No—not reliably from the shape of a fingerprint. Some studies report population-level links between fingerprint patterns and ABO blood groups, but that does not show that a print can identify an individual’s blood type. A separate laboratory technique has tested for blood-group substances in fingerprint residue; it is not pattern-reading and has had limited success. Neither approach is established here as a substitute for clinical blood typing.
Can fingerprints tell your blood type?
Fingerprint-based blood-group claims can refer to two different methods. One compares ridge patterns—such as loops, whorls, and arches—with blood-group frequencies in a group of people. The other looks for blood-group substances deposited in fingerprint residue using laboratory techniques. They answer different questions, and neither should be confused with routine medical blood typing.
A statistical association means that pattern frequencies differed between blood groups in a particular study population. It does not mean a fingerprint pattern uniquely identifies a blood group or predicts it accurately for an individual. Results from one regional sample also cannot automatically be applied to people elsewhere.
What have pattern-based studies found?
Assam study: 1,040 participants
A 2026 cross-sectional study examined 1,040 volunteers aged 18–28 in Assam. Researchers determined blood groups using ABO monoclonal kits and collected fingerprints with an ink pad and roller before analyzing the patterns under optical magnification. They reported an association between fingerprint patterns and blood groups (p = 0.030). The authors caution that “the results should not be interpreted as deterministic or predictive at the individual level” and call for further participant-level analysis. Eastern India study: 800 participants
A 2023 cross-sectional study of 800 healthcare students and workers in eastern India reported a difference in fingerprint-pattern distribution across ABO groups (p = 0.0003). It did not find a statistically significant difference across Rh groups (p = 0.08). The abstract notes that earlier studies had not been consistent. ABO and Rh are separate blood-group systems. An association reported for ABO does not establish one for Rh, and the eastern India study reported no significant pattern difference across Rh groups.

Can AI predict blood type from a fingerprint?
A 2026 Procedia Computer Science abstract reports around 91% accuracy across datasets for models applied to fingerprint data. That is a paper-reported model result, not established clinical accuracy. The accessible abstract does not provide enough information to establish the performance on independent test sets, external validation, class balance, or accuracy for each blood-group class. Without those details, the figure cannot show that a model will reliably predict an individual’s blood group in real-world use. Procedia Computer Science article

What is chemical blood-group testing of fingerprint residue?
Researchers have also tried to detect ABH blood-group substances transferred into a fingerprint. This is a specialized immunohistochemical laboratory method: it tests material in the residue, not the geometry of ridge patterns. Its outcome can depend on the fingerprint donor and the handling and testing conditions.

A 1993 study reported that fixation method and paper quality affected detection, and that serial testing worked better on nitrocellulose than on paper. In a reported double-blind test on paper, the method specifically typed 22 of 35 fingerprints (62.9%). The authors described the approach as applicable to fingerprints from secretors. That limited result does not establish a consumer-ready test or reliable typing for all fingerprints. 1993 study record
A 1987 paper on monoclonal-antibody testing for forensic materials, including fingerprints, reports blind-study performance on more than 700 blood samples. That count refers to blood samples, not fingerprints, and should not be read as a fingerprint-test sample size. 1987 article

For medical decisions, use a recognized blood-typing service or clinical laboratory. A fingerprint pattern, an online classifier, or an ink fingerprint pad is not a substitute. The ink pad and roller in the Assam study were used to collect prints; they do not detect blood group.
