It can create account risk if you use a VPN to make a platform think you are in another country and claim an offer restricted to that region. But the official policies cited here do not say that simply having a VPN connected automatically gets you banned for claiming any free game.
Why the kind of VPN use matters
Three situations are easy to confuse: using a VPN for ordinary internet connectivity, using one to disguise your location, and using that disguised location to claim a region-restricted offer. The policy risk is clearest in the last two cases. An active VPN connection alone does not establish that a free-game claim violates a platform rule.
Offers can vary by region, and account-country rules may govern what a user can access or claim. Check that the offer is available where you actually live, and use the platform’s official storefront. Do not use a VPN to evade regional eligibility or account-country requirements.
What the major platform policies say
| Platform and scope | Location rule | Stated consequences or qualifications |
|---|---|---|
| Steam: region-restricted Steam Gift redemption | Steam Support says disguising your location with a proxy or VPN to redeem a region-restricted gift is against the Steam Terms of Service. | Steam says this may result in account restrictions. It also says a warning may appear if the attempted redemption conflicts with the user’s past Steam activity. Steam Support: Region Restrictions on Steam |
| Epic Games: account country and country changes | Epic says an account’s country can affect game availability and should match the country where the user currently resides. Its country-change instructions require active VPN or hosting services to be disabled. Epic Games: How account country affects games Epic Games: How to change account country | Epic says redeeming free games counts as purchases in the context of its account-country change process; that statement is specific to that process, not a general rule for all claims. |
| PlayStation: US terms | The US terms require users to select their country or region of residence when creating an account. They do not specifically address claiming free games through a VPN. PlayStation Terms of Service (US) PSN Terms of Service | PlayStation (US) | The terms say a breach may lead to temporary or permanent suspension of an account or console, and loss of or restricted access to associated content. |
What “could be banned” means in practice
Platforms can document serious sanctions without making those sanctions automatic for every suspected violation. Epic’s Terms of Service, effective September 10, 2026, list possible consequences including warnings, temporary or permanent bans on certain features or products, account suspension, and permanent termination for repeat or serious offenses. They do not say that merely having a VPN active while claiming an unrestricted free game automatically triggers a ban. Epic Games Terms of Service

Steam’s warning is narrower: it addresses using a VPN or proxy to disguise location when redeeming a region-restricted Steam Gift, and says account restrictions may result. Neither policy establishes a ban rate for VPN-assisted free-game claims, so a precise likelihood cannot be stated from these sources.
What to do before claiming a free game
- Confirm the promotion is available in your actual country or region.
- Use the country where you reside for account-country information, following the platform’s current instructions.
- Do not use a VPN to bypass regional restrictions or eligibility rules.
- If a storefront warns that your location conflicts with account activity, stop and check the platform’s official support guidance rather than trying to work around the restriction.
If your account is restricted
Read the platform’s notice to determine whether it concerns a particular game or service, a feature, or the whole account. Epic distinguishes product bans, which can remove access to a specific game or service, from account bans, which disable the Epic account. If you believe an Epic sanction was mistaken, use its official sanctions and appeals process. Epic Games: Sanctions and Appeals
