Yes. Apple TV 4K can deliver Dolby Atmos without an eARC-equipped television when you connect it directly to a Dolby Atmos-capable soundbar or AV receiver. Run a second HDMI cable from that audio device to the TV. What does not work is sending Apple TV 4K’s high-bandwidth Atmos output from the TV to the soundbar over ordinary HDMI ARC. Apple states that this Atmos output “doesn’t work over ARC connections.”
The two connection paths have different results
Whether Atmos works depends on where the Apple TV’s audio is decoded and which HDMI return path carries it. There are two common layouts:
| Layout | Signal route | Apple TV 4K Atmos result |
|---|---|---|
| Direct connection to audio device | Apple TV 4K HDMI output → soundbar or AV receiver HDMI input → audio device HDMI output → TV HDMI input | Supported, provided the soundbar or receiver supports Dolby Atmos and passes through the video formats you use. |
| TV-first connection with ARC | Apple TV 4K HDMI output → TV HDMI input → TV ARC port → soundbar or receiver | Apple says the Apple TV’s high-bandwidth Dolby Atmos output does not work over ordinary ARC. |
| TV-first connection with eARC | Apple TV 4K HDMI output → TV HDMI input → TV eARC port → soundbar or receiver | This is the usual return-path arrangement for high-bandwidth audio, but it is not required when the Apple TV connects directly to the audio device. |
ARC and eARC are therefore not interchangeable in this specific Apple TV 4K setup. The limitation concerns Apple TV 4K’s documented Atmos output over an ARC return connection; it is not a claim that every Atmos source or every audio format fails over every ARC implementation.

- Connect an HDMI cable from the Apple TV 4K to an available HDMI input on the Dolby Atmos soundbar or AV receiver.
- Connect the audio device’s HDMI output, often labelled HDMI OUT or eARC/ARC, to an HDMI input on the TV. The TV does not need eARC for this direct-source arrangement.
- Select the audio device’s HDMI input as the source. Select the corresponding TV HDMI input for the picture.
- On the Apple TV 4K, open Settings > Video and Audio > Audio Format and inspect the Immersive Audio section. Dolby Atmos should be available when the connected equipment advertises compatible capabilities.
- Play a title whose information identifies a Dolby Atmos audio track, then confirm that the soundbar or receiver reports Atmos. A title without an Atmos track cannot produce Atmos merely because the hardware supports it.
This arrangement avoids the TV-to-soundbar ARC return path that Apple identifies as incompatible with Apple TV 4K’s high-bandwidth Atmos output.
Equipment requirements
Apple TV 4K
Apple’s technical specifications list Dolby Atmos and Dolby Digital Plus 7.1 among Apple TV 4K’s supported audio formats. An HDMI cable is required and is sold separately. The Apple TV must be connected by HDMI; this workaround does not use optical audio or an analog connection.
Dolby Atmos soundbar or AV receiver
The audio device needs both an HDMI input for the Apple TV and an HDMI output that can pass the picture to the television. An “Atmos” label by itself is not enough: check the exact model’s port configuration and supported signal formats.
Television
The TV needs a free HDMI input for the audio device’s output. ARC can remain available for other sources, but it is not the path carrying Apple TV 4K’s Atmos in this wiring scheme. The TV’s own video capabilities still determine which picture modes you can see, subject to the audio device’s passthrough limits.

HDMI cables
Use a suitable HDMI cable for Apple TV 4K and the video modes in your system. Apple identifies an HDMI cable as required. Cable packaging alone cannot compensate for an audio device that lacks the needed HDMI input, output, or video passthrough support.
Check video passthrough before buying or rewiring
Routing the Apple TV through a soundbar or receiver adds a video compatibility checkpoint. Some Atmos-capable devices do not pass every HDR or resolution format that the TV and Apple TV can otherwise use. Apple specifically warns that an Atmos soundbar or receiver may not support formats such as HDR10 or Dolby Vision.
Before selecting a device, compare these specifications for the exact model:
- Number and type of HDMI inputs, including whether one is intended for an external streamer.
- Presence of an HDMI output that passes video to the TV.
- Dolby Atmos decoding support on the HDMI input used by Apple TV 4K.
- Passthrough support for the formats you actually watch, especially HDR10 and Dolby Vision where applicable.
- Supported resolution and refresh-rate combinations for your Apple TV and television.
- Whether the manufacturer requires a particular HDMI input or firmware version for Atmos or advanced video modes.
If the audio device accepts Atmos but strips Dolby Vision or another required picture mode, the workaround may solve audio while degrading video. In that case, an eARC-capable TV or a different audio device with suitable passthrough may be preferable.

Configure Apple TV 4K and verify the content
Apple TV’s audio menu reports what the connected chain makes available. Go to Settings > Video and Audio > Audio Format, then look under Immersive Audio for Dolby Atmos. If Atmos is missing, treat that as a configuration or capability problem rather than assuming the program lacks Atmos.
Next, open the movie, show, or music title’s information panel. Apple says supported content can display an Atmos icon or identify an Atmos track in its audio information. Not every title, episode, language track, or service offers Atmos, so test with content explicitly marked for it.
The soundbar or receiver may show “Dolby Atmos,” “Atmos,” or a similar input-mode indicator. The exact label varies by manufacturer; the important check is that the device is receiving and decoding an Atmos stream rather than a stereo or conventional surround fallback.

Atmos does not appear in Apple TV settings
- Confirm the Apple TV is connected to the soundbar or receiver HDMI input, not directly to the TV.
- Confirm the second HDMI cable runs from the audio device’s HDMI output to the TV.
- Verify that the selected audio-device input supports Dolby Atmos; some models reserve advanced formats for specific ports.
- Power-cycle the Apple TV, audio device, and TV after changing the wiring so HDMI capability information is renegotiated.
- Recheck Settings > Video and Audio > Audio Format and the Immersive Audio entry.
The picture works but Atmos does not
Video passthrough can function even when the audio device does not accept the Apple TV’s Atmos stream on that input. Check the model’s Atmos input specifications and confirm that the soundbar or receiver is not set to a stereo, PCM-only, or manually forced mode. Also test a title that is explicitly marked Atmos.

Atmos works but HDR10 or Dolby Vision is missing
This points to passthrough capability rather than the ARC limitation. Compare the audio device’s supported HDR and Dolby Vision formats with the Apple TV and TV settings. If the device cannot pass the desired format, connect the source and audio device differently only if the resulting audio path still supports Atmos, or replace the audio device with one whose HDMI specifications cover both the audio and video requirements.
The soundbar shows stereo or another surround format
Check the title’s audio track, the Apple TV output setting, and the soundbar’s input indicator. A program without an Atmos track will legitimately play another format. If Atmos content still falls back, reseat both HDMI cables, select the correct soundbar input, and verify the receiver or soundbar has not been configured to downmix incoming audio.
Choosing between a soundbar and an AV receiver
Both categories can solve the no-eARC problem when they provide the same essential HDMI path. A soundbar is generally simpler for a single-screen setup; an AV receiver may offer more HDMI inputs for several sources and separate speakers. The deciding factor is not the category name but the exact HDMI and format specification.

|---|---|
| Atmos support on an HDMI input | The Apple TV must be able to send its Atmos stream to that input. |
| HDMI input count | Determines whether the Apple TV and other sources can connect directly without repeatedly swapping cables. |
| HDMI output with video passthrough | Carries the picture from the audio device to the TV. |
| HDR10 and Dolby Vision support | Prevents the audio device from becoming a video-format bottleneck. |
| Exact port labeling and specifications | Some models support different formats on different ports, so generic “Atmos” branding is insufficient. |
What ordinary ARC can and cannot do here
ARC can still be useful for other television audio workflows, and compatibility varies by source and format. The specific documented restriction is Apple TV 4K’s high-bandwidth Dolby Atmos output traveling from the TV back to the soundbar or receiver over ordinary ARC. Do not interpret it as a universal statement that no Atmos signal can ever use ARC. For this Apple TV path, however, Apple’s supported remedy is direct HDMI connection to the Atmos audio device.

When eARC is still worthwhile
eARC is useful when you want to connect the Apple TV and other sources directly to the TV while sending their audio back to a soundbar or receiver through the television. It can simplify cabling and preserve high-bandwidth formats that ordinary ARC cannot carry. It is not a prerequisite for the direct Apple TV-to-audio-device arrangement described above.
Choose the eARC layout only after checking that the TV, audio device, and source all support the formats you need. Choose direct passthrough when the TV lacks eARC and the soundbar or receiver has the necessary HDMI input, output, Atmos decoding, and video-format support.
Practical decision checklist
- TV has no eARC: connect Apple TV 4K to the soundbar or receiver first.
- TV has only ARC: do not rely on the TV-to-audio ARC return for Apple TV 4K’s high-bandwidth Atmos.
- Audio device has no HDMI input: it cannot use this direct-source workaround; look for a different connection design.
- Audio device has HDMI input but limited passthrough: verify HDR10, Dolby Vision, resolution, and refresh-rate support before purchase.
- Atmos option is missing: inspect the HDMI wiring, input selection, Apple TV audio menu, device settings, and title metadata.
- Atmos is available but not audible: confirm the program’s track and the soundbar or receiver’s incoming-format indicator.
The short version is straightforward: eARC is optional when Apple TV 4K plugs directly into an Atmos-capable soundbar or AV receiver, but ordinary ARC is not a working return path for Apple’s high-bandwidth Atmos output.
