AI can forecast some features of Bitcoin markets in historical studies, but the evidence does not establish a generally reliable or profitable way to predict Bitcoin prices. The answer changes with the target—price, return, direction, or volatility—the forecast horizon, the data period, and the model it is compared with.
Can AI predict Bitcoin price?
Sometimes, in a limited and testable sense. A model can estimate a future price level, forecast a return over a set period, classify whether a market move will be up or down, or estimate how much prices may fluctuate. Those are different tasks, and success at one does not establish success at the others.
- Price level: an estimated future Bitcoin price. Error measures such as MAE or MSE compare estimated prices with observed prices.
- Return: the change in value over a specified period. A return forecast may be useful for studying expected movement without directly forecasting a particular price level.
- Direction: a classification such as up or down. Directional accuracy does not say how large a move will be.
- Volatility: an estimate of the size or variability of movements. It does not, by itself, indicate whether Bitcoin will rise or fall.
So “AI predicts Bitcoin” is too broad to be a meaningful accuracy claim unless the target and horizon are specified. The published studies below test particular tasks on historical data; they do not provide a current Bitcoin forecast.

| Study | Forecast target and data | Comparison and reported result | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| Berger and Koubová, Journal of Forecasting, first published 31 May 2024 | Bitcoin returns; the abstract summary does not state the sample dates. It discusses daily return forecasts. | Machine-learning techniques had better forecast precision than econometric time-series benchmarks for in-sample and out-of-sample forecasts in the authors’ setup. | The same study reports that deeper LSTM architectures did not improve daily forecast precision and identifies a simple recurrent neural network as a sensible daily-return choice. A broad ML advantage does not mean a deeper model wins. |
| Pratas, Ramos, and Rubio, Eurasian Economic Review, published 14 June 2023 | Bitcoin volatility; 2,753 observations from 8 September 2014 through 1 May 2022. | Compared ARCH/GARCH with MLP, RNN, and LSTM methods. The authors report deep-learning forecast-quality advantages and evaluate with MAPE, MAE, and Diebold–Mariano tests. | The authors note substantial computational costs. MLP and RNN forecasts were smoother but missed large spikes; LSTM reacted more strongly to those movements. |
| Huang, Sangiorgi, and Urquhart, Journal of International Financial Markets, Institutions and Money, volume 97, article 102064 (2024; early online 19 October) | Bitcoin volatility forecasts from one day to two months; the abstract summary does not state sample dates. | Compared LSTM and CNN-LSTM with GARCH and HAR approaches. The University of Birmingham record reports neural networks outperforming GARCH across the tested horizons, LSTM outperforming HAR, and an MTF-enhanced CNN-LSTM doing especially well in short-term forecasts, particularly at seven days. | This is a result from one study and does not establish that the MTF-enhanced model is universally best or that it predicts price direction. |
| Cheng and coauthors, Technological Forecasting and Social Change, January 2024 | Bitcoin price and Garman–Klass volatility, using daily data from 1 January 2017 through 30 October 2022. | Compared LSTM, SARIMA, and Facebook Prophet. The abstract reports the LSTM variant improving MSE and MAE against SARIMA and Prophet. | The authors describe Bitcoin as volatile, seasonal, and affected by external events and news. They report Prophet difficulty during the Russian-Ukrainian conflict period and parts of the COVID-19 era. |
| Kim and coauthors, Entropy, 2023 | Directional classification on daily data from 2 December 2014 through 8 July 2019. | An indexed result reports 66% accuracy for logistic regression, ahead of the tested linear SVM and random forest. | The figure is available here only from the indexed result, not the full article page. It is one historical classification result, not a general estimate of current Bitcoin forecast accuracy. |
What a Bitcoin volatility forecast can—and cannot—tell you
Volatility models estimate movement size or variability, not whether the next move will be positive. The studies by Pratas, Ramos, and Rubio and by Huang, Sangiorgi, and Urquhart examine volatility forecasting, so their reported comparisons should not be used as evidence that an AI model can reliably call Bitcoin’s direction.
The results also show why a single error score is not the whole story. A smoother forecast may perform acceptably in ordinary periods yet fail to reflect a sudden spike. A model that reacts more strongly to large moves may behave differently in quieter periods. The model’s usefulness depends partly on whether it handles the kinds of market conditions relevant to the question being asked.

Why the results do not establish a dependable Bitcoin prediction
Different targets and horizons produce different tests
A daily return forecast, a seven-day volatility forecast, and a price-level estimate are not interchangeable. Even when two papers use the same label for a model, different targets and forecast windows can produce different results. Compare like with like before treating one model as better.
Historical performance is conditional on the sample
The cited studies use historical data, and the stated samples end no later than 2022. Bitcoin’s volatile behavior, external events, and changes in market conditions can alter how patterns behave. A result on a past sample does not show that the same model would work in the market in 2026.

More complex does not automatically mean more accurate
The return study by Berger and Koubová reports that deeper LSTM architectures did not improve daily precision in its setup. The volatility study by Pratas and coauthors notes computational costs and missed spikes in some smoother MLP and RNN forecasts. Model complexity is a trade-off to evaluate, not proof of predictive power.
Forecast metrics are not trading returns
Forecast studies evaluate model outputs against observed data using measures such as MAE, MSE, MAPE, directional accuracy, or statistical comparison tests. Those measures do not establish what a user would earn after fees, slippage, execution constraints, or changes in market conditions. None of the findings above is a buy or sell recommendation.

How to assess a Bitcoin price prediction
Before relying on a published result or a model output, check whether it answers the particular question you care about:
Recommended Free Tools
- Identify the target: Is it predicting price level, return, direction, or volatility?
- Check the horizon: Is the forecast daily, weekly, or longer, and does that match the intended use?
- Read the data period: Note the dates and whether the sample includes turbulent conditions relevant to the claim.
- Inspect the benchmark: Find out whether the model is compared with a simple baseline, an econometric model, or another machine-learning method.
- Check the test design: Is the reported result in-sample, out-of-sample, or both? A strong in-sample fit alone is not evidence of performance on unseen data.
- Match the metric to the task: Price or return errors, directional accuracy, and volatility errors answer different questions.
- Look for large-move behavior: Determine whether the study discusses spikes or turbulent periods rather than only average error.
- Consider practical costs: Computational demands and the consequences of forecast errors matter alongside a reported metric.
A result is most informative when its target, horizon, sample, baseline, and evaluation method are all clear. If one of those is missing, treat the claim more cautiously rather than filling in the gap with a general accuracy assumption.
