There is no reliable evidence that affiliate links themselves improve AI search visibility. Google’s published guidance says its AI features use the same foundational SEO practices as Search, with no special optimization or schema required. Some AI-cited editorial pages do contain affiliate links, but that observed association does not show the links caused those pages to be selected. To assess your own visibility, track Google’s reporting over time, check indexing and snippet eligibility, and treat third-party AI monitoring as sampled observation—not access to Google’s internal systems.
What Google says about affiliate links and AI visibility
Google does not identify affiliate links as a ranking factor or an AI-citation signal in the guidance covered here. Its current AI features guidance says there are no additional requirements or special optimizations for appearing in AI Overviews or AI Mode. A page must be indexed and eligible to appear with a Search snippet to be eligible as a supporting link, but eligibility does not guarantee that Google will show it.
That means affiliate links are not a shortcut around the ordinary requirements for discoverable, useful pages. Google recommends making pages crawlable and easy to find through internal links, providing important information in text, maintaining a good page experience, and keeping structured data consistent with visible content. It does not require special schema or new AI-specific machine-readable files for these features. Its people-first content guidance also emphasizes usefulness, reliability, and trust.
Why affiliate links still need careful handling
Affiliate links are paid links, so they should be qualified for search engines and disclosed to readers. Google’s link best practices recommend using rel="sponsored" or rel="nofollow" for paid links, and using concise, descriptive anchor text that accurately sets expectations. Google has warned that improperly qualified affiliate links may lead to manual or algorithmic actions; that is a link-quality and compliance issue, not evidence that qualified links improve AI inclusion.
For US audiences, the Federal Trade Commission says commission relationships should be disclosed clearly and conspicuously so readers can evaluate an endorsement. Place the disclosure near the recommendation or link. The FTC gives “I get commissions for purchases made through links in this post” as an example and cautions that “affiliate link” alone may not make clear that the publisher is paid. See the FTC’s Endorsement Guides FAQ.

What the available studies do—and do not—show
One 2026 Glass Digital study found affiliate links on 87.7% of editorial pages retrieved by AI assistants—420 of 479 commercially classifiable editorial-page retrievals. The researchers analyzed roughly 1,270 AI answers across ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, and Gemini, using 25 prompts in each of three UK retail categories—kitchenware, automotive parts, and designer furniture—run daily from August 26–28, 2026. This is a description of the pages in that sample, not a comparison of otherwise equivalent pages with and without affiliate links. It cannot establish that affiliate links caused retrieval. Read the study’s methods and findings with those category and time limits in mind.
A separate 2026 preprint by Haofei Xu, Umar Iqbal, and Jacob M. Montgomery analyzed 55,393 trending queries across 19 categories during March 13–April 21, 2026. It reports that 13.7% of queries in that sample returned an AI Overview and that some cited domains were absent from the co-displayed first-page results. This suggests AI Overview source selection can differ from standard visible rankings; it does not test affiliate links. The activation rate is specific to that query sample and observation window, not a universal current rate. See the preprint.

Neither study demonstrates that adding affiliate links increases AI visibility. Pages with affiliate links may also differ in content, reputation, topic, technical accessibility, or other characteristics that affect whether an assistant cites them.

Use a repeatable baseline rather than relying on a single prompt or screenshot. For Google, start with Search Console’s Generative AI performance reporting when available, and compare page performance over time. Google’s AI features documentation explains eligibility, while its generative AI optimization guidance describes measurement and cautions that outside vendors do not have access to Google’s internal ranking or AI systems.
- Check eligibility first. Confirm that the page is indexed and eligible for a Search snippet. Review crawl access, internal links, and whether key information is present in text.
- Set a stable query and page list. Record the queries that matter and the pages intended to answer them. Keep AI Overviews, AI Mode, and other assistants as separate surfaces.
- Record consistent context. For each observation, note platform or feature, date, country, device, query, and cited page. AI answers and linked pages can vary between runs.
- Use first-party data for Google where available. Track Search Console’s Google reporting alongside ordinary Search performance and page-level indexing status.
- Treat other monitoring as sampled evidence. For third-party tools, ask which surfaces, geographies, dates, and queries they cover; whether runs are repeatable; whether they report page citations or only brand mentions; and how they obtain their data. Their results are observations, not privileged Google metrics.
If you want to test whether affiliate links themselves matter, a more informative design would compare matched pages or controlled changes while keeping content, technical access, topic, and query set stable, then measure outcomes across enough time and searches. A simple before-and-after is not proof if other page or site changes happened at the same time.
