Short answer: Apple documents two separate searches. The main Apple Podcasts search is for podcast discovery—categories, show names, topics and related catalog information. To find a word or phrase that was spoken, open an episode that has a transcript and use the transcript’s own Search control. Apple does not document whether transcript text is indexed by the global catalog search, so it is too strong to say definitively that Apple Podcasts searches only titles and descriptions.
The documented distinction: catalog search versus transcript search
Apple’s user guides describe the main Search experience as a way to discover podcasts by categories, show names, topics and “more.” From those results, you can open a show or episode and start listening. The catalog-search documentation does not list the words spoken in an episode as a searchable field.
Transcript search is described separately. When an episode transcript is available, Apple lets you search that transcript for a specific word or phrase and jump to the matching passage. This search happens inside the opened episode’s transcript view, not in the general catalog-search screen.

That distinction supports a practical answer: if you remember a spoken phrase, do not assume that entering it in the main Search field will find every episode where it occurs. Use catalog search to locate a likely show or episode, open its transcript, and then search within that transcript. Apple has not published a statement confirming that transcript text is excluded from its global index, nor one confirming that the global field indexes it. The careful description is therefore about the two documented workflows, not an undocumented claim about Apple’s backend.

What each search workflow is documented to search
| Workflow | Documented purpose | Where you search | What it can do for a spoken phrase |
|---|---|---|---|
| Apple Podcasts catalog search | Discover podcasts using categories, show names, topics and related catalog information | The main Search experience | It may lead you to the relevant show or episode, but Apple does not list transcript wording as a catalog-search field |
| Episode transcript search | Find a word or phrase in the text of one episode | The transcript view for an opened episode | Finds matching text in that episode and lets you move to the corresponding point in playback |
“Titles and descriptions only” is consequently an overstatement of what Apple’s public documentation establishes. Titles and descriptions are common catalog metadata, but Apple’s guide uses the broader wording “categories, show names, topics and more.” It does not enumerate every field in the catalog or reveal the ranking and indexing system behind Search.
How to search an episode transcript on iPhone or iPad
Apple’s iPhone and iPad instructions require an episode transcript to be present. The control appears in the transcript view, so first open the episode rather than searching for the phrase in the app-wide field.
- Open Apple Podcasts and select the show or episode you want to investigate. You can reach it by browsing or by using the main Search experience.
- Open the episode’s transcript view. The exact placement of the transcript entry can vary with the episode and the current app interface, but it is available only when Apple has a transcript for that episode.
- Tap Search in the transcript view.
- Enter the word or phrase you remember. Transcript search looks for that text in the episode transcript.
- Select a matching result to move to the corresponding section. Apple describes the transcript as interactive: tapping text can start playback from that point in the episode.
If Search is missing, that is normally an availability issue rather than proof that the episode contains no matching words. Check whether the episode has a transcript at all, whether processing has finished, and whether the language and distribution arrangement are supported.

How to search an episode transcript on a Mac
On Mac, Apple’s instructions call the control Search Transcript. You can first locate an episode while browsing or searching, then open its transcript and search inside it.
- In Podcasts, browse or use the main Search field to locate a show or episode.
- Select the episode and open its transcript.
- Choose Search Transcript in the transcript view.
- Type the word or phrase. Select a result to go to that location in the transcript and begin playback from the related point.
The fact that an episode can be selected after catalog searching does not turn the catalog query into a transcript query. It is a two-stage process: discovery first, then text search within the selected episode.

- Break the memory into a few uncommon keywords. A short, distinctive phrase is more useful than a long sentence that may have been transcribed differently.
- Run those keywords through the main catalog Search field to identify likely shows, topics or episodes. Treat the results as leads, not as proof that Apple searched the spoken words.
- Open the most plausible episode and look for its transcript.
- Use Search on iPhone or iPad, or Search Transcript on Mac.
- Try spelling and wording variations. Automatic transcripts can differ from what a speaker actually said, especially with names, acronyms, accents, overlapping voices or background noise.
- If no transcript is available, use the show’s episode list, published description, chapter information where provided, or another transcript supplied by the publisher. Apple’s documented in-app transcript search cannot operate without transcript text.
Why a transcript may not be available
Transcript search depends on the transcript existing and being processed. Apple’s creator guidance describes several limits that affect whether you see one.
Processing time for new episodes
Apple says transcripts are automatically generated after a new episode is published, but generation is not immediate. Its troubleshooting guidance recommends checking again after at least 24 hours when a transcript has not appeared. A newly released episode can therefore be searchable in the catalog before its transcript is ready.
Supported languages and regional availability
Apple’s current creator guidance lists English, Danish, Dutch, Finnish, French, German, Italian, Norwegian, Portuguese, Spanish and Swedish as supported transcript languages. Apple also says transcripts can be accessed in more than 170 countries and regions. Those are availability statements from Apple’s guidance accessed in 2026, and Apple may change the supported list or regional coverage.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
A show can therefore have transcripts for some episodes, languages or listeners but not others. Changing a device language does not guarantee that an unsupported episode will acquire a transcript.
Automatic versus creator-provided transcripts
Creators can provide transcript text through RSS transcript tags, and subscriber episodes can use transcript uploads in Apple Podcasts Connect. A creator-supplied transcript may appear even when an automatically generated transcript is not used, but it still depends on the episode’s distribution and Apple’s supported setup.
Private RSS distribution
Apple says private RSS episodes that are not distributed in the Apple Podcasts catalog do not display transcripts. If you access an episode through a private feed, the absence of an in-app transcript is an expected limitation of that distribution path, not evidence that Apple’s catalog search ignored a phrase.

Episodes longer than 10 hours
Apple’s creator guidance says episodes over 10 hours may not be transcribed. This is a stated limit, not a guarantee that every shorter episode will receive a transcript.
Audio and episode-specific conditions
Apple identifies audio quality, cross-talk, loud music, language support and episode-specific settings as factors that can affect transcript availability or quality. Even when a transcript exists, these conditions can produce missing, misspelled or incorrectly separated words. Search can find only the text that was actually generated or supplied.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What to do when a phrase cannot be found
- Confirm you are searching the transcript: The app-wide Search field and the transcript’s Search control are different interfaces.
- Check the episode date: For a new release, allow at least 24 hours before treating a missing transcript as a failure.
- Check the language: The current Apple list covers eleven languages; an episode outside that support may not have a transcript.
- Try shorter terms: Search one distinctive word at a time, then try alternate spellings or a nearby phrase.
- Look for homophones and names: Automatic speech recognition may transcribe a proper name or acronym differently from your memory.
- Check the distribution type: Private RSS episodes do not display transcripts in Apple Podcasts.
- Consider duration: An episode longer than 10 hours may not be transcribed.
- Use another source for the text: If the publisher supplies a transcript outside Apple Podcasts, that copy may be the only practical way to search the episode.
What Apple has said about the feature
Apple announced transcripts for Apple Podcasts on March 5, 2024. The announcement described the feature in these terms: “With transcripts, users can read the full text of an episode, search for a specific word or phrase, and tap on the text to play the podcast from that point in the episode.” That wording describes searching an episode’s full text; it does not promise a catalog-wide spoken-word search.
The same announcement quoted Sarah Herrlinger, Apple’s senior director of Global Accessibility Policy & Initiatives, saying: “Introducing transcripts on Apple Podcasts builds on Apple’s commitment to making products and services for everyone.” The launch announcement initially covered four languages and said back-catalog episodes would be transcribed over time. Apple’s current creator guidance is the better reference for present language and regional availability.
Does Apple Podcasts search only episode titles and descriptions?
No definitive “only” answer is supported by Apple’s public documentation. Apple describes catalog Search in terms of categories, show names, topics and more, without publishing a complete list of indexed fields. It separately documents transcript searching inside an opened episode. Therefore:
- Use catalog Search for finding shows and episodes through the information Apple exposes as podcast-discovery metadata.
- Use an episode’s transcript Search control for an exact word or phrase in spoken content.
- Do not rely on a catalog query to discover every episode that contains a particular spoken sentence.
- Do not claim that Apple has confirmed transcript text is never indexed globally; Apple has not made that negative statement in the cited guides.
Quick decision guide
| Your goal | Best action | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Find a show about a subject | Use the main Apple Podcasts Search experience | Apple describes this as catalog discovery by categories, show names, topics and more |
| Find a phrase spoken in a known episode | Open the episode and use Search or Search Transcript | A transcript must be available and processed |
| Find an unknown episode from one remembered sentence | Use catalog Search for leads, then search transcripts of likely episodes | The documented workflow is episode-by-episode, not a confirmed global transcript index |
| Search a new episode immediately | Wait for transcript processing and check again after 24 hours | Catalog availability can precede transcript availability |
| Search a private RSS episode | Use a transcript supplied by the publisher or another text source | Apple says private RSS episodes not distributed in its catalog do not display transcripts |
Bottom line for everyday use
Apple Podcasts does let you search transcript text, but the documented control is inside an individual episode transcript. The main catalog Search is documented as podcast discovery by categories, show names, topics and related information; Apple does not document transcript wording as a global-search field and does not disclose its complete indexing rules. For a spoken phrase, locate the likely episode, open its transcript, and search there. If that control is absent, check processing time, language and region support, distribution type, episode length and audio conditions before concluding that the words are not present.
