Not proven against facial recognition in general. Cap_able’s vivid Manifesto Collection was reported to fool YOLO, a computer-vision system, into misclassifying a wearer as an animal rather than a person. That is a reported person-detection result—not proof that the garments defeat face detection or identity matching across surveillance systems.

What the garments are designed to do

Cap_able’s Manifesto Collection is knitwear incorporating adversarial patterns: visual designs intended to give computer-vision software misleading cues. Designer and cofounder Rachele Didero described the method as putting “adversarial patches” onto knitted fabric to deceive person detectors in real time, in an interview with Politecnico di Milano.

The institutional profile says the garments were tested using YOLO and that the system sometimes classified wearers as animals, including dogs, zebras, or giraffes, rather than people. That is the documented technical claim. The available account does not establish how often the effect occurred or that it works across other models, cameras, lighting, distances, or real-world deployments.

Person detection is not the same as recognizing a face

“Facial recognition” can refer to several different stages in a computer-vision pipeline. A system may first detect a person, then locate a face, and then compare facial features with stored data to estimate or verify identity. These tasks are related but not interchangeable.

  • Embrace the anti-surveillance, anti-facial recognition movement with this adversarial design. Pixelated aesthetic of retro video games and digital art. A nod to the retro-futuristic style of electronic music genres like synthwave, vaporwave, and chiptune.
  • Appeals to fans of streetwear urban fashion, retro video games, festivals, raves, 80s and 90s pop culture, tech, cyberpunk, and and artificial intelligence. Disclaimer: May not provide complete protection against surveillance under all circumstances
  • Lightweight, Classic fit, Double-needle sleeve and bottom hem
  • Person detection asks whether an image contains a person. The reported Cap_able test concerns this stage: YOLO allegedly labeled wearers as something other than a person.
  • Face detection locates a face in an image. The sources do not document a broad test showing that the garments prevent face detectors from finding faces.
  • Face recognition compares a detected face with other faces or a database to identify or verify someone. The sources do not establish that Cap_able garments defeat this matching step.

If a particular system relies on a person detector before it analyzes faces, a mistaken person-detection result could stop that pipeline from reaching a later stage. Politecnico di Milano describes that as the intended mechanism. It is not evidence that every surveillance system uses the same sequence, or that identity matching itself has been defeated.

What the evidence does—and does not—show

In a Repubblica interview, cofounder Federica Busani said the garments block an AI process before it begins analyzing details such as facial features and eye position. That is the company’s explanation of its intended effect, not an independent validation of performance against commercial face-recognition systems.

  • Inspired by the art project Project Hyperface (no affiliation). WE DO NOT GUARANTEE the effectiveness of this pattern against artificial intelligence algorithms.

The sources do not provide a numerical success rate, a broad independent comparison, or evidence that the garments reliably prevent identification in actual surveillance use. A 2026 Guardian feature likewise notes that effectiveness depends on the surveillance system and operating conditions. Its discussion of the wider fashion field does not turn the original YOLO account into a current, independent test of Cap_able.

The privacy tradeoff is deliberately visible

The collection is fashion as well as a technology-oriented privacy statement. Its strong, conspicuous patterns are meant to be visible to people, not to blend into ordinary clothing. ZoneModa Journal discusses this tension between the garments’ visual impact and their privacy ambitions in its fashion-design coverage. The look may make the message legible, but it also means the clothing is not an unobtrusive way to avoid attention.

Glitchgear Anti-Surveillance Pixelated Pullover Hoodie
  • Embrace the anti-surveillance, anti-facial recognition movement with this adversarial design. Pixelated aesthetic of retro video games and digital art. A nod to the retro-futuristic style of electronic music genres like synthwave, vaporwave, and chiptune.
  • Appeals to fans of streetwear urban fashion, retro video games, festivals, raves, 80s and 90s pop culture, tech, cyberpunk, and and artificial intelligence. Disclaimer: May not provide complete protection against surveillance under all circumstances
  • 8.5 oz, Classic fit, Twill-taped neck

Historical coverage in Repubblica quotes Didero describing designs that use 14 colours and two broad shape types; those are design details, not measures of effectiveness. Politecnico di Milano reported that knitting the parts of one hoodie takes seven hours before the pieces are cut and assembled by hand. That figure describes production in the profile, not a current order lead time.

What to check before treating any garment as protection

Adversarial clothing should be judged by the exact claim being made, rather than by the general promise of “beating facial recognition.” When assessing Cap_able or another design, look for:

Adversarial Anti-Facial Recognition Camouflage Invisibility T-Shirt
  • Adversarial Anti-Facial Recognition Camouflage Invisibility. This abstract clothing simulation uses a perturbation pattern to confuse and fool AI Automatic Surveillance Cameras and Person Detectors allowing you to hide from the Orwellian Big-Brother.
  • Adversarial Anti-Facial Recognition Camouflage Invisibility. Get your very own personal invisibility cloak to become virtually invisible from face recognition security systems technology. Disclaimer: There is no guarantee it will hide you 100% of the time.
  • Lightweight, Classic fit, Double-needle sleeve and bottom hem
  • The specific stage tested: person detection, face detection, or identity matching.
  • The named model, camera setup, distance, lighting, viewing angles, and clothing conditions.
  • Whether the results come from an independent evaluation or the designer’s own account.
  • Whether tests cover the real system and setting relevant to your concern.
  • Practical tradeoffs such as conspicuousness, comfort, availability, and price.

The sources reviewed do not establish current price, stock, Amazon availability, or a current direct-sales channel for the Cap_able Manifesto sweater. Historical preorder reporting should not be treated as proof that it is available now.
