Yes—the 2021 report described a flaw in AirTag Lost Mode that could redirect someone who scanned a tag to a phishing or other malicious website. The reported route used information in the tag owner’s custom contact field; the reports do not show that scanning alone silently compromised a phone. They also do not establish which software release fixed the issue or whether it remains present today.
How the reported AirTag vulnerability worked
Apple AirTag owners can enable Lost Mode and add contact details and a custom message. SecurityWeek reported that a person scanning the tag with an NFC-capable phone—including an Android phone—could see that information. MacRumors reported that researcher Bobby Rauch found that arbitrary code entered in the phone-number field could redirect the finder to a fake iCloud sign-in page or another malicious site.
The concern was a social-engineering trap: a finder might assume that signing in was necessary to contact the owner. MacRumors reported that the contact information could be viewed without logging in. The reports describe a redirect and potential credential theft or an attempted malware download, not silent device compromise simply from scanning. SecurityWeek’s report and MacRumors’ account provide the contemporaneous details.

What to do if an AirTag scan opens a login page
- Do not enter your Apple Account or iCloud password just to view an AirTag owner’s contact details.
- Leave the page if it asks for credentials or unexpected personal information. The reported scenario involved a deceptive page, so treat an unfamiliar sign-in prompt as suspicious.
- Do not download or open anything the page offers. The reports described an attempted malware-download risk, not proof that scanning itself installed malware.
What is known about Apple’s response—and what is not
MacRumors reported that Rauch contacted Apple on June 20, 2021, and that Apple said it intended to address the weakness in an upcoming update. That report did not give a release date or identify a fixing version.

The available reports do not verify the precise remediation version or the vulnerability’s present-day status; this is a historical vulnerability report, not evidence that current AirTags remain vulnerable.
