Yes—on supported phones, employers can use mobile device management (MDM) and carrier provisioning to install, restrict, or sometimes change an eSIM. What IT can do depends on the phone and operating system, the carrier, the MDM service, and whether the device is company-owned or personally owned and how it is enrolled. A personal phone does not automatically give an employer the same control as a company-managed device.

What “manage an eSIM” can mean

An eSIM is a digital cellular profile provisioned through a carrier. Management is not one universal control: it can refer to installing a profile, preventing a user from adding or removing profiles, or changing the carrier. These actions require compatible device, carrier, and management support.

Apple documents MDM-triggered eSIM installation, a restriction that can prevent users from adding or removing eSIMs, and a management command for changing carriers on supported configurations. Carrier activation support is part of the workflow; Apple’s guidance is available in its eSIM deployment documentation.

Android Enterprise also supports eSIM provisioning and removal on managed devices, but user control differs by ownership and enrollment. Google says that on personally owned Android devices, the user is responsible for activating the eSIM and can delete it. Android’s device policy help describes this BYOD boundary.

How ownership and enrollment affect control

Company-owned phones

An organization can generally apply broader device-level controls when a phone is company-owned and enrolled in a management mode that supports them. This still does not guarantee that every eSIM action is available: the specific model, operating system, carrier, and MDM features must all support the intended action. Android Enterprise describes company-owned, personally enabled corporate-owned, and BYOD deployment approaches in its management overview.

Personally owned phones

BYOD management is more bounded. On Android, Google says the employee activates the eSIM and can delete it. A work profile separates work apps and data from personal use, but it does not turn a personal phone into a company-owned device.

For Apple BYOD, User Enrollment is designed to preserve user autonomy while separating enterprise data in a cryptographically protected volume. The organization’s configured controls and supported features still matter. See Apple’s User Enrollment documentation.

Check compatibility before promising remote control

“Our MDM supports eSIMs” is not enough to establish that a particular employee phone can be provisioned or controlled. For example, Microsoft Intune documents eSIM plan actions for supported Apple and Android Enterprise devices, but excludes personally owned Android devices with a work profile from this feature. Intune also requires carrier activation information. Check the Intune eSIM plan documentation against the exact enrollment type and device.

Employer rollout checklist

  1. Confirm device and OS support. Identify the exact phone models and operating system versions, then verify they support the eSIM actions the organization needs.
  2. Confirm carrier provisioning. Ask the carrier to verify the activation route and provide required information, such as SM-DP+ server details where applicable. Apple’s deployment guidance explains carrier activation considerations.
  3. Match the MDM feature to enrollment. Verify whether the MDM can install, remove, restrict, or change profiles for the chosen device and ownership mode. Do not assume a feature documented for company-owned phones also applies to BYOD.
  4. Set user and recovery expectations. Decide whether users may add, remove, activate, or switch profiles, and document what happens when a phone is erased, replaced, or moved to another carrier.
  5. Plan activation volume and timing. Apple notes that some carriers ask organizations to coordinate large automated provisioning events. Confirm capacity and scheduling with the carrier before rollout.
  6. Explain BYOD boundaries. Employee notices and policies should state which work data the organization manages and which personal-device controls remain with the employee. Technical platform documentation does not resolve local employment or privacy-law requirements.

What employees should expect

If the phone is company-owned and fully managed, IT may have device-level eSIM controls when the platform, carrier, and MDM support them. If it is a personal Android phone with a work profile, Google’s stated model leaves eSIM activation and deletion with the user. On an Apple personal device enrolled with User Enrollment, work data is separated from personal use, while the available controls depend on the organization’s configuration.

These are technical capabilities, not a determination of what an employer may legally require or monitor. Rules depend on location and workplace policy; platform documentation alone does not answer that legal question.

Sources and scope

Apple, Google, and Microsoft platform documentation describes capabilities for supported configurations, not a universal guarantee for every phone, carrier, or MDM. Features and availability can change; confirm the current device, OS, enrollment, carrier, and service details before deployment.
