Yes. You can play podcast episodes saved in different audio formats in one YouTube livestream, provided your playback software can decode each file and your encoder sends YouTube an audio codec supported by the chosen ingest protocol. The episode files’ formats and the livestream’s outgoing audio format are separate things.

How different episode formats work in one livestream

Your encoder reads each episode file, plays its audio into the stream mix, and sends a single outgoing stream to YouTube. The files do not all have to use the same format. What matters is that the playback software can decode each one and that the outgoing audio meets YouTube’s requirements for your ingest route.

OBS documents MP3, AAC, OGG, and WAV among the audio types supported by its media sources, including playlist playback. That is a useful guide for common files, not a guarantee that every codec profile or file will work. Test unusual files in the encoder you plan to use. OBS Project: Media Sources

Set the outgoing audio for YouTube

YouTube’s published encoder guidance lists AAC or MP3 audio for RTMP/RTMPS ingestion. For standard stereo audio, YouTube recommends a 44.1 kHz sample rate and a 128 Kbps bitrate. These settings describe what you send to YouTube; they do not require every source episode to have been encoded that way. YouTube Help: Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions

Prepare and test a playlist in OBS

  1. Add episode files: In OBS, add a Media Source for an episode or use its playlist behavior to arrange multiple episodes. OBS documents MP3, AAC, OGG, and WAV support for audio media sources. Check that every item in the playlist is present and plays.
  2. Confirm audio routing: Play each source and check the OBS audio mixer. Make sure its audio reaches the stream mix and that levels are audible without clipping. If the source plays but the mixer shows no signal, check the source’s audio settings and routing.
  3. Choose the ingest and output settings: In the encoder, select the route you intend to use and an outgoing codec listed for it by YouTube. For RTMP/RTMPS stereo, use 44.1 kHz and 128 Kbps as YouTube’s recommended starting point.
  4. Test the full sequence: Run a private or unlisted test that includes different episode formats, playlist changes, and transitions. YouTube recommends testing with audio and movement similar to the planned stream and monitoring stream health during the event.
  5. Watch for failures: Confirm the live preview has sound after each change. A successful first episode does not prove that every other file or codec profile will decode correctly.

YouTube’s encoder settings guidance covers platform recommendations, while the OBS documentation covers media-source playback. Neither guarantees that every source encoding or every third-party encoder will handle every file. Test any less common file before relying on it live. OBS Project: Media Sources

Do not confuse RSS podcast delivery with a livestream

YouTube podcast RSS ingestion and an encoder-based livestream are different workflows. YouTube describes a podcast as a playlist of videos. With RSS ingestion, YouTube creates separate episode videos from selected feed episodes, typically using the show’s art as a static image; new feed episodes can upload automatically. RSS availability is limited to selected countries or regions. It does not create a continuous livestream from the feed. SABRENT USB External Stereo Sound Card Adapter, Plug & Play (AU-MMSA)
  • PLUG IN AND HEAR SOUND IN SECONDS - USB Type-A connector with a 3.5mm stereo headphone output and a separate 3.5mm mono microphone input. No drivers, no software, no external power - the adapter is USB bus-powered and is recognized as a standard USB audio device.
  • WORKS ON WINDOWS, MAC AND LINUX - Driverless on Windows 98SE/ME/2000/XP/Server 2003/Vista/7/8, Linux and Mac OSX, and compliant with the USB Audio Device Class 1.0 specification, so any system that supports class-compliant USB audio will see it. Select it as the sound output and input device after plugging it in.
  • TWO JACKS, TWO JOBS - The green jack is stereo OUT for headphones or powered speakers; the pink jack is mono microphone IN for a 3.5mm mic. It does NOT support 4-pole headsets on a single combo plug, it does NOT power passive speakers, and it does NOT add surround sound - it is a stereo 2-channel adapter.
  • FOR LAPTOPS AND DESKTOPS THAT NEED AN AUDIO PORT BACK - Adds a headphone and mic port to a laptop, desktop, or mini PC whose onboard jack has failed or was never there. Managed and work-issued computers can block new USB audio devices by policy - check with your IT department before ordering for a company machine.
  • SABRENT SUPPORT AND WARRANTY - What is in the box: one USB audio sound adapter. Backed by a 1-year limited warranty, extended to 2 years when you register within 90 days on the manufacturer's website.

If an RSS-delivered episode’s audio needs correction after publication, YouTube’s guidance says to upload the new file from the RSS feed. This creates a new video and makes the old one private; it is separate from how an encoder handles episode formats during a livestream. YouTube Help: Deliver podcasts using an RSS feed

Troubleshoot format and playback problems

  • An episode will not play: The file or its encoding may not be supported by the selected playback software. Test the file in OBS or another encoder before the broadcast; the documented list of common OBS media-source types is not a promise that every codec profile works.
  • The file plays locally, but the livestream is silent: Check that the source’s audio appears in the encoder’s mixer and is routed to the stream output.
  • Audio disappears at an episode change: Test the playlist transition and the first moments of each file. Confirm the next source starts and reaches the stream mix.
  • The outgoing stream reports an audio issue: Verify that the selected outgoing codec matches the YouTube ingest route—RTMP/RTMPS or HLS—and check the sample rate and bitrate against YouTube’s guidance.
  • Viewer interaction feels delayed: If you chose HLS, account for its higher latency than RTMP.
