Some older Intel Macs may be able to run macOS Tahoe through OpenCore Legacy Patcher (OCLP), but support is model-specific and the Tahoe feature is currently in a prerelease. OCLP 3.0.0-rc.2 added Tahoe support on October 4, 2026; its developers warn that the release can cause instability, crashes, and data loss. Check your exact Mac against both Apple’s native compatibility list and OCLP’s supported-model list before considering an installation.
What the Tahoe update for old Macs actually means
OpenCore Legacy Patcher’s 3.0.0-rc.2 release notes list macOS Tahoe support as an implemented feature. The release was published October 4, 2026 and is labeled a prerelease, not a final OCLP release. It is an experimental opening for certain older Macs—not a promise that every Mac left off Apple’s list can run Tahoe.
The same release notes list other Tahoe-related work, including restored FileVault 2 support on macOS 26 and USB mappings for macOS 26, as well as wireless and non-Metal patch improvements. These are project release-note entries, not independent confirmation that every feature works on every supported Mac.
Check whether your exact Mac is eligible
There are two separate compatibility questions: does Apple support Tahoe natively on this Mac, and does OCLP list this model for patching? An Intel processor alone does not make a Mac OCLP-compatible, and a patched installation is not the same as Apple-supported compatibility.

Find your Mac’s Model Identifier
- Open Apple menu > About This Mac > More Info > System Report.
- In System Information, find the Model Identifier entry and note it exactly.
- Compare that identifier with OCLP’s supported-model list. OCLP says Apple silicon and PowerPC Macs are not supported by the patcher; a model absent from its list is unsupported.
- Check Apple’s macOS Tahoe compatibility list separately to see whether your Mac can install Tahoe natively. Apple’s page, dated September 14, 2026, lists selected recent Apple silicon and Intel Macs.
OCLP’s documentation recommends updating the Mac to its latest natively supported macOS first, which helps ensure it has the highest firmware available for its model. Use the project’s current documentation and model list when checking eligibility, since those pages can change.
Why this prerelease needs extra caution
The OCLP project’s release page states: “This is a prerelease for OpenCore Legacy Patcher 3.0.0. Expect issues resulting in instability, system crashes, and potential data loss.” That warning rules out treating this as a routine upgrade or a dependable choice for a Mac you rely on every day. The release notes do not establish installation outcomes for every listed model, how patches will behave after future macOS updates, or when a final 3.0.0 release will arrive.

If you decide to explore it, protect important data first and avoid using your only computer for an experimental installation. A Mac that Apple lists as Tahoe-compatible is the lower-risk route for native installation; whether to keep an older Mac patched instead depends on its exact model and your tolerance for the prerelease risks.

What the documented installer process requires
OCLP’s installer documentation describes downloading the macOS installer and writing it to a USB drive. It recommends a 32GB drive and warns that creating the installer formats the entire drive, so any files on it will be erased. The page says 16GB may work for older macOS versions and notes that later Sonoma and Sequoia installers may not fit on 16GB; it does not provide a Tahoe-specific capacity guarantee.
