An “analog TV antenna” is usually just a conventional TV antenna described with an outdated label. In the United States, full-power broadcast stations switched to digital-only transmission on June 12, 2009, but viewers do not need a special antenna marketed as “digital.” A suitable antenna must receive the VHF and UHF signals used by local stations. If your television has only an analog tuner, you also need a digital-to-analog converter box.

What is an analog TV antenna?

It is generally a standard television antenna that receives broadcast signals over the air. The phrase does not identify a special antenna design that is required for analog broadcasts today. The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) says digital TV reception uses the same general types of rooftop or set-top antennas used for analog reception. What matters is whether the antenna can receive the VHF and UHF bands used by the stations you want to watch.

In the United States, full-power TV broadcast stations were required to stop broadcasting in analog and transmit only digitally by June 12, 2009, according to the FCC’s consumer information document. This describes the transition for full-power stations; it does not mean that every television set became a digital TV or that every local reception setup works the same way.

Do you need a digital antenna?

No special “digital antenna” is required just because the broadcast signal is digital. An ordinary VHF/UHF TV antenna can receive digital broadcasts if it is suitable for the stations and reception conditions at your location. The FCC explicitly says viewers do not need a special “digital ready” or “HD ready” antenna in its antenna placement guidance.

When choosing an antenna, focus on practical fit rather than the word “digital” on the packaging:

  • Band coverage: Check whether it supports VHF, UHF, or both, based on the stations available near you.
  • Installation type: An indoor antenna is easier to place, while rooftop or other outdoor installation may be needed where indoor reception is inadequate.
  • Station direction and placement: Local stations may come from different directions, and the antenna needs to be positioned accordingly.
  • Your space: Consider whether you can place the antenna higher, near a window, or outdoors if reception is weak.

Can you use an old TV antenna for digital TV?

Often, yes. An older antenna may receive digital broadcasts if it covers the relevant VHF and UHF signals and is in usable condition. Its age or an “analog” label alone does not establish whether it will work. Check the local stations and their predicted signal availability, then test reception with the antenna in a suitable position.

The FCC’s Digital TV Reception Maps estimate which stations may be available at a location. The calculations assume a rooftop antenna 30 feet above ground; that height is a modeling assumption, not a required installation height. Actual reception may differ because of terrain, buildings, trees, weather, antenna placement, and other equipment.

Do you need a converter box for an old TV?

Only if the television has an analog tuner and no built-in digital tuner. An antenna receives the broadcast signal; it does not convert digital broadcasts into a format an analog-only TV can display. For that set, connect a digital-to-analog converter box between the antenna and the television.

2026 TV Antenna for Smart TV
  • This HD antenna is compatible with both smart TVs and older models.
  • Signal for Better Reception on All TVs

A television with an over-the-air digital tuner can connect directly to a suitable antenna and scan for available channels. The FTC says that any TV set made since 2007 has a digital tuner, but this is broad consumer guidance rather than a guarantee for every individual model. If you are unsure, check the TV’s specifications or manual before buying a converter box.

How to improve over-the-air reception

If channels are missing or the picture drops out, try adjusting the antenna before assuming you need a different one. The FCC recommends experimenting with a higher position, a spot near a window, and a different direction. Rescan for channels after moving the antenna so the TV or converter box updates its channel list.

  3. Run the TV’s or converter box’s channel scan again after each meaningful position change.
  4. If indoor reception remains unreliable, consider whether a rooftop or other outdoor antenna installation is feasible.

Antenna range claims do not guarantee that you will receive a particular station or number of channels. Reception depends on local conditions and the equipment and placement used.

What an antenna does—and does not—provide

An over-the-air antenna receives broadcast stations available at your location; it does not provide every channel carried by a pay-TV package. The Federal Trade Commission warns that an OTA antenna will not provide premium channels that require cable, satellite, or online content services. Be cautious of promises that an antenna will receive all channels or that an amplifier will necessarily add stations; the FTC has warned consumers about misleading claims of this kind.

Newer broadcast technologies are a separate compatibility question. The FCC has published a 2025 draft document concerning ATSC 3.0, also called NextGen TV, but that document does not establish that every viewer needs a special antenna or receiver, or that a particular station has deployed the technology. Check local station information and device specifications if you are considering that standard.
