Can ChatGPT predict the conditions needed to synthesize a metal–organic framework (MOF)? A 2023 study by Zhiling Zheng and colleagues shows how ChatGPT can help extract reported synthesis details from scientific papers and use the resulting structured data in a trained model that predicts experimental crystallization outcomes. It does not show that a general-purpose ChatGPT session can independently produce an optimal, experimentally validated recipe.
How the ChatGPT-assisted workflow worked
MOF synthesis procedures are described in scientific papers written in varied formats and styles. Zheng and colleagues used prompt engineering—what they called ChemPrompt Engineering—to guide ChatGPT through text-mining tasks that turn those narrative reports into structured synthesis information. The workflow used three text-mining processes with different trade-offs among labor, speed, and accuracy.
The authors describe the approach as automating the extraction of reported conditions, rather than asking a chatbot to invent a recipe. The extracted information was then unified into data that could be used for prediction and for a literature-grounded chatbot answering questions about reactions and synthesis procedures. In their 2023 paper, the authors reported extracting 26,257 distinct synthesis parameters covering approximately 800 MOFs. They reported 90–99% precision, recall, and F1 scores for the text-mining tasks, and over 87% accuracy for a separate model predicting experimental crystallization outcomes.

These figures apply to the study’s workflow and its evaluations. Text-mining scores measure how well the system extracted information; they are not the same as prediction accuracy. The outcome model’s accuracy is not a guarantee that a proposed experiment will succeed, nor does it establish performance for every MOF family or a newly encountered synthesis problem.
What “predicts synthesis conditions” means here
The distinction is important: the paper’s central pipeline mines conditions that researchers have already reported, structures those data, and trains a machine-learning model to predict crystallization outcomes. Its chatbot is grounded in the extracted literature for questions about reactions and procedures. The reported results do not establish that an ungrounded ChatGPT conversation can reliably recommend new conditions, or that newly predicted recipes were broadly validated in laboratory experiments.

In practical terms, this is a computational research workflow for organizing literature and estimating experimental outcomes—not a substitute for checking the original procedure, assessing whether it applies to a particular MOF, and validating conditions in the lab. The study’s reported metrics also should not be assumed to transfer to current ChatGPT models.

A separate 2024 system, ChatMOF, was presented for predicting and generating MOFs using large language models. It is related field context, not a later name or version for Zheng and colleagues’ 2023 literature-mining workflow. The systems address different tasks: extracting reported synthesis data and predicting outcomes is distinct from generating framework proposals. The 2024 ChatMOF paper describes that separate system.
