Short answer: Google’s public documentation reviewed for this article does not establish a feature that converts an AI Overview or a Search result directly into a Google Calendar event. The documented “Add to calendar” workflow starts in Gmail, where Gemini can detect event details in an email. Google also automatically adds some flight, hotel and restaurant reservations from Gmail to Calendar. Those are separate Gmail features, not an AI Overview action.

What Google AI Overviews actually do

Google describes AI Overviews as generated answers shown at the top of some Search results. In Google Search’s May 2025 explainer, the company says: “AI Overviews uses generative AI to provide key information about a topic or question, with links to dig deeper and learn more on the web.” The explainer also says more than 1.5 billion people around the world use AI Overviews; that is Google’s own reported figure for 2025, not an independently audited audience measurement.

That description establishes two functions: synthesizing information and linking to source pages. It does not document a control that takes an event found in an Overview and saves it to Calendar. Google’s Search and Calendar material reviewed for this topic likewise does not describe an AI Overview “Add to calendar” button or an automatic Search-result-to-event conversion.

This is a documentation limit, not proof that Google has never tested a limited experiment or that the interface could not change later. Feature availability can vary by account, country, language, device and rollout stage. If a button appears in your account, read its confirmation screen and check the resulting event rather than assuming it is a generally available AI Overview capability.

Why the feature is easy to confuse with Gmail’s Gemini tools

Google documents a genuine event workflow in Gmail. Gemini can recognize event information in an email and present an “Add to calendar” button. Gemini in Gmail can also respond to prompts that create, reschedule or delete events, find open time slots and check availability. Because both products use Google’s generative-AI branding, it is easy to describe the Gmail workflow incorrectly as an AI Overview feature.

The starting location is the decisive distinction:

Workflow Where it starts What Google documents What it is not
AI Overview Google Search results Generated key information with links to web pages for deeper reading Not documented as a direct Calendar-saving action
Gemini in Gmail An email or the Gmail Gemini side panel Detect event details, offer “Add to calendar,” and perform Calendar actions from prompts Not a Search-result conversion
Gmail automatic event handling Gmail inbox Some flight, hotel and restaurant reservation details are added to Calendar automatically Not generated by an AI Overview

How Gmail’s “Add to calendar” button works

On Gmail for the web

Google announced the email-based button on March 10, 2025. At launch, the web experience supported English email content. When Gemini identifies event information in an eligible message, Gmail can show an “Add to calendar” button near the message. Selecting it opens the event-creation flow with details extracted from the email, which you can review before saving.

  1. Open Gmail and select the message containing the event details.
  2. Look for the “Add to calendar” button presented by Gmail. It may not appear for every message.
  3. Review the proposed title, date, time, location and description in the event form.
  4. Correct anything that was misunderstood or omitted, then save the event.
  5. Open Google Calendar and verify the saved event, its time zone and any reminders before relying on it.

The button is a suggested action, not evidence that Search has been converted into Calendar. The source text must be in an email that Gmail and Gemini can process.

On Android and iOS

Google’s August 13, 2025 announcement extended the Gmail event button to Android and iOS. The announcement retained English-only support for email content. In the mobile Gmail app, open the relevant message and use the displayed “Add to calendar” control when it is available; then inspect the proposed event and save it. Labels and placement can change as the mobile app is updated, so use the current wording shown in your account.

Important limits on the Gmail button

  • Already-extracted events: Google says the button does not appear when the event has already been extracted by Gmail, including some restaurant or flight reservations. Those messages may instead use Gmail’s automatic event handling.
  • Guests are not carried over: Events created with this button do not include other guests from the email. Add invitees afterward in Calendar if attendance needs to be coordinated.
  • Language and platform: The 2025 announcements described English email support. Web support was announced first; Android and iOS support followed in August. Availability may change.
  • Account eligibility: Google listed Workspace Business and Enterprise tiers, Gemini Education add-ons and Google One AI Premium among the groups covered by the 2025 announcement. These eligibility rules are subject to change, so consult the current Google Help documentation for your account rather than treating the historical list as a guarantee.

Using Gemini in Gmail to create or manage an event

Separate from the message-level button, Gemini in Gmail can perform Calendar tasks from a prompt. Google Help says it can schedule, reschedule or delete events, find open time slots and check availability. This is a Gmail-based assistant workflow: you ask Gemini to act on Calendar information, rather than asking Search to turn a web page into an event.

A practical prompt-based process

  1. In Gmail, open Gemini or the Gmail side panel where it is available.
  2. Provide the event facts explicitly: title, date, start and end time, time zone, location or meeting link, and any reminder preference.
  3. Ask Gemini to create the event, or ask it to find a suitable open slot first.
  4. Read the proposed details and resolve ambiguities, especially dates such as “next Friday,” daylight-saving changes and conflicting time zones.
  5. Confirm the action, then open Calendar to verify the saved event.

Google’s current Help wording, reviewed October 9, 2026, says Gemini in Gmail can create events only on the primary calendar. If you organize work, family or shared schedules on secondary calendars, move or recreate the event in Calendar after Gemini creates it.

What happens to flights, hotels and restaurant reservations

Google’s Calendar product information separately says that flight, hotel and restaurant reservations found in Gmail can be added to Calendar automatically. This behavior predates and differs from the Gemini message button: Gmail detects certain reservation formats and Calendar reflects them without an AI Overview being involved.

That distinction explains two apparently contradictory experiences. A reservation may already appear in Calendar, so Gmail does not offer an “Add to calendar” button. Conversely, an ordinary invitation or announcement may show the button because Gmail has not already extracted it as a reservation. In either case, the source is your inbox, not a Search result.

How to put information from a Search result on your calendar today

When an AI Overview points to a concert, appointment, class or deadline on a web page, the documented Google workflow does not include a direct save command. The dependable fallback is to open the linked page, confirm the authoritative details, and enter the event through Calendar’s normal event-creation form.

  1. Follow the Overview’s link to the relevant source page instead of relying only on the generated summary.
  2. Confirm the date, start and end times, time zone, location, cancellation policy and any registration requirement on that page.
  3. Open Google Calendar and create a new event using those verified details.
  4. Select the intended calendar, add guests manually if needed, and set reminders.
  5. Save the event and check it in the calendar view, particularly if the source used a local time or a date range.

This manual route is slower than a hypothetical one-click action, but it avoids silently copying an incorrect date or an incomplete AI-generated interpretation.

Troubleshooting when you expect an “Add to calendar” option

No button appears in Gmail

  • Check whether the message is in English; the 2025 announcements described English email support.
  • Look for an existing Calendar entry. Google says the button is suppressed for events already extracted, including some flight and restaurant reservations.
  • Confirm that you are using an account and plan currently eligible for Gemini in Gmail. Historical launch eligibility is not a permanent promise.
  • Try the supported Gmail web or mobile app experience, then update the app if the mobile control is missing.
  • If the message is simply a web link or Search excerpt, remember that the documented button is for Gmail content, not AI Overviews.

The event details are wrong

Do not save an extracted event without checking it. Correct the title, date, time, time zone, location and description in the event form. Reopen the source email or linked page when the wording is ambiguous. For travel and restaurant reservations, compare the proposed event with the confirmation number and the provider’s stated local time.

Guests are missing

This is expected for the Gmail button: Google says other guests are not included automatically. Edit the event in Calendar and add each guest afterward. If the source email contains a distribution list or several people, verify addresses individually before sending invitations.

The event went to the wrong calendar

Gemini in Gmail can create events only on the primary calendar according to Google Help. Move the event after creation, or create it directly on the required secondary calendar using Calendar’s event form.

Timeline and availability to keep straight

Date Documented change Qualification
March 10, 2025 Google announced Gmail’s email-based “Add to calendar” button for the web. English-only email support at launch; caveats for already-extracted events and guests.
May 2025 Google published its AI Overview explainer. Describes generated answers and links, not a Calendar-saving action.
August 13, 2025 Google announced Android and iOS support for Gmail’s event button. English-only email support and the same extraction and guest limitations were retained.
October 9, 2026 Current Google Help wording reviewed for Gemini in Gmail. Gemini can manage events, but creation is limited to the primary calendar.

Google can alter feature names, supported languages, eligible plans and rollout regions. Before documenting a workflow for a team or depending on it for a time-sensitive event, check the current Google Help pages and test the exact account and device that will be used.

A quick decision guide

  • You saw an event on Search: Open the source page and create the Calendar event manually; no direct AI Overview action is established in the reviewed documentation.
  • You received event details by email: Look for Gmail’s “Add to calendar” button, review the extracted fields and save.
  • You received a flight, hotel or restaurant reservation: Check Calendar first because Gmail may have added it automatically.
  • You want Gemini to find a time or manage an event: Use Gemini in Gmail, then verify the result on the primary calendar.
  • You need invitees or a secondary calendar: Add guests and move or recreate the event after Gemini’s initial creation.

Bottom line

Google’s public documentation reviewed here does not show AI Overviews turning Search results directly into Calendar events. The supported, documented paths start in Gmail: Gemini can offer an “Add to calendar” button for event information in an email, perform Calendar actions from a Gmail prompt, and Gmail can automatically place certain reservation details on Calendar. Treat any apparent Search-to-Calendar button as an account-specific change until Google documents it, and always verify the final event before relying on it.
