Possibly, but page count alone cannot tell you whether it will fit. Anthropic estimates that a PDF page may contain about 1,500–3,000 text tokens depending on its density. Applied as a rough estimate, 300 pages could mean 450,000–900,000 tokens of source text—before instructions, conversation history, or the translation itself. Check the limits for the Claude model and product you plan to use, then translate in sections if the full request is too large.
Why 300 pages is not a reliable token estimate
Pages vary. A sparse novel page and a dense page of tables, footnotes, or technical material do not contain the same amount of text. Images and PDF layout can also affect processing. Anthropic’s guidance estimates 1,500–3,000 text tokens per PDF page depending on content density; this is a screening estimate, not a measurement of your particular book. At that rate, 300 pages would be roughly 450,000–900,000 source-text tokens. Anthropic’s PDF support documentation explains PDF processing and recommends splitting large PDFs.
Input and translation output share capacity
A source document that fits the context window does not necessarily leave enough room for a complete translation in the same request. The model must also accommodate the prompt, glossary, conversation history, and other supplied material, while the generated translation consumes output capacity. A full-book, one-shot translation can therefore fail or be cut short even when the source appears to fit.

Context-window and output limits depend on the selected model and can change. Check Anthropic’s current context-window documentation for the model you are actually using rather than assuming that one stated limit applies to every Claude model or interface.

Claude chat and the API have different limits to check
Start by identifying whether you mean Claude chat or the Anthropic API. The API documentation describes request-level model context, PDF constraints, token counting, and caching. Consumer Claude guidance covers product usage limits, model-dependent context, Projects retrieval, and automatic context management in supported situations. These are not interchangeable limits: check the documentation for your specific surface and model.
For API requests, Anthropic’s current PDF documentation lists a 32 MB request-size limit and up to 600 PDF pages for a request using a 1M-token context window, or 100 pages for models with a context window under 1M. Those are request and page caps, not a promise that every page will fit in context. The request limit covers the whole request, and a dense PDF can reach the context limit before reaching its page cap. Platform details may vary. Consult the PDF limits alongside the selected model’s context and output limits.

For Claude chat, see Anthropic’s help article on usage and length limits. Do not assume an API PDF page cap or API context figure automatically describes what a chat upload can handle.
Estimate the actual request before translating
- Choose the Claude surface and model. Decide whether you will use chat or the API, then check that product’s current model, context, output, file, and request limits.
- Estimate the manuscript’s tokens. For an API workflow, use Anthropic’s token-counting facility on the actual request. Include the source text, instructions, glossary, and other context—not just the book.
- Budget for the translation. Leave sufficient output capacity for the translated sections. A source-only estimate cannot establish that a complete source-and-translation request will fit.
- Account for the file and PDF constraints. Check request size and page limits as well as context. For image-heavy or complex PDFs, extraction and page images may affect processing; token capacity alone does not establish that layout or illustrations will be preserved.
- Split the work if needed. If the estimated request approaches any applicable limit, work with smaller logical sections rather than trying to send the whole book at once.
Translate in chapters or other coherent sections
Use chapters or natural breaks in the text, and choose section sizes by token count rather than by a universal number of pages. A consistent workflow helps prevent terminology drift and makes omissions easier to spot.
- Keep a compact glossary for recurring terms, names, and preferred translations.
- Provide the same concise style guidance for each section.
- Maintain a brief summary of earlier sections when context is needed for continuity.
- Review section boundaries for missing passages, duplicated text, inconsistent terms, and abrupt transitions.
- Treat illustrations and page layout as a separate production concern if they need to be retained; the PDF token guidance alone does not promise a layout-preserving book translation.
Anthropic recommends splitting large PDFs and estimating requests with token counting. Its documentation describes processing limits, not comparative translation-quality results, so careful review remains important for a book-length project.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. When prompt caching helps—and when it does not
For repeated API requests that reuse the same document context or stable instructions, prompt caching may make repeated processing more efficient under Anthropic’s documented conditions. It does not increase the model’s context window or make an oversized request valid. Check the prompt-caching documentation and the rate-limit documentation for applicable behavior. Do not assume caching changes the token capacity available for a full-book translation.
