Yes. A TV aerial can lose performance as it corrodes, moves or suffers damage, but a broken-up picture or “no signal” message does not prove the aerial itself has failed. Cables, connectors, amplifiers, the television or set-top box, interference and changing reception conditions can cause similar symptoms. Start with safe checks indoors; if the problem persists or the fault may be on the roof, ask an aerial installer to inspect the system and measure the signal.
What can fail in a TV aerial system?
The aerial is only one part of the path that carries a terrestrial TV signal to your screen. A fault can occur at the aerial, its mounting, the cable running to the home, a connector or wall socket, a splitter or amplifier, or the TV or set-top box. Similar symptoms can also come from interference or reception conditions rather than damaged equipment.
Ofcom says exposure to the elements can cause corrosion that affects aerial performance over time, particularly in coastal locations. Its 2015 advice says an aerial more than ten years old may need replacing and notes that in coastal areas its lifespan may be less than ten years. These are conditional guidelines, not a guaranteed service life or proof that an older aerial has failed. Ofcom’s wideband aerial guidance
Aerial, mounting and weather exposure
Corrosion can reduce performance, while loose or corroded fixings and wind damage can affect the aerial’s position or condition. Wind-related problems are one possibility when reception changes in windy weather, but timing alone cannot confirm that the aerial has moved. Do not climb onto a roof, chimney or ladder to check or realign it.

Cable, connectors and other equipment
A damaged cable may no longer carry the signal effectively; Freeview advises replacing a damaged aerial cable. Loose connections, a faulty splitter or amplifier, and problems with the TV or box can also interrupt reception. Freeview’s guidance on existing cables
Why is my TV signal breaking up or missing?
Picture break-up, missing channels and a sudden loss of signal are symptoms, not a diagnosis. Look for patterns, but treat them as clues: the same symptom can have more than one cause.

Reception worsens during or after heavy rain
If reception deteriorates during heavy rain and remains poor after it has passed, water may have entered the aerial or the cable running down from it. Sony presents this as a possible explanation, not a certain diagnosis. Persistent problems after rain merit an installer’s inspection. Sony’s TV reception support guidance

Reception changes in wind
Movement, loose fixings or wind damage may be involved, but a weather-linked fault alone does not establish that the aerial has shifted. If the problem continues, have the installation checked rather than attempting roof-level inspection yourself.

Only one TV is affected
If other televisions in the home work normally, the affected set, its box or its particular cable path are possibilities. If several sets are affected, a shared part of the aerial system or a wider reception issue may be involved. Neither pattern proves a specific cause. A local transmitter or reception issue may also affect nearby homes. The London Borough of Merton’s reception guidance
The problem is intermittent or channel-specific
Reception conditions, interference or a component in the signal path can cause intermittent or selective problems. Note which channels are affected and when the fault occurs. An amplifier is not an automatic remedy: some amplifiers installed before digital switchover may no longer be needed. Freeview’s advice on avoiding equipment interference

What can I check safely before calling an installer?
- Compare other TVs. Check whether the fault affects one set or several. This helps narrow the possibilities but does not identify the failed part by itself.
- Check the indoor connections. Make sure the aerial lead is firmly connected to the TV or box and the wall socket. If reception disappeared suddenly, restart the TV or box.
- Bypass extra equipment. If practical, connect the aerial lead directly to the TV, temporarily bypassing a splitter or other equipment. Try a known-good cable of the same type if one is available.
- Check the TV’s signal information. If the TV or box provides signal information, note the readings alongside the affected channels and whether the issue is intermittent or weather-linked. A signal-strength reading alone does not conclusively diagnose the fault.
- Look from the ground only. You can note an obvious change, such as a visibly displaced aerial or damaged cable, without climbing. Leave roof, chimney and ladder inspections or adjustments to a qualified installer.
If indoor checks do not resolve the problem, or you suspect water ingress or a loose aerial, ask an installer to inspect the system and measure signal levels. Measurement can help locate a persistent fault; a symptom or a single TV reading cannot reliably distinguish every cause. Ofcom’s correspondence on TV reception and aerial-system deterioration

Replacement can make sense when inspection shows that the aerial is corroded, damaged or otherwise unsuitable, but a new aerial is not a guaranteed fix for every reception problem. The cable, connectors, mounting, amplifier, splitter or receiving equipment may instead need attention.

Ofcom recommends that most consumers replacing an aerial because of unreliable reception choose a wideband aerial. Whether that category is suitable for a particular home still depends on local reception and the existing installation. If you are comparing quotes or replacement options, check that the proposed work considers:
- the receiving location and relevant transmitter needs;
- the aerial’s type or band, condition and exposure to weather;
- cable and connector condition, mounting and alignment; and
- whether the work includes signal measurement and checks of the full system.
The available guidance does not establish a universal best aerial model, a fixed installation cost or a single repair-versus-replacement threshold. Ofcom’s separate aerial survey found that, among surveyed households with an outdoor aerial in use and excluding households where aerial type was uncertain, 6% had a loose cable and 94% had a secure cable. Those figures describe the survey sample in 2014, not current UK prevalence. Ofcom’s 2014 Consumer aerial survey
