Not by themselves. Food delivery apps can help pass an allergy request to a restaurant, but the available official documentation does not show that AI independently verifies ingredients, checks kitchen procedures, or prevents allergen cross-contact. For a serious food allergy, treat the app as a communication tool—not a safety guarantee—and confirm the restaurant can accommodate your specific need before ordering.

What an app can—and cannot—do

A dedicated allergy feature can make a request more visible and connect it to a particular menu item. That is useful, but it is not the same as confirming that a dish is safe. The documented Uber Eats workflow, for example, lets customers select allergens for an item and presents that request to the merchant. The merchant may say it cannot fulfill the request, and the customer can then modify or cancel the order. The documentation describes a handoff between customer and restaurant, not independent verification by AI. Uber Eats customer allergy instructions Uber’s merchant Allergy Requests FAQ

Recommendations, filters, menu labels, and automated routing can help you find options or relay information. None establishes what ingredients are currently in a dish, whether a substitution was made, or how the kitchen handled preparation. The available official sources do not establish that a delivery app’s AI validates those details or has been shown to reduce allergic reactions.

Why a restaurant’s preparation still matters

Leaving an allergen out of a recipe does not rule out cross-contact: the FDA defines it as the inadvertent introduction of a major food allergen into food. Shared utensils, surfaces, equipment, or preparation steps can matter, and a message in an app cannot confirm that they were controlled. FDA: Food Allergies

In the United States, the FDA recognizes nine major food allergens: milk, eggs, fish, Crustacean shellfish, tree nuts, peanuts, wheat, soybeans, and sesame. Sesame became the ninth under the FASTER Act, effective January 1, 2023. Federal packaged-food allergen labeling rules generally do not cover most unpackaged foods sold at retail or by food-service establishments, so restaurant orders often depend on the restaurant’s current ingredient and preparation information rather than a standardized package label. Restaurant findings are a reason to ask, not an app failure rate

The CDC reports that about one in three people with food allergies say they have had a reaction in a restaurant. In research summarized on the CDC’s 2024 page, more than half of interviewed restaurant staff had never been trained on food allergies, and most restaurants in the study lacked separate areas and equipment for allergen-free preparation and cooking. These findings concern restaurant practices in the referenced studies; they are not a delivery-app reaction rate or a current census of every restaurant. CDC: Food Allergy Reactions

How to use an app’s allergy feature

Uber Eats’ published instructions illustrate one platform’s workflow. Labels and availability can vary by market, restaurant participation, and app version; check the current interface rather than assuming every service offers the same controls. Uber Eats customer allergy instructions

  1. Find a possible option. Use a dietary filter, if available, to narrow the menu. Treat the results as options to investigate, not confirmation that a particular dish is safe.
  2. Attach the request to the item. In the documented Uber Eats flow, select the menu item, open its Allergy Requests section, choose the relevant allergen, and apply the request to that item.
  3. Check the cart before checkout. Confirm the request appears with the correct item. Uber’s help page advises against putting allergy instructions in the generic Special Instructions field; use the dedicated allergy control when it is offered.
  4. Contact the restaurant directly. Ask whether it can accommodate your specific allergy, including cross-contact concerns, and raise any questions about ingredients or preparation. Uber’s customer guidance also recommends calling the restaurant.
  5. Respond to a refusal or uncertainty. Uber says the merchant must notify the customer if it cannot fulfill the request. Its help page says the customer has ten minutes to respond before automatic cancellation. If the restaurant cannot give a clear answer, do not treat order acceptance as evidence that the dish is safe.

Uber’s merchant guidance says restaurants can enable Allergy Requests, see selected allergens highlighted on the order card and receipt, and review requests before accepting. Merchants are expected to fulfill requests according to their food-safety practices or tell the customer they cannot; an allergy-friendly program has a similar stated expectation. These are platform procedures, not proof that every participating order is prepared safely. Uber merchant Allergy Requests FAQ Uber Allergy-friendly restaurant program FAQ

Allergy versus dietary restriction

A dietary preference or restriction and a food allergy are not interchangeable. A preference may be about choosing or avoiding an ingredient; an allergy can make exposure a medical safety issue. Make the distinction clear when communicating with the restaurant, and describe the specific ingredient or allergen rather than relying only on a broad label such as “dairy-free” or “gluten-free.” For a diagnosed allergy, a filter or menu description should not replace direct confirmation about ingredients and preparation.

For context, the FDA and partner agencies describe allergen control as one element of best practices for third-party food delivery. That guidance addresses delivery-related food-safety practices; it is not an AI validation standard or a certification of any individual app, restaurant, or dish. FDA: Best Practices for Food Safety on Online Delivery Services

When should you choose another restaurant?

Do not proceed with an item if the restaurant cannot confidently address your specific allergy or explain whether it can manage the relevant cross-contact risk. A refusal is useful information, not a problem to work around by adding more notes or relying on a filter. Choose another restaurant or skip the item if you cannot get a clear answer. The available evidence does not determine whether any particular restaurant can safely prepare food for a particular person; that requires current, restaurant-specific information.

For a serious allergy, follow your clinician-provided care plan. Do not base a medical decision solely on an app’s AI label, menu description, restaurant badge, or successful order acceptance.
