A used computer or component may be subject to an anti-cheat hardware restriction that affects its next user, but the rules depend on the game and enforcement provider. There is no single industry-wide ban system—and the claim that buyers have no way to check at all is too broad: Activision documents a Call of Duty status check performed on the device, while Riot warns against testing suspected banned hardware by logging in.

Can a used CPU or computer carry a ban from its previous owner?

It can be a risk with some services, but “hardware ban” does not mean the same thing everywhere. Riot describes HWID bans as applying to physical components of a computer; Activision says Call of Duty hardware bans apply to a device. These policies can affect someone who did not receive the original penalty.

That does not establish that a CPU by itself is always identified or banned. Riot’s guidance discusses a computer’s components, and its technical explanation describes a TPM endorsement key as a hardware identity in a specific scenario. The available policies do not establish a universal CPU-serial-number system or prove that changing a CPU clears a restriction. Riot’s HWID-ban guidance and its Vanguard technical article should be read in that context.

Can you check before buying?

There is no universal pre-purchase registry or remote lookup documented in these policies. Activision does publish a check for Call of Duty, but it requires access to the device: sign in to a crossplay Call of Duty title on that device with an account in good standing. If the device is hardware-banned, Activision says a status notification will appear. This checks the device under Activision’s policy; it does not certify the CPU for other games or anti-cheat systems. See the Call of Duty Security and Enforcement Policy (Australia-region page, dated 2026-07-31).

Riot’s advice is importantly different: if you suspect a computer has an HWID ban, do not log in with any account. Riot says another account used on HWID-banned hardware may be restricted on that device and banned for a set period. A test login is therefore not a safe general-purpose inspection method. See Riot’s guidance (page dated 2026-05-31).

How ban scope and duration differ

These examples are provider-specific, not a universal definition of hardware enforcement.

Provider or system What the official policy says Duration or review Buyer-status guidance
BattlEye Its support page describes global bans, not a CPU-only ban. Global bans are permanent; exceptions will not be made. An appeal requires the exact global-ban ID and the game. BattlEye says it will not disclose ban details or evidence. BattlEye Support
Riot HWID bans Applies to physical components of a computer; another account used on affected hardware may be restricted on-device. Another account may receive a ban for a set period. Some HWID bans may be lifted after re-evaluation, but this is not guaranteed. Riot advises against logging in if the computer is suspected of having an HWID ban. Riot Support
Call of Duty / Activision Hardware bans apply to the device and may affect access across Call of Duty titles. Length varies; a hardware ban may be cleared or applied again. The documented status notification appears after an account in good standing logs into a crossplay title on the device. Hardware bans are not appealable under this policy. Activision Support
Valve Anti-Cheat (VAC) VAC bans apply to the relevant game’s VAC-secured servers. Valve says hardware configurations do not trigger VAC bans. VAC bans are permanent and non-negotiable. This describes VAC specifically; it does not rule out other sanctions by Valve or a game developer. Steam Support

How to reduce the risk when buying

  1. Identify the game and provider that matter to you. Check that provider’s current official enforcement policy; one service’s status tells you nothing definitive about another.
  2. Ask the seller about the system’s history. Request relevant details and agree on a return window. These are ordinary buyer protections, not proof or certification that the hardware is unbanned.
  3. Do not use a Riot account to test a computer you suspect is HWID-banned. Riot warns that an account logging in on affected hardware can itself be restricted and receive a time-limited ban.
  4. For Call of Duty, understand the conditions of the published check. It requires using the device and an account in good standing in a crossplay title; it is not a pre-purchase remote lookup or an all-games clearance.
  5. Do not treat a component swap or reinstall as a guaranteed fix. Riot says reinstalling a game or deleting the responsible account does not remove an HWID ban. Its TPM/CPU discussion is specific context, not evidence that replacing a CPU will reliably remove a ban.

What to do if the device is restricted

Use the enforcement provider’s own support route rather than relying on seller assurances or unofficial “ban-check” claims. Riot allows re-evaluation requests in some cases; BattlEye requires the exact global-ban ID for an appeal and says it will not disclose its evidence; Activision’s cited policy says hardware bans are not appealable. Those differences are why the game and provider must be identified before deciding what recourse exists.
