For step counts, heart-rate trends, basic workouts and sleep tracking, an affordable fitness band can be a better-value choice than an expensive smartwatch. A smartwatch is worth paying more for when you need independent GPS, richer phone-linked features or more detailed workout use. The right choice depends on what you will actually use—not the price alone.

What a fitness band can do well

Many budget bands cover the everyday jobs most people want: counting steps, recording heart rate, logging workouts and tracking sleep. A low price does not necessarily mean a short battery life or a bare-bones activity list. Which? found that the under-£50 trackers in its reviewed set averaged just shy of 10.5 days per charge, compared with around 9.5 days for pricier trackers. Those figures describe Which?’s set, not every product on the market. Which?’s tracker comparison also reported average heart-rate sensor differences of no more than 4% across resting, walking and higher-intensity training in its tests.

That makes a band a sensible fit if you mainly want convenient, at-a-glance activity tracking and do not need advanced smartwatch functions. However, those heart-rate findings do not establish that every budget band is equally accurate, and they do not mean every kind of workout or distance measurement will be equally well served.

Basic tracking versus precise distance

Steps and heart-rate readings can be useful for monitoring general activity. If your priority is precise distance or route tracking, GPS matters more. Which? notes that more expensive GPS-equipped devices can be useful for accurate distance tracking. A large number of workout modes is not, by itself, proof of better tracking or accuracy.

  • Long battery life: Google Fitbit Air’s battery lasts up to a week, and fast charging gets you one day of battery life in just five minutes[6,7]

Which? has also noted that most trackers in one year’s tested set offered often more than 150 activities. That is a scoped observation about its review set, not a specification that applies to trackers generally. Check whether the specific band supports the activities you do and whether it records the data you care about.

When GPS changes the choice

Some bands use the paired phone for location, while others have built-in GPS. With phone-dependent location tracking, you need to carry the phone for the band to use its location. Built-in GPS lets a device record location without relying on the phone; that distinction is especially relevant for outdoor running, walking or cycling when you want to leave your phone behind.

Battery claims need context

Manufacturer battery-life figures are estimates tied to particular modes and usage assumptions, not promises that every owner will reach the maximum. For example, Amazfit advertises the Band 7 for up to 18 days in regular typical use and up to 28 days in battery saver mode. The company also lists a 1.47-inch AMOLED display, 120 sports modes, 5 ATM water resistance and built-in Amazon Alexa. These are manufacturer specifications, not independent test results. Amazfit’s Band 7 specifications provide the stated figures.

Huawei lists its Band 7 for up to 14 days in typical use and 10 days in heavy use, with battery estimates based on usage scenarios described by Huawei. It also lists 96 workout modes, automatic heart-rate and SpO₂ monitoring, and 5 ATM water resistance. Huawei says the device is not a medical device and is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent disease. These are also manufacturer claims rather than independent measurements. See Huawei’s Canadian Band 7 specifications for its assumptions and product details.

Real-world results can fall short of a maximum. In a review, Tom’s Guide reviewer Nikita Achanta reported 13 days of use with the Xiaomi Smart Band 10 Pro, compared with Xiaomi’s up-to-21-day claim. That is one reviewer’s experience, not a controlled comparison with other bands or watches. Screen use, notifications and tracking settings can affect how long a wearable lasts. What a smartwatch adds

Smartwatches generally offer more phone-linked functions than fitness trackers. Depending on the model and paired phone, those may include responding to messages, handling calls, controlling music or making payments. Feature availability varies, so check the particular watch and phone combination instead of assuming every smartwatch supports every function. Which?’s coverage of budget trackers discusses the difference between tracker and smartwatch capabilities.

Those extras matter if you want to interact with your phone from your wrist. If you only want to see activity data and basic notifications, they may not justify the extra cost. Also check whether the watch’s GPS is built in if phone-free route tracking is important; a smartwatch label alone does not establish that a given model has every feature you want.

How to choose between a band and a watch

  1. List your must-haves. Decide whether you need steps, heart-rate trends, sleep tracking, workout records, phone-free GPS, calls, message replies, music controls or payments.
  2. Check GPS specifically. Look for “built-in GPS” if you want location tracking without carrying your phone. If the device depends on connected GPS, plan to bring the paired phone.
  3. Compare the exact models. Confirm supported activities, phone compatibility, smart features and water-resistance rating on the manufacturer’s product page. Similar names can refer to devices with different capabilities.
  4. Read battery figures with their mode attached. Distinguish typical-use estimates from battery-saver maxima, and consider whether your expected screen and tracking use resembles the stated scenario.
  5. Check current local price and availability. Prices and model availability vary by region and change over time; compare the devices you can actually buy where you live.

Who should buy which?

Choose a budget fitness band if

  • You want everyday activity, heart-rate and sleep tracking without paying for features you will not use.
  • You are comfortable carrying your phone when location tracking depends on it.
  • You value a simple wearable and long intervals between charges more than a broad set of phone-linked functions.

Pay more for a smartwatch if

  • You need built-in GPS for workouts without your phone.
  • You expect to respond to messages, handle calls, control music or make payments from your wrist, and the specific model supports those features with your phone.
  • You want capabilities beyond basic fitness tracking and have checked that the model includes them.
