Usually, an ISP cannot read the contents of torrent traffic carried inside a working VPN tunnel—but it can see that you connected to a VPN, and a VPN does not make torrenting anonymous. If the torrent client sends traffic outside the tunnel, or peers see your ordinary IP address, the VPN may not protect the information you expect it to.
Can my ISP see what I download through a VPN?
When the torrent client’s traffic is routed through an encrypted VPN tunnel, your ISP can generally see that your connection is communicating with a VPN endpoint and observe connection metadata, such as when the connection is active and how much data moves. It ordinarily cannot read the contents carried inside that tunnel. Encryption does not mean an ISP can infer nothing from traffic patterns, and it does not conceal the fact that you are using a VPN.
The Federal Trade Commission puts the broader privacy limit plainly: “A VPN app generally isn’t going to make you entirely anonymous.” The FTC advises users to research VPN apps and review their requested permissions and privacy policies. Read the FTC’s VPN guidance.
Who else might see your torrent activity?
BitTorrent peers
Your ISP is not the only observer. BitTorrent involves communication among peers, and those peers can see the IP address used by your client. Proton VPN’s P2P documentation says that when traffic is routed through one of its P2P servers, peers see the VPN server’s IP address rather than the user’s ordinary IP. This describes Proton VPN’s service; it is not proof of how every VPN handles peer traffic. See Proton VPN’s P2P server documentation.

The VPN provider
A VPN shifts trust from the ISP to the VPN provider for traffic routed through its servers. Review the provider’s privacy policy and terms, including what it says it collects and retains. A “no logs” statement is a provider claim, not by itself independent verification of its practices. The FTC also cautions that a VPN app does not make you anonymous.
When can a VPN fail to hide your IP from torrent peers?
The important question is whether the torrent client’s traffic actually uses the VPN interface. A misconfigured client, routing problem, or leak may send some traffic over your ordinary internet connection instead. In that case, your real IP address may be exposed even while the VPN app appears connected.

Proton VPN documents binding a compatible torrent client to the VPN interface as one way to keep the client’s traffic on that route. Its guidance also warns that choosing the ordinary internet interface can expose the real IP even when a kill switch is enabled. The exact settings and behavior depend on the VPN app, operating system, and torrent client; follow the documentation for your specific combination rather than assuming this example applies universally.
Can DNS leaks reveal what I’m doing?
DNS requests are lookups used to find the network address associated with a domain. If a request escapes the VPN tunnel, it may be visible to a DNS resolver outside the tunnel, even if other traffic is protected. Protections and exceptions vary by provider and configuration. Proton VPN documents its own DNS leak protections and circumstances in which queries may leave the tunnel; those details should not be generalized to other services. Does using a VPN make torrenting legal?
No. A VPN changes how your connection is routed; it does not change copyright rules or make an unauthorized download lawful. For U.S. context, Title 17 describes Section 512 notice-and-takedown procedures and, under statutory conditions, a subpoena process to identify an alleged infringer. A VPN is not a guarantee that an ISP notice or legal process cannot occur. The U.S. Copyright Office’s materials concern U.S. law and do not determine the rules or outcome in another country or a particular case. Consult the U.S. Copyright Office’s Title 17 materials.

- P2P policy: Check whether the provider permits peer-to-peer traffic and whether any restrictions apply.
- Kill switch: Find out what happens if the VPN connection drops, and whether the feature covers the torrent client on your device.
- Client interface binding: Confirm whether your torrent client can be bound to the VPN interface and consult the instructions for your exact app and operating system.
- DNS handling: Read the provider’s explanation of DNS routing, leak protections, and any stated exceptions.
- Privacy disclosures: Review the policy and terms, and distinguish provider statements about logging from independently verified evidence.
These checks help identify what a service claims to protect and where its limits are; they do not establish anonymity or guarantee that every torrent connection remains inside the tunnel.
