Yes. FLOPPINUX is a compact, experimental 32-bit x86 Linux distribution designed to fit on a 1.44 MB floppy image and boot to a text terminal. Its 2025 workshop documents a target of an Intel 486DX-class processor, 20 MB of RAM and a 3.5-inch floppy drive. You can test the image in QEMU first, without owning a floppy or vintage computer.
What FLOPPINUX is—and what “fits on a floppy” means
The FLOPPINUX project describes it as “a complete Linux distribution that fits on a single 1.44MB floppy disk.” In practice, the project’s 2025 workshop builds a 1,440 KiB disk image containing a Linux kernel, a compressed root filesystem and boot files. It is a deliberately constrained, text-oriented system—not a graphical desktop distribution.
The project presents FLOPPINUX as Linux From Scratch adapted to a single-floppy limit, with uses including education, embedded experiments and exploring older hardware. Its workshop documents version 0.3.1.

What the documented build contains
The figures below are the FLOPPINUX project’s published build measurements and specifications from its 2025 workshop, not results from an independent performance test.
#1 Best Overall
- 3 1/2 Floppy Disk Reader: As most modern laptops and desktop computers no longer come equipped with internal floppy disk drive for reading floppy diskettes, this 3.5 inch external USB floppy disk drive is an excellent solution to reading and writing your old floppy disks as easy as a built-in floppy disc reader. Retrieve Your Memories, for all the people that grew up with floppy disks, this is a return to the past.
- Plug and Play Floppy Disc Reader: Just insert the floppy disk into the drive, then plug the USB type A/C connector to your computer and it will be automatically detected. Bring up Windows File Explorer, you will see drive A icon under "Devices and Drives", right click it and select open option, you could cut, paste, copy the files inside your floppy disks. Note: Please get power by the USB cable without using USB hub or USB extension cable, Insufficient power supply may cause malfunction
- Ultra thin and Portable USB Floppy Drive: With ultra-slim (Only 0.63inch thick) design and lightweight(Only 0.52Ib), you can easily carry and use this compact USB floppy disk reader to retrieve your wedding photos, childhood photos, favorite poetry, university graduation thesis, novel manuscript and favorite songsinside your floppy disks at anywhere, no matter in the office, at school, at home or during travel. It's a great gift idea for someone who have a lot of memories in the floppy discs.
- Broad Compatibility: This floppy disk reader is compatible with most PCs, laptops, and desktop computers with Windows 11/10/8.1/7/Vista/XP/2000 OS, but not compatible with Mac and Chrome. In Windows 11/10 systems, there has many show/hide options in File Explorer, so after opening "Windows File Explorer," you may not see the drive icon named "Floppy Disk Drive (A:)". Please open "Devices and Printers," right-click on the drive icon named "TEACV0.0" under "Devices," hover the cursor over "Browse Files," and then click on "Floppy Disk Drive (A:)," then you will see the contents of your disks
- Reminder: Not all of your disks can be read, which is due to their age, not the drive. Floppy disks were produced in the 1980s and 1990s and have a history of 30 to 40 years. Due to long storage times, some floppy disks may be corrupted, mouldy or dusty, so some of your floppy disks may not be successfully opened by our floppy disk drive, or the drive may initially be able to open some floppy disks but stop working due to dust on the disks. Therefore, please carefully check the status of the floppy disk before reading to avoid the drive stopping working due to floppy disk issues.
| Component or requirement | Documented value |
|---|---|
| Disk image | 1,440 KiB |
| Kernel image | 881 KiB |
| Compressed root filesystem | 137 KiB |
| Free image space | 253 KiB |
| Minimum memory | 20 MB |
| Persistent file storage | 264 KB |
| Kernel and BusyBox in the workshop build | Linux 6.14.11 and BusyBox 1.36.1 |
The workshop’s kernel and BusyBox versions identify that documented build; they are not claims about the latest upstream releases. LinuxLinks’ February 2026 overview says Linux kernel 6.15 dropped i486 support, which helps explain the relevance of a specifically configured, version-pinned build, but it is a secondary source rather than a FLOPPINUX release note.
What you can do after it boots
FLOPPINUX is intended for command-line use. The project lists vi, file-manipulation commands, simple scripting and persistent storage on the floppy. That makes it suitable for trying a minimal Linux environment or experimenting with basic command-line tasks under severe storage constraints.

- It boots to a text terminal rather than a documented graphical desktop.
- The official project materials reviewed do not document networking, so do not assume network access is available.
- The small toolset and legacy hardware target make it an educational and experimental system, not a general replacement for a current desktop Linux distribution.
Hardware needed for the documented physical setup
The project’s documented minimum is an Intel 486DX at 33 MHz, 20 MB of RAM and an internal floppy drive. For a physical boot, the workshop uses a blank 3.5-inch 1.44 MB floppy disk. The project materials do not establish compatibility with any particular drive model.
You do not need to buy floppy media to explore FLOPPINUX: the workshop first shows booting the image in QEMU. The author, Krzysztof Krystian Jankowski, reports, “After 5 minutes I got freshly burned floppy.” That is the author’s anecdote, not a general estimate of write time; results depend on the hardware and process used.

Try it in QEMU or boot a real floppy
The official workshop walks through configuring a small x86 kernel, enabling floppy and RAM block devices and a compressed initramfs, building the kernel and root filesystem, creating a 1,440 KiB DOS-formatted image and installing SYSLINUX. It then demonstrates the image in QEMU with 20 MB of RAM and a 486 CPU before writing it to physical media.
| Route | What you need | What you get |
|---|---|---|
| QEMU emulation | The image and an emulator; no physical floppy is required. | A way to check the boot in an emulated 486-class environment. |
| Physical hardware | Compatible legacy hardware, a floppy drive and a blank 3.5-inch 1.44 MB disk. | A boot on a real machine rather than an emulated one. |
The workshop gives the exact QEMU invocation and image-writing procedure. Follow its commands carefully, especially when selecting a target device for writing: choosing the wrong device can overwrite data.

Why the project is notable
FLOPPINUX answers a specific engineering question: how much of a usable Linux environment can be assembled within a single floppy’s capacity? The project’s published build leaves 253 KiB free after accounting for its kernel and compressed root filesystem, while also reserving 264 KB for persistent file storage. Its value is less about replacing modern systems than about demonstrating the trade-offs involved in fitting a bootable Linux environment into a tiny, fixed image.
