Yes—often. A Cat5e or Cat6 cable can carry an RS-485 signal on one twisted pair and low-voltage DC on another. That makes it a convenient multiconductor cable, but it does not make the link Ethernet or Power over Ethernet (PoE). Standard PoE requires compatible power-sourcing and powered devices; arbitrary DC on a spare pair is a custom wiring arrangement.
Choose the architecture before choosing the cable
“Ethernet cable” describes the cable construction, not the electronics connected to it. These arrangements are different:
RS-485 plus separate DC power
One complete twisted pair carries half-duplex RS-485 A/B, while another pair carries DC positive and negative. The communication remains RS-485, commonly used by Modbus RTU, DMX512, BACnet MS/TP, and proprietary protocols.

Ethernet and standard PoE
A PoE switch or injector supplies a compatible powered device while Ethernet data is present. An RS-485 endpoint needs a PoE splitter or an Ethernet-to-RS-485 gateway; a bare RS-485 device is not automatically PoE-compatible. PoE uses PSE/PD detection and classification rather than simply applying an arbitrary voltage (Analog Devices).

Ethernet with a remote gateway
The cable carries Ethernet and PoE to a gateway. The gateway converts the network connection to a local RS-485 port. In this design, RS-485 is not traveling through the Ethernet cable.
Single-Pair Ethernet
10BASE-T1L and IEEE 802.3cg can combine data and power over one pair, but they are Ethernet technologies, not drop-in replacements for ordinary RS-485 wiring (Analog Devices).
A practical pair assignment
For a custom low-voltage link, reserve complete twisted pairs:

This is an illustrative custom assignment, not an Ethernet standard or universal RJ45 pinout. Manufacturers may label RS-485 as A/B, D+/D−, or +/−; follow the equipment manuals rather than assuming a wire color or RJ45 contact is always “A.” Never split a differential signal across two different twisted pairs.
Is Cat5e or Cat6 suitable?
Often, yes. Twisted pairs help reject common-mode interference, and Ethernet cable can provide the balanced pair RS-485 needs. However, cable category alone does not establish power capacity or RS-485 performance. Cable selection should consider impedance, capacitance, conductor gauge, distance, data rate, and electromagnetic environment (Analog Devices; Belden).

- Cat 6 performance at a Cat5e price but with higher bandwidth
- High Performance Cat6, 30 AWG, RJ45 Ethernet Patch Cable provides universal connectivity for LAN network components such as PCs,computer servers, printers, routers, switch boxes, network media players,NAS,VoIP phones
- Jadaol cat6 standard cable support Cat8 and Cat7 network and provides performance of up to 250 MHz 10Gbps and is suitable for 10BASE-T, 100BASE-TX (Fast Ethernet), 1000BASE-T/1000BASE-TX (Gigabit Ethernet) and 10GBASE-T (10-Gigabit Ethernet)
- UTP(Unshielded Twisted Pair) patch cable with RJ45 gold-plated Connectors and are made of 100% bare copper wire, ensure minimal noise and interference
- The unique flat cable shape allows for a cleaner and safer installation. You can easily and seamlessly make the cable run along walls, follow edges & corners or even make it completely invisible by sliding it under a carpet.
- Conductors: Use solid copper where the installation permits; copper-clad aluminum has higher resistance and is a poor choice for power delivery. Stranded patch cable generally has more resistance than solid horizontal cable.
- Resistance and gauge: Obtain the manufacturer’s DC resistance and conductor size. There is no universal safe amperage for “Cat5e” or “Cat6.”
- Ratings: Verify voltage, temperature, flame, plenum, riser, tray, outdoor, wet-location, UV, and direct-burial ratings for the actual route.
- Shielding: Industrial or high-noise sites may need shielded cable, with the shield bonded according to the system’s grounding plan.
- Bundling: Multiple powered cables raise temperature and can reduce allowable current.
For long, noisy, or industrial runs, purpose-built RS-485 cable is usually a better choice. Belden’s RS-485 range emphasizes 120-ohm impedance, low capacitance, conductor gauge, shielding, and environmental construction (Belden cable family).
Calculate voltage drop before applying power
Power delivery is usually the limiting factor. For a two-conductor DC circuit:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Voltage drop = I × Rloop Vremote = Vsupply − (I × Rloop) Power lost = I² × Rloop
Rloop is the resistance of both outgoing and return conductors for the complete run, including relevant contacts. For example, with a 24 V source, a 0.20 A load, and an illustrative 10-ohm loop resistance:
Voltage drop = 0.20 A × 10 Ω = 2 V Remote voltage = 24 V − 2 V = 22 V
This example is not a property of any particular cable. Check the device’s minimum operating voltage at its worst-case current, temperature, supply tolerance, and cable length. A cable can be perfectly adequate for RS-485 signaling while delivering too little voltage to the remote load.
RS-485 wiring rules that still apply
Use a bus, not a star
Build a linear multidrop bus. Keep device stubs short; long branches create reflections and waveform distortion.

Terminate only the physical ends
Termination commonly matches a 120-ohm cable, but the resistor should match the actual cable impedance. Place it at the two physical ends of the bus, not at every node. Analog Devices explains the effects of impedance mismatch and long stubs (RS-485 guidance).
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Provide biasing and a reference where the design requires it
Fail-safe biasing prevents an undefined receiver state when no driver is active. RS-485 is differential, but transceivers still have common-mode voltage limits. A signal-reference conductor can help when endpoints have different ground potentials; isolated interfaces may be preferable for long outdoor runs or substantial ground differences. Signal common, cable shield, chassis, and protective earth are different functions and should not be tied together casually.
Keep polarity consistent
Verify A/B (or D+/D−) at both devices. A/B naming is not consistent across manufacturers, so use the manuals and test procedure supplied with the equipment.
Power protection and connector safety
Install a fuse or resettable current limiter close to the DC source. Confirm polarity, inspect terminations, and check continuity and insulation before energizing the remote end. Suppress transients from inductive loads and consider surge protection on outdoor or exposed routes.
RJ45 is a connector shape, not a signal standard. A custom RJ45 cable may carry RS-485 and DC, while another carries Ethernet or PoE. Plugging the custom cable into a switch, router, laptop, or PoE port can expose power to Ethernet magnetics, cause a short, trigger a PoE fault, or damage equipment. Prefer terminal blocks or keyed industrial connectors. If RJ45 is unavoidable, document the custom pinout, label both ends, use mechanical keying or segregation, and mark the cable non-Ethernet.

Great for router-to-PC connections, modem-to-TV setups, gaming consoles, workstations, printers and other home network equipment that needs a longer Ethernet cable.
When standard PoE is the better solution
Use standard PoE when Ethernet data is also needed, centralized power management is valuable, or accidental connection protection matters. Typical system-level limits are:
| PoE type | Maximum PSE power | Power available at PD | Approximate PSE voltage |
|---|---|---|---|
| IEEE 802.3af (Type 1) | 15.4 W | 12.95 W | 44–57 V |
| IEEE 802.3at (Type 2) | 30 W | 25.5 W | 50–57 V |
| IEEE 802.3bt (Type 3) | 60 W | 51 W | 50–57 V |
| IEEE 802.3bt (Type 4) | 100 W | 71 W | 52–57 V |
These are cited system limits, not a guarantee at every endpoint; cable loss, temperature, distance, and converter efficiency still apply (Texas Instruments). A typical arrangement is:
PoE switch or injector → Ethernet cable → PoE splitter or Ethernet-to-RS-485 gateway → RS-485 device
Do not treat passive power injection as interchangeable with IEEE PoE. Passive systems may apply voltage continuously and lack detection and classification safeguards (TI passive-PoE caution).
Commissioning checklist
- Confirm the remote voltage, operating range, current, and inrush requirement.
- Select cable from its datasheet, including conductor resistance and installation rating.
- Calculate worst-case loop voltage drop and heating.
- Reserve one intact twisted pair for RS-485 and verify A/B polarity.
- Reserve another pair for DC and install source-side overcurrent protection.
- Check continuity, polarity, insulation, and connector ratings before power-up.
- Measure voltage at the remote device while the load is operating.
- Install termination only at the two bus ends; keep stubs short.
- Test at the intended baud rate and with the attached load switching on and off.
- Label custom wiring so it cannot be mistaken for Ethernet or PoE.
Worked design choices
| Requirement | Recommended approach |
|---|---|
| Low-current, short indoor sensor run | Solid-copper Cat5e/Cat6, one pair for RS-485 and one for regulated DC, with fuse and documented connectors. |
| 24 V industrial sensor over a long or noisy route | Shielded, purpose-built RS-485 cable plus appropriately sized power conductors; consider isolation and surge protection. |
| Ethernet data is required | Standards-compliant PoE and an Ethernet-to-RS-485 gateway or compatible splitter. |
| High power or strict electrical ratings | Separate power cable or an engineered PoE system; do not infer capacity from cable category. |
| Outdoor or lightning-prone site | Installation-rated cable, isolated interfaces, surge protection, and a defined grounding architecture. |
| Technician safety and interchangeability | Avoid custom RJ45; use keyed or terminal connectors and clear labels. |
Troubleshooting by symptom
Powers up, but data is unreliable
- Check A/B polarity, termination placement, star wiring, and stub length.
- Confirm the conductors are one twisted pair and inspect shielding and reference connections.
- Look for switching-regulator noise and common-mode voltage outside the transceiver range.
Resets when the load starts
- Measure remote voltage during the event.
- Check loop resistance, connector contact quality, source current limiting, inrush current, and cable heating.
Works briefly or only at a low baud rate
- Reduce data rate or cable length while checking capacitance, impedance, termination, EMI, and patch-cable quality.
- Distance and data rate are interdependent; published figures such as about 1,000 m or 4,000 ft at low rates are guidelines, not universal guarantees (Belden).
Ethernet switch reports a fault
Disconnect the custom cable immediately. It may have been plugged into standard Ethernet or PoE equipment. Verify the pinout before reconnecting anything.

Bottom-line decision
Use Ethernet cable as a convenient cable bundle for low-current RS-485 and DC only when the cable ratings, voltage drop, topology, protection, and connector scheme have been engineered for that purpose. For industrial or long runs, dedicated RS-485 cable and separately sized power wiring provide more margin. If Ethernet data is part of the requirement, use standards-compliant PoE with a proper splitter or RS-485 gateway—not an improvised passive pinout.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use any Cat5e cable for RS-485 power wiring?
No. Check solid-copper construction, conductor resistance, voltage and temperature ratings, installation rating, bundling conditions, and the load’s voltage-drop requirement. Cable category alone does not specify a universal DC current limit.
Can a custom RS-485-and-power RJ45 cable plug into a PoE switch?
No. Unless the complete system is designed to the relevant Ethernet and PoE standards, a custom pinout can cause faults or damage. Use keyed, segregated connectors or a documented PoE splitter/gateway.
Does RS-485 always need a ground wire?
Not always. The need for a signal reference depends on transceiver common-mode limits, isolation, ground-potential differences, surge exposure, and the manufacturer’s wiring guidance.
