A Fitbit can monitor pulse signals and, on compatible devices, notify you about patterns that may suggest atrial fibrillation (AFib). That is not the same as diagnosing a heart condition. The FDA-reviewed features described here monitor or flag signals; the available evidence does not establish that wearing a Fitbit itself damages or improves your heart.
Can Fitbit affect your heart?
The evidence described by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) concerns what Fitbit features measure and how their alerts may affect follow-up care—not a direct physical effect from wearing the device. An alert may prompt a conversation with a health professional or further testing. The FDA also notes that false notifications can lead to additional tests or medication. Its post-market evaluation project aims to examine real-world follow-up, testing, treatment, and subsequent diagnoses using patient records from Stanford Health Care and the Veterans Health Administration; the project description is not completed evidence of a rate of benefit or harm. Can Fitbit detect heart problems?
Some compatible Fitbit devices offer heart-related software features, but each has a different purpose. An irregular-rhythm notification looks for pulse patterns suggestive of AFib; the Fitbit ECG App is a separate electrocardiograph software product; and Loss of Pulse Detection is intended to identify possible loss-of-pulse events. None should be treated as a general test that can identify or exclude every heart problem.
| Feature | Signal and how it works | What the FDA record says about use |
|---|---|---|
| Irregular Rhythm Notifications | Photoplethysmography (PPG) sensors detect changes in blood flow and derive pulse-rate data. Software analyzes the data for rhythms suggestive of AFib. | For compatible wrist-worn products. Data are captured while the user is still, and notifications are issued opportunistically when sufficient data are available—not for every episode. Intended to supplement screening decisions, not replace diagnosis or treatment. FDA 510(k) summary, K212372 |
| Fitbit ECG App | A separate electrocardiograph software product; it is not the same feature as passive pulse-rate monitoring. | The FDA database records a substantially equivalent decision dated September 11, 2020. That record does not establish that every Fitbit model has the app or that it is available in every country. FDA database record, K200948 |
| Loss of Pulse Detection | Software for compatible wrist-worn products intended to identify possible loss-of-pulse events. | The February 25, 2025 FDA decision summary says data are captured while the user is still and notifications are opportunistic. If the user does not respond, the system may attempt to prompt a call to emergency services through connected compatible hardware. It is not intended to replace diagnosis or treatment. FDA summary, K242967 |
These are separate functions, and a filing for one does not establish that another is present on a particular device. The reviewed FDA records describe use with compatible products but do not provide a current model-by-model or country-by-country compatibility list.

Can a Fitbit detect AFib?
Irregular Rhythm Notifications analyze wrist-derived pulse data for patterns that may suggest AFib. The FDA filing describes data capture while the wearer is still and notification when enough data are available. The feature does not alert on every possible episode, so it is a screening aid rather than a continuous guarantee that AFib will be caught.
In the clinical summary for the FDA-reviewed feature, the reported positive predictive value (PPV) was 98.2% among 225 subjects who received a positive algorithm detection while wearing an ECG patch. In the described study, participants were screened from Fitbit’s U.S. population; eligible subjects wore both a Fitbit and an ECG patch for seven consecutive days and nights. This result applies to that selected group and protocol. It is not a promise of accuracy for every wearer, and it does not measure how often the feature catches all AFib episodes across all users. Can a Fitbit rule out AFib?
No. The FDA indication says the feature is not intended to notify on every episode, and the absence of a notification is not intended to indicate that no disease process is present. It has not been tested for or intended for people under 22 or people previously diagnosed with AFib. A quiet Fitbit reading cannot establish that you do not have AFib or another heart condition. Is a Fitbit ECG the same as heart-rate monitoring?
No. Heart-rate monitoring estimates pulse rate; the irregular-rhythm feature analyzes PPG-derived pulse data for patterns suggestive of AFib. The Fitbit ECG App is a distinct electrocardiograph software product. Their signal types and intended uses differ, and an FDA record for the ECG App is not evidence that it is available on every Fitbit or in every region. Check the device and country-specific availability information from Fitbit before relying on a feature.

How should you respond to a Fitbit heart notification?
Use an alert as a reason to discuss appropriate evaluation with a health professional, rather than as a diagnosis. False notifications can lead to unnecessary follow-up, while a missed alert cannot rule out a condition. If you have symptoms or concerns, do not wait for a Fitbit notification or use its absence to decide whether to seek care; the FDA materials cited here do not provide a symptom triage protocol.
