Yes—but the eZ80 for RC is not a chip that plugs into the original Z80 socket. It is a CPU module designed for RC2014 and RCBus backplanes, and it needs compatible external ROM and RAM, an eZ80-configured RomWBW image, and a UART serial connection to a terminal. Its processor can run Z80 software, but that does not make every RC2014 peripheral compatible.
What the eZ80 changes—and what it does not
The eZ80 is an 8-bit processor with a 24-bit register set and ALU. Zilog describes two relevant operating modes: a Z80-compatible mode with a 64 KB address space, and a full 24-bit addressing mode. The manufacturer says Z80 and Z180 programs can execute with little or no modification; that is a statement about software, not a promise that existing hardware modules or applications will work unchanged. Zilog’s eZ80 CPU User Manual (UM007715-0415) also describes 16 MB linear addressing.
Zilog characterizes the eZ80 CPU as capable of executing code four times faster than a standard Z80 at the same clock speed. This is a manufacturer claim about the processor, not a measured benchmark of the RC2014 card. Actual system performance depends on the card’s configuration, memory and workload.

What you need to use the card
The card is intended for an RC2014 or RCBus backplane and relies on other modules to provide the computer’s memory and boot environment. Dino Boards’ eZ80 for RC product listing recommends a full 80-lane backplane and names the RC2014 512K RAM/ROM and Small Computer Central SC714 memory modules as tested options.

- Compatible backplane: an RC2014 or RCBus system with a suitable backplane; the maker recommends a full 80-lane backplane.
- External ROM and RAM: the CPU card is not a complete computer by itself. Consult the product listing for the maker’s stated tested memory modules.
- Configured firmware: use a RomWBW image built for the EZ80 STD target. The project repository documents the firmware setup.
- Serial terminal connection: connect through the eZ80 UART to communicate with the system.
The product listing describes a kit whose surface-mount components are already soldered. The builder still needs to solder the PCB pins and a standard six-pin programming header. The listing includes boards, capacitors, sockets, connectors and ICs, including a PLD with its logic flashed; it lists a 20 MHz crystal and an optional 25 MHz crystal for overclocking. Kit contents and board revision can change, so check the current listing before ordering. The 25 MHz option is not a guarantee of stable operation at that speed.
What the processor and card specifications mean
Keep the chip’s capabilities separate from the card’s operating configuration. Hackster.io’s 2024 project report identifies the selected processor as an eZ80F92 and reports up to 20 MHz, 128 KB of on-chip flash and 8 KB of RAM. Those figures describe the processor reported for the project; they do not replace the external memory requirements for the RC system.

The report also describes an early carrier/backplane adapter using an oscillator, 74HCT245 buffers and RC2014 bus headers. Its demonstration showed the module driving LEDs on a peripheral card. That development milestone is not evidence that every peripheral module has been validated.

The maker says a limited number of RC2014/RCBus expansion modules have been tested. In particular, SPI has no software support and has not been tested, while I2C support is limited. Treat compatibility as module-specific rather than assuming that an eZ80 can use everything supported by a conventional Z80 setup.

The project repository also describes Yellow MSX support in firmware dated 2025-06-20 or later. According to the project author, this interprets Z80 code rather than executing it cycle-accurately. The author reports testing a small number of cartridge games and notes that higher levels could still reveal issues. This is the author’s test account, not independent verification or a guarantee that all MSX software will work.

RC2014 is a modular homebrew Z80-computer platform, not a recreation of one specific vintage computer. The RC2014 platform overview describes a basic configuration with 8 KB ROM, 32 KB RAM, a 7.3728 MHz clock and 115,200-baud serial communication. Other configurations can add features such as pageable ROM, 64 KB RAM, CompactFlash, peripherals and CP/M capability. These are platform examples, not specifications guaranteed for every RC2014 build or for an eZ80 card installation.

The eZ80 card’s appeal is bringing a newer processor architecture into that modular bus environment while retaining a route to run Z80 software. The practical trade-off is that users must configure the surrounding memory and firmware, and check individual modules rather than treating the card as a universal upgrade.

Is it the right upgrade for your RC2014?
- It may suit you if you already have a compatible backplane, can provide suitable external memory, and are comfortable building the required RomWBW target and checking module support.
- It may not suit you if you expect a socket-level CPU swap, broad plug-and-play compatibility, or a guaranteed fourfold speed increase for your programs.
- Before buying or assembling, verify the current board revision and kit contents, confirm your memory and backplane arrangement, and check whether the peripherals you rely on are supported.
