Yes, specialized code scanners can detect patterns associated with AI-generated code in evaluated datasets, but their results are not proof of who wrote a particular file. A score is best treated as a screening signal: its meaning depends on the programming language, task, generator, human editing, and evaluation method behind it. It cannot by itself establish that a student or developer used an AI assistant.

What a code scanner can—and cannot—identify

Code-specific detection is a real research problem, and researchers have built methods for it. These methods look for statistical or structural patterns that distinguish generated code from examples in a comparison dataset. That is different from simply applying a detector designed for prose to source code.

The important distinction is between classification and provenance. A scanner may label a sample as more likely to resemble its AI-generated examples, or return a score or ranking. It does not retain a reliable record of who typed, generated, reviewed, or changed each line. A matching pattern does not identify an author, show which tool was used, or prove that an individual violated a rule.

This also means “AI-written” is not always a clean yes-or-no category. A person may generate a first draft and substantially revise it, use an assistant for one function, or write code that happens to resemble common examples. Fully generated, human-written, and human-AI co-authored code are distinct cases, and a detector’s output may not distinguish them reliably.

How AI code detection works

Detectors learn or measure features that separated human and generated samples in an evaluation set. The precise features vary by method. One example is the approach described by Zhenyu Xu and Victor S. Sheng in their 2024 AAAI paper, “Detecting AI-Generated Code Assignments Using Perplexity of Large Language Models”.

Perplexity and targeted masking

Perplexity is a measure related to how predictable a sequence is to a language model. Xu and Sheng start from the observation that AI-generated code may have lower perplexity under a language model. Their method targets code regions with higher perplexity for masking, uses a fine-tuned CodeBERT model to fill the masked portions, and combines overall perplexity with line-level perplexity variation and burstiness to produce a score. In their account, a higher rank for the original code suggests AI generation.

This is one research method, not a description of every scanner. Other systems may use different learned patterns, data, or decision rules. In all cases, the output reflects a comparison with what the system measured or learned; it is not a forensic log of the code’s creation.

What published results actually show

Research demonstrates that some detectors can separate generated and human examples under specified experimental conditions. The results do not translate directly into a universal accuracy rate for a real-world file.

Study What was evaluated Reported result or scale What the figure means
Xu and Sheng, AAAI 2024 Code assignment submissions generated by OpenAI text-davinci-003 Average AUC of 0.87; GPTZero baseline AUC of 0.56 AUC measures ranking separation over evaluated examples and thresholds. It is not an 87% accuracy rate or the probability that a particular submission was AI-written.
Orel et al., EMNLP 2025 Droid DroidCollection: more than one million samples across seven programming languages, outputs from 43 coding models, and three real-world coding domains Dataset scale and coverage; the paper reports generalization failures beyond narrow training data These counts describe the research suite, not a detector’s accuracy or market share.
Orel et al., Findings of ACL 2025 CoDet-M4 Evaluation across multiple languages, generators, domains, and authorship settings Out-of-domain assessment, including unseen models, domains, and languages The framework broadens what is tested; it does not certify universal performance in every deployment.

The 0.87 AUC reported by Xu and Sheng is meaningful only with its experimental context: the authors evaluated code submissions generated by text-davinci-003 and compared their method with a GPTZero baseline. AUC is a threshold-independent way to summarize how well a method ranks positive examples above negative ones across the test set. It does not state how many individual classifications were correct at a particular operating threshold. Nor does it answer how the system would perform on a different language, model, assignment, repository, or mixture of human and AI work.

Likewise, the DroidCollection scale—over one million samples, seven languages, 43 coding models, and three real-world coding domains—is evidence about the breadth of the dataset, not proof that a deployed scanner has been tested on all those combinations or performs equally well on each. The CoDet-M4 work is useful because it frames evaluation around out-of-domain settings, but broad evaluation design is not a guarantee for every tool or use case.

Why a detector may fail on your code

Different programming languages and domains

A detector trained or calibrated on one language or coding task may not transfer to another. An introductory assignment, a code repository, and code from a real-world application differ in conventions, structure, and the kinds of examples a model may have seen. The EMNLP 2025 Droid paper reports that existing detectors can fail to generalize across coding domains and programming languages beyond narrow training data.

New or unseen code generators

Performance can change when the generator differs from the models represented in a detector’s training or evaluation data. A result on outputs from one model does not establish performance on another, newer model or on code produced through a different workflow. That is why evaluation against models held out from training is more informative about generalization than a test limited to familiar generators.

Human editing and mixed authorship

Generated code may be revised, refactored, or combined with human-written code. Conversely, a human may write code that follows common idioms or resembles examples in a training set. These cases make it difficult to turn a score into a reliable statement about the amount or nature of AI assistance.

The Droid work includes fully generated, human-AI co-authored, and explicitly adversarial examples. It also reports that superficial prompting to humanize outputs can compromise most detectors studied. This is a warning about detector robustness, not a recommendation for evasion: small changes to text or code can change the patterns a detector sees without establishing who created the underlying work.

Thresholds and the meaning of a score

A scanner’s label depends on how its score is interpreted and where a threshold is set. Moving a threshold can change which samples are flagged. A reported AUC does not reveal how a tool’s chosen threshold behaves in a particular setting, and an output score should not be read as a calibrated probability unless the tool’s evidence establishes that interpretation for the relevant population and task.

Can AI detectors detect ChatGPT code?

They may flag some code generated by a particular model under conditions similar to those used in their evaluation. The AAAI 2024 result, for example, concerns text-davinci-003 outputs in the authors’ code-assignment experiment; it does not establish how any current scanner will classify code from every ChatGPT model, prompt, programming language, or editing workflow.

To assess a claim about a named generator, ask whether the detector was tested on that generator and whether the test includes the same kind of code you are evaluating. A result on isolated assignment solutions is not automatically transferable to a developer’s repository or a student’s mixed human-AI submission.

How to evaluate a detector’s claims

Before relying on a scanner, check what its evidence actually covers. These questions apply whether you are reviewing a product claim, a research paper, or an institutional tool:

  • Language: Was the relevant programming language represented in both training and evaluation?
  • Domain and task: Are the tested samples comparable to the code at issue—such as coursework, repository code, or production work?
  • Generator coverage: Were multiple generators evaluated, including models held out from training?
  • Authorship mix: Does the evaluation include fully human, fully generated, AI-assisted, and edited or refactored examples?
  • Robustness: Were humanized or adversarial examples tested, and how did performance change?
  • Metric and threshold: Is the reported measure AUC, accuracy, F1, or something else? What operating threshold is used, and what are the consequences of false positives and false negatives at that threshold?
  • Decision being made: Is the tool intended to screen for further review, or is someone treating its score as proof of authorship or misconduct?

These checks reflect the limits documented in the Droid and CoDet-M4 studies: generalization across languages and domains, hybrid authorship, unseen generators, and robustness all matter. A test that covers only samples similar to a detector’s training data answers a narrower question than a real-world accusation requires.

How to interpret a flag fairly

Use a flag as a reason to examine context, not as a conclusion. If a school or workplace is reviewing a code sample, the detector should be one signal among the evidence available, and its limits should be explained to the person affected.

  1. Identify what was scanned. Confirm the exact file or submission, the language, and whether the tool analyzed a complete project or selected snippets. A result on a fragment should not automatically be generalized to an entire codebase.
  2. Check the tool’s applicable evidence. Look for evaluation on the same language, task, generator, and authorship mix. If those conditions are missing, treat the output as less informative rather than assuming it transfers.
  3. Consider ordinary explanations. Shared libraries, common programming idioms, starter code, templates, copied examples, and collaborative work can affect similarity or style. A flag alone does not distinguish these from AI generation.
  4. Ask for relevant context. A student or developer may be able to explain design choices, describe their process, or show drafts and development history. A conversation can add context, but fluency in explaining code is not by itself proof either way.
  5. Seek independent corroboration where appropriate. Version history or other development artifacts may help establish how work evolved, if they are available and relevant. Do not treat any single artifact as conclusive without considering its context.
  6. Separate policy questions from authorship claims. Whether assistance was permitted, disclosed, or properly cited is a policy question. A detector score does not answer it; the applicable assignment or workplace rules and other evidence do.

This is cautious review guidance, not a validated forensic standard. The cited studies evaluate detectors on datasets; they do not establish a universal procedure for determining authorship in a real dispute.

What the cited studies do not establish

Xu and Sheng’s 2024 paper states in its abstract that “there are currently no robust detectors designed specifically to identify AI-generated code.” That sentence describes the research landscape characterized in their paper, published March 24, 2024; it should not be mistaken for an independently verified inventory of all tools available in 2026.

The cited peer-reviewed work from 2024 and 2025 supports conclusions about methods, benchmark design, and generalization challenges. It does not verify current commercial scanner pricing, vendor terms, present-day performance for every product, or a universal forensic standard. Product claims should therefore be judged against transparent, relevant evaluations rather than inferred from a research benchmark alone.
