Not for people today. Injectable night-vision nanoparticles are real as a mouse experiment, but the 2019 study did not test a human treatment. It showed that injected particles could help mice detect near-infrared light and distinguish patterns; it did not show that people can get night vision without goggles. For now, external night-vision hardware remains the practical option.
How could an injection make invisible light visible?
Ordinary mammalian vision has a spectral limit: the 2019 paper by Ma and colleagues in Cell describes mammals as unable to see light above approximately 700 nanometres. Near-infrared (NIR) light is beyond that range, so it normally does not trigger vision.
The researchers injected photoreceptor-binding upconversion nanoparticles, or pbUCNPs, into mouse eyes. The particles attached to photoreceptors and acted like tiny light converters: they absorbed longer-wavelength NIR photons and emitted visible-range light that could activate retinal signaling. The University of Technology Sydney’s 2019 research record describes the mice as visualizing NIR around one micrometre.

This is not a miniature camera or a pair of goggles placed inside the eye. The particles alter how incoming light reaches the visual system; they do not capture a scene, display an image, or make all darkness visible.

What did the experiment demonstrate?
The Cell study tested the effect at several levels, from individual photoreceptors and retinal responses to activity in the visual cortex and animal behavior. The mice detected NIR and discriminated complex NIR shape patterns, rather than merely reacting to a single flash. The researchers also reported that the enhancement was compatible with ambient daylight, and the mice retained ordinary visible-light vision.
UMass Chan described the enhancement as temporary and said it did not interfere with visible-light vision. The institutional account does not establish a specific duration that could be promised for a person or a future treatment.

Could it replace night-vision goggles?
It is a possible future direction, not a present replacement. An eye injection and removable external hardware differ in evidence, practicality, and risk as well as in how they handle light.

The comparison is not a head-to-head performance test. The mouse work shows a biological route to NIR sensitivity; it does not establish that an injection would be safer, clearer, cheaper, or more convenient than any particular device.

What remains unknown before human use?
The animal result answers a scientific question, not the clinical questions a treatment would have to answer. The cited sources do not establish human efficacy, regulatory approval, repeat-dose safety, or how long particles remain in the eye. They also do not establish long-term clearance or what repeated exposure might mean for retinal function.
A separate University of Eastern Finland report dated 30 September 2026 describes a different approach: graphitic-carbon-nitride nanoparticles injected into mice with retinitis pigmentosa. The particles accumulated near surviving retinal ganglion cells, produced measurable visual-cortex activity, and changed light-response behavior; the report also describes experiments with pig retinal tissue. That work concerns a retinal-prosthesis approach for disease-related blindness, not proof of human infrared night vision. The report says further long-term safety and functional work is needed before human testing.

Can you see infrared without goggles?
Mice in the 2019 experiment could detect NIR after receiving the particles. The study does not show that people can see infrared through an injection, and it does not establish a treatment people can request. If you need night vision now, external devices remain the practical option; the injectable approach is an experimental mouse result with important questions still open.
