A master’s thesis completed at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) explores whether patterns in Counter-Strike 2 match demos can recognize the same player on different accounts. The researcher says the method found unreported smurf accounts, but the available reporting does not establish its accuracy or show that Valve has adopted it. It is a reported proof of concept for linking accounts—not a proven way to identify cheaters or impose permanent bans.

What the thesis is trying to identify

The idea is to recognize a recurring player, even when that player switches accounts. That is different from detecting cheating: an identity match could connect a new account to a previously banned player, but it would not by itself show that the player cheated.

The researcher describes using CS2 match demos, which the game already records, to examine keyboard and mouse habits. Examples named in the researcher’s summary include flicks, counter-strafes, spray control, and utility use. The proposed behavioral profile is called a “CS-fingerprint.” The available descriptions do not spell out the complete feature extraction or model architecture. The researcher’s post says: “No new measurements are made, since the method only uses data Counter-Strike has recorded for years, just for a new purpose.”

What results have been reported—and what remains unknown

The researcher reports that the method found smurf accounts that had not been reported. That is a claim from the person who developed the work, not an independently verified performance result. The contemporaneous Dexerto report says the method was not tested at the scale of CS2’s full player base.

The sources available for this account do not provide sample size, accuracy, false-positive rates, or independent validation. Without those details, it is not possible to judge how reliably the method distinguishes one player from another, or how often it might link the wrong people. The report should therefore be understood as an exploratory proposal and reported proof of concept, not evidence that the technique is ready for live enforcement.

How account linkage could fit into anti-cheat review

The researcher suggests that a match between a banned player’s fingerprint and a new account could prompt closer scrutiny or contribute evidence to a case. That would be an account-linking signal: it might indicate that two accounts are used by the same person. A separate investigation would still need to establish misconduct before any cheating-related penalty could be justified.

This differs from the mechanisms Valve describes for VAC and Trusted Mode. Steam Support’s VAC explanation describes checks for third-party software that gives a player an advantage, while its Trusted Mode explanation describes reducing accidental software injection. Those are software- and game-integrity signals, not behavioral identification across accounts. The sources do not show that Valve has adopted or tested the thesis proposal, and they provide no head-to-head benchmark between the approaches.

Why a behavioral fingerprint could be misleading

Shared accounts are an obvious complication: if several people play on one account, their different input habits may appear under the same account history. More broadly, a mistaken account link could wrongly associate a player with someone else’s past activity. The reported material does not quantify how often these problems occur or describe a validated process for resolving them.

For that reason, even a reliable match would need to be treated as supporting evidence or a reason to review an account—not as an automatic cheating verdict. Any enforcement system would need to establish its error rates and provide a fair way to assess cases before relying on the signal for penalties.

What the thesis does not establish

  • It does not show that CS2 can identify cheaters solely from movement or aim patterns; the proposal is about recognizing players across demos.
  • It does not establish independently verified accuracy, false-positive rates, or performance at full-player-base scale.
  • It does not establish that Valve has incorporated the method into VAC, Trusted Mode, or another live system.
  • It does not show that a same-player match is proof of cheating or grounds for an automatic ban.
