Engineered cyanobacteria can use photosynthesis to turn carbon dioxide into molecules with fuel potential, but they have not been shown to produce commercially available petrol. Laboratory studies have demonstrated products including isobutanol, fatty-acid precursors and propane. Those are different substances with different uses: isobutanol is a liquid alcohol that may substitute for gasoline, fatty acids need further processing, and propane is a gas—not liquid petrol.
How cyanobacteria turn CO₂ into fuel-related molecules
Cyanobacteria are photosynthetic bacteria. They use light energy to fix carbon dioxide into organic compounds. Genetic engineering can redirect some of that carbon toward reduced molecules that could serve as fuels or fuel precursors, rather than directing it only toward cell growth. Researchers have demonstrated pathways to several kinds of products, especially short- and medium-chain alcohols, as well as fatty-acid precursors and hydrocarbons. A review by Savakis and Hellingwerf describes these efforts as proof of principle.
What fuel-related products have researchers made?
| Product | What it is | What the cited work demonstrated |
|---|---|---|
| Isobutanol | A liquid alcohol that can be used as a gasoline substitute; it is not finished petrol. | A 2009 study engineered Synechococcus elongatus PCC 7942 to produce isobutyraldehyde and isobutanol directly from CO₂. The researchers increased production by overexpressing Rubisco, and the engineered strain remained active for 8 days. Read the study. |
| Free fatty acids | Fuel precursors that require further processing, rather than finished fuel. | A 2013 account from Sandia National Laboratories described engineered cyanobacteria excreting free fatty acids. It characterized the work as proof of concept and reported low yields and biological costs. Read the Sandia account. |
| Propane | A gaseous fuel, not liquid petrol. | A 2022 study reported small quantities of propane in closed-culture experiments using engineered Synechocystis sp. PCC 6803, and noted that further optimization was possible. Read the study. |
Why “petrol substitute” needs qualification
“Fuel” covers chemically distinct substances. Isobutanol is the example in the cited studies most directly described as a gasoline substitute, but making it is not the same as making finished petrol. Fatty acids are precursors that need additional processing. Propane is a volatile gas with different storage and use requirements from liquid petrol. The phrase “petrol substitute” therefore describes possible fuel uses, not a single product or a ready-to-use replacement for petrol in ordinary vehicles.

Cells can pay a biological cost
In Sandia National Laboratories’ 2013 account of work by Anne Ruffing, engineered strains that excreted fatty acids had reduced photosynthetic yields, slower growth and cell death. The article said yields at the time were too low for large-scale production. These effects show why increasing the amount of a target compound is not simply a matter of adding a pathway: production can undermine the organism’s ability to grow and keep producing.

- POWER WHEN YOU NEED IT: Delivers quicker more reliable starts, designed to keep your outdoor power equipment running at peak performance while extending engine life
Laboratory demonstrations are not commercial production
The 2022 propane result was a small-quantity demonstration in closed culture, with further optimization still needed. The 2009 isobutanol study’s 8-day activity period describes that engineered strain in that study; it is not a general measure of how long cyanobacteria can produce fuel. The cited work does not provide a reliable current, cross-industry figure for cost, commercial yield or market share.
What the DIRECTFUEL project did—and did not—establish
The EU-funded DIRECTFUEL project ran from 1 October 2010 to 30 September 2014. It investigated direct photosynthetic production of ethylene and short-chain alkanes, including ethane and propane, initially using Synechocystis sp. PCC 6803. Its goal was to develop engine-ready fuels without destructive biomass extraction and additional chemical conversion; that was a project objective, not evidence the fuels became commercially available. The European Commission’s CORDIS project page records the project scope, while its final report says the work advanced fundamental research but did not produce patents or applicable production platforms. That report describes this project’s outcome, not every research or commercial effort since.

Is cyanobacteria-derived petrol available now?
The cited evidence establishes laboratory proof of concept, not a commercially available, large-scale petrol replacement. It also does not establish that the technology is cost-competitive, carbon-negative or ready for ordinary vehicles. Demonstrating a fuel-related molecule is only one step: a practical replacement would also need sustained production, a workable route from the organism’s output to usable fuel, and evidence on economics and lifecycle emissions.
