Sometimes. 802.11b and 802.11g use 2.4 GHz, while 802.11n can use 2.4 GHz, 5 GHz, or both. So a device labeled “802.11 b/g/n” can connect to 5 GHz only if that particular model supports the band; the label alone does not confirm it.
What “802.11 b/g/n” tells you
The letters identify Wi-Fi standards supported by a device, not every frequency band its hardware can use. IEEE lists 802.11b and 802.11g for 2.4 GHz, and 802.11n for both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz. That makes 802.11n the relevant part of the label—but it does not mean every 802.11n device is dual-band.
IEEE gives 802.11g a maximum data rate of 54 Mbit/s. For 802.11n, IEEE describes a theoretical maximum of 600 Mbit/s with four spatial streams and a 40 MHz channel. How to check whether your device supports 5 GHz
- Find the exact model and hardware revision. Check the product label, system information, or the device’s original documentation.
- Open the manufacturer’s specifications for that model. Look for “5 GHz,” “dual-band,” or explicit 5 GHz frequency support. A specification that lists only 2.4 GHz means the device cannot join a 5 GHz network.
- Do not treat “802.11n” as proof of dual-band support. Confirm the band in the model-specific specifications; implementations vary.
If the device specification is unclear, search the exact model number and hardware revision in the manufacturer’s documentation rather than relying on the general b/g/n label.

What to do if a computer lacks 5 GHz
For some computers, a compatible dual-band USB Wi-Fi adapter can add 5 GHz capability. Check the adapter’s supported bands, the computer’s operating system, and driver availability before choosing one. Compatibility is not universal: an adapter must work with both the computer and its software. For example, the TP-Link Archer T4U specifications list 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz operation and support for 802.11ac/a/n/g/b; confirm the current hardware revision and operating-system support for your setup.
Why the standards label may not settle a connection problem
Even when a device supports 5 GHz, a failed connection can depend on the router’s band settings, regional channel availability, security configuration, or operating-system behavior. The standards label answers what the device may support; it does not by itself diagnose a particular connection failure.
