s Network & Internet settings, and both the Streamer and phone are using the intended network. Install current firmware on the accessory and Streamer. If Thread was disabled, re-enable it and allow the accessory time to reconnect before removing and re-adding it.

The device works in Google Home but not on the TV

This points to the panel rather than the hub connection. Confirm that the TV profile belongs to the same Google Home, that you are an owner or member, that the device is in standard mode, and that the home panel is enabled. The panel also requires at least one other smart-home device in the home.

The device is labeled “smart” but cannot be added

Check the exact model’s Google Home or Matter support. A proprietary accessory may require its own service or may not be supported by Google Home at all. The Streamer’s hub capability cannot make an incompatible device compatible.

Connectivity was lost after a setting change

For Thread devices, inspect the Thread setting first. Google says that disabling Thread stops the Streamer from acting as a border router and may cause connected devices to lose connectivity or functions. Restore Thread before attempting a factory reset.

When the Streamer is enough—and when it is not

The Google TV Streamer (4K) is sufficient as the central hub when your accessories are compatible with Google Home or Matter, your Matter network has IPv6, and Thread is enabled for Thread-based accessories. In that arrangement, the Streamer handles the hub role and, for Thread, the border-router role.

You still need an appropriate solution if an accessory does not support Google Home or Matter, if your network blocks required Matter traffic, or if the Streamer’s Thread function is disabled. Those are compatibility or network limitations, not evidence that a separate Google Home speaker is inherently required.

Keep the distinction clear: the Streamer is the infrastructure that connects supported accessories to Google Home, while the TV home panel is simply one way to operate devices that have already been configured. A successful setup therefore has three layers: a compatible device, a correctly configured Google Home and network, and the Streamer serving as the hub for the relevant protocol.
