In a reported experiment, ultrasound stretched a polymer containing a triazole ring, with the proposed result that the ring would split back into azide and alkyne groups. That is what “unclicking” click chemistry means here—not a general undo button for click reactions. The claim also needs a qualification: in 2014, Chemical & Engineering News reported that Science had issued an expression of concern over data reliability in the study. The authors reportedly said repeat experiments left their conclusions unchanged; that is not the same as independent replication.
What “unclicking” click chemistry means
Click chemistry is a name for reactions that efficiently join molecular building blocks. In the reported case, researchers put a 1,2,3-triazole—a ring formed by a click reaction—into a poly(methyl acrylate) chain. The polymer served as a mechanical handle: ultrasound-driven stretching was proposed to pull the triazole apart and regenerate azide and alkyne functionality.
“Unclicking” is therefore shorthand for a proposed force-induced cycloreversion, or reversal of ring formation. It does not mean that ultrasound reverses every click reaction, nor that the original reaction can be undone simply by applying sound to a solution. The 2011 account described the idea as a possible mechanically labile protecting-group strategy, not as an established practical application. Chemistry World’s report on the 2011 work describes the polymer setup and the proposed application.

Why the original claim needs qualification
In 2014, Chemical & Engineering News reported that Science had published an editorial expression of concern after a reader query led to a re-examination of the data. According to C&EN, then-editor-in-chief Marcia McNutt said the authors deemed data in over 50% of figure parts unreliable because of uncertainty about data origin or processing. That figure describes the authors’ assessment of data reliability; it does not mean that over half of the paper’s conclusions were shown to be false.

C&EN also reported that Christopher W. Bielawski said experiments had been repeated and the conclusions were unchanged. That is the authors’ reported response, not evidence of independent replication. The available account establishes an expression of concern, but not the study’s final formal disposition or whether a later correction was issued. It would therefore be inaccurate to present the original result as settled fact—or to call the paper retracted on this evidence. C&EN’s 2014 report recounts the concern and the responses.
Why the triazole’s structure matters
A 2017 theoretical analysis shows why “triazole” is not enough to predict whether reversal will occur. The researchers examined different triazole regioisomers—the arrangements of substituents around the ring—and found that the proposed route depends on that molecular structure and on the reaction conditions.

The 1,4-disubstituted isomer
For the 1,4-disubstituted triazole, the analysis found direct retro-click cycloreversion disfavored, even with Cu(I). More favorable activation free-energy routes led to destructive pathways instead. In other words, the modeled ring was not expected simply to open cleanly and restore its precursors under those conditions.

The 1,5-disubstituted isomer
The analysis contrasted that result with a 1,5-disubstituted triazole, which it predicted could cyclorevert under mechanochemical force with Ru(II) catalysis. This is a theoretical mechanistic result for modeled conditions, not a universal recipe or proof that any triazole-containing polymer will reverse under ultrasound. The 2017 study’s abstract describes the regioisomer and catalyst distinction.

How this differs from other ways to break polymer links
Ultrasound-triggered triazole cycloreversion is one proposed strategy among several for making materials degradable or responsive. Reviews discuss alternatives that break different linkages using chemical reduction, heat, or light. These are not other forms of “unclicking” the same triazole, and the available sources do not provide a head-to-head performance comparison.
- Mechanical force and ultrasound: the proposed triazole approach applies force through a polymer chain; its outcome depends on the molecular structure, and the original claim carries the data concern described above.
- Chemical reduction: reductive retro-Michael cleavage targets a different linkage and requires a chemical trigger.
- Heat: retro-Diels–Alder strategies use a different bond-forming reaction and thermal triggering.
- Light: photocleavable linkers are designed to break under illumination rather than mechanical stretching.
A hydrogel review recounts the ultrasound-induced triazole report and discusses mechanically degradable hydrogels alongside these other strategies. Those are materials concepts, not evidence that a particular approach is suitable for biological use or a finished product. The hydrogel review surveys these distinct degradation mechanisms.

What the evidence does—and does not—support
The useful conclusion is narrow: a particular polymer-tethered triazole was reported to undergo force-associated reversal, but the report’s reliability was questioned, and later theoretical work indicates that clean reversal depends on regioisomer and catalytic conditions. A reaction being called “click” does not itself guarantee that it can be reversed; even the ideal click criteria are goals rather than properties met perfectly by every reaction. A 2021 review discusses that broader terminology and its limits, but it concerns oxidation-induced click chemistry, not direct evidence for ultrasound-driven reversal. The review’s abstract addresses the broader click-chemistry framework.

The evidence summarized here does not establish the final formal status of the original paper or the current independent replication record.
