Yes. The National Cancer Institute (NCI) reports that the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) found sufficient evidence that asbestos causes ovarian cancer. That finding recognizes a population-level cause; it does not mean that everyone exposed will develop cancer or calculate any one person’s risk.

What the asbestos–ovarian cancer link means

Asbestos is a group of naturally occurring fibrous minerals. When asbestos-containing materials are disturbed, tiny fibers can become airborne. Exposure can occur at work, in a community, or at home. NCI’s fact sheet reports IARC’s conclusion that asbestos causes ovarian cancer, as well as mesothelioma and cancers of the lung and larynx. The conclusion is based on IARC’s evaluation in Arsenic, Metals, Fibres and Dusts, Monographs volume 100C (2012), as summarized by NCI in its fact sheet reviewed May 20, 2021: NCI: Asbestos Exposure and Cancer Risk Fact Sheet.

“Sufficient evidence” is a conclusion about whether asbestos can cause a cancer in people. It is not a prediction that a particular exposure will lead to disease.

Does exposure mean you will get ovarian cancer?

No. Asbestos exposure does not mean a person will develop ovarian cancer. NCI says asbestos-related disease risk generally rises with heavier and longer exposure, but individual circumstances also matter. Most people who become ill from asbestos have had regular workplace exposure or substantial environmental contact; that context is not a threshold proving that a smaller or shorter exposure was harmless. See NCI’s Asbestos overview.

The NCI sources cited here do not provide an ovarian-cancer-specific percentage or other personal risk estimate. The IARC evidence classification cannot be used to calculate an individual’s probability of developing ovarian cancer.

Why risk can differ between people

There is no simple exposure detail that turns into a personal risk calculation. NCI identifies several considerations for asbestos-related disease generally:

  • Exposure amount and duration: heavier and longer exposure is generally associated with greater risk.
  • Source and setting: exposure may come from work, the surrounding environment, or a home where asbestos-containing materials are disturbed.
  • Fiber characteristics: size, shape, and composition can matter.
  • Individual factors: NCI also lists smoking, pre-existing lung disease, and some genetic factors as relevant to asbestos-related disease generally.

These considerations do not establish a quantified ovarian-cancer effect for each factor, and they are not a diagnostic formula. A healthcare professional can help discuss an exposure history in context.

Ovarian cancer and peritoneal mesothelioma are different diseases

Both cancers may involve the abdomen, but they arise in different tissues. Ovarian cancer arises in ovarian tissue. Mesothelioma develops in the mesothelium, the lining that covers organs and includes the peritoneum, which lines the abdominal cavity. Peritoneal mesothelioma is therefore not another name for ovarian cancer. NCI explains the distinction in its pages on ovarian, fallopian tube, and primary peritoneal cancer prevention and mesothelioma.

What to do with an exposure concern

If you are concerned about past asbestos exposure, share what you know about its source, setting, approximate duration, and circumstances with a healthcare professional. If you have symptoms or questions about screening, seek medical advice rather than relying on an exposure history alone. The NCI material cited here does not establish an asbestos-specific ovarian-cancer screening test. A home test kit, supplement, or consumer device should not be treated as a way to diagnose or prevent asbestos-linked ovarian cancer.
