Yes, an open model could be adapted into a car-and-motorcycle buying advisor, but fine-tuning alone would not prove it gives good recommendations. The project is best treated as a proposed system: the friend’s knowledge, covered vehicles, buyer needs, and performance have not been specified or demonstrated.
What Garage Brain would do
Garage Brain describes a focused advisor that uses one person’s knowledge of cars and motorcycles to help a buyer make a choice. That is different from asking a model to diagnose a fault or explain a repair. Existing automotive AI examples in the sources discussed here focus on diagnostics and repair; they do not establish that a model can match vehicles to buyers or give dependable purchase advice.
The distinction matters because buying advice involves more than recognizing automotive terminology. The advisor would need to understand a buyer’s constraints and preferences, draw on the friend’s relevant knowledge, distinguish known facts from assumptions, and say when it lacks enough information.

Fine-tuning is one plausible way to shape a pretrained model’s responses using examples of the domain and the preferred question-and-answer style. NVIDIA’s documentation explains supervised fine-tuning (SFT) and parameter-efficient fine-tuning (PEFT), including LoRA, which trains adapters while keeping the base model frozen. NVIDIA says its documented PEFT approach reduces trainable parameters to less than 1% of the original model; that describes the method, not a training result for Garage Brain.
#1 Best Overall
A fine-tuning workflow typically includes configuration, training, evaluation, and optionally publishing or deployment. Fine-tuning can help teach a model how to use examples or follow a response format, but it does not automatically make its answers accurate, current, or suited to a particular buyer.
Should it use retrieval instead of, or alongside, fine-tuning?
Retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) lets a model consult selected reference material when responding. For an advisor whose answers need to draw on explicit documents or a changing knowledge base, retrieval is worth testing alongside fine-tuning. The two techniques address different needs: fine-tuning changes learned response behavior, while retrieval supplies material for the model to consult at answer time.
Rank #2
An automotive RAG project evaluated a system using Qwen/Qwen2.5-3B-Instruct. Its repository reports an average score of 0.840 for the final RAG system and 0.802 for its no-RAG counterpart, but also says the no-RAG model scored higher on the held-out split. These are project-specific evaluation measures, not universal automotive accuracy percentages or evidence about purchase recommendations. Retrieval did not improve every category in that project.

AutoRepairBench describes 117,465 ECU/DTC diagnostic pairs and 50,660 unique diagnostic trouble code values. Its repository labels the data for research use only; those figures do not make it an appropriate buying-advice corpus or establish that it is freely reusable in a commercial product. The repository lists CIKM 2026 dates of November 7–11, 2026, which are future dates as of October 11, 2026.

- Comprehensive troubleshooting and fault-finding guides to quickly diagnose problems and reduce costly downtime.
A Toyota/Lexus assistant and the automotive RAG project are also repair-oriented examples. They show that automotive assistants can be built for adjacent tasks, not that those systems validate vehicle recommendations, preference matching, or a buyer’s assessment of a particular used vehicle.
How to test whether the advisor is useful
Build a set of buyer questions that reflects the people and vehicles Garage Brain is meant to cover, then compare plain prompting, fine-tuning, and retrieval on the same held-out questions. Do not train on the test questions. Assess the answers against criteria tied to real buyer decisions:
Rank #4
- Recommendation fit: Does the answer account for the buyer’s stated needs, constraints, and preferences?
- Support: Can the answer distinguish information grounded in the friend’s knowledge or supplied references from general model output?
- Uncertainty: Does it ask for missing details or acknowledge when it cannot support a confident recommendation?
- Coverage: Does it handle the intended cars, motorcycles, use cases, and buyer constraints—or reveal important gaps?
- Changing facts: Can the approach handle vehicle details that may change, and can the buyer tell what information the answer relies on?
- Practical cost: What data preparation, upkeep, and deployment work does each approach require?
This evaluation plan is guidance for the proposed project, not a reported Garage Brain test. Results from repair-focused systems cannot substitute for testing the buying-advisor task directly.

The project title does not specify the friend’s knowledge domain, target market, data rights, vehicle coverage, or the buyer workflow. Those choices determine what examples and references are relevant and what a meaningful evaluation should measure. Before building a corpus, establish that the knowledge can be used for the intended purpose and decide which vehicles and buyer questions the advisor will cover.
Keep purchase advice separate from inspection
A model’s recommendation is not evidence of a vehicle’s actual condition. It cannot inspect a car or motorcycle, verify a seller’s claims, or replace an appropriate in-person assessment. The automotive RAG project states: “The system is not a replacement for the factory service manual or a trained technician.” For a buying advisor, the same boundary means its output should not be presented as a mechanical inspection, definitive condition report, diagnosis, or safety-critical judgment.
Make clear which statements come from the friend’s supplied knowledge or reference material, which are general suggestions, and which require verification outside the model. When the answer depends on a vehicle’s present condition, the advisor should direct the buyer to an inspection rather than infer a condition from a description.
