No identified Premier League club has been shown to have the means—or an agreement—to sign Erling Haaland if he leaves Manchester City. The headline is a report claim, not a confirmed transfer or a demonstrated affordability calculation. As of 3 October 2026, Haaland is still reported as a City player, and current speculation points to Barcelona rather than establishing a Premier League buyer.
Which Premier League club could afford Haaland?
The report behind the headline does not identify a Premier League club whose finances prove it could sign Haaland. The original article behind the exact affordability claim was not identified in the reviewed coverage, so there is no supported basis here for naming a “surprise” side or presenting its ability to pay as fact.
FourFourTwo reported on 30 September 2026 that Haaland might not stay at City amid developments in the club’s financial case. Its article attributed the “said yes” Barcelona framing to other outlets and repeated a Football Insider description of a possible forced-relegation scenario. That chain of reporting does not establish an agreement with Barcelona or confirm that Haaland must leave. FourFourTwo’s report is about speculation, not evidence that a Premier League side can fund a deal.

City and Haaland remain linked in current reporting. The Independent described his contract as running until 2034 in a 27 September 2026 article; it said he had almost eight seasons left on the nine-and-a-half-year deal signed in January 2025. That remaining-term description is time-sensitive. The Independent’s report does not reveal a transfer price or prove a prospective buyer could meet City’s terms.

What would “afford Haaland” actually require?
A club’s ability to make a headline-grabbing bid is not the same as being able to complete a transfer. A credible affordability assessment would need evidence for each of these elements:
- Sale price: a reliable estimate or negotiated fee, neither of which is established in the reviewed reports.
- Player costs: wages, bonuses and the length of any new contract. The reports reviewed do not establish Haaland’s demands for a move.
- Club funding and registration rules: the buyer’s financial position and the rules that apply to it. No club-specific accounts or assessment are provided for the unnamed side.
- Consent: agreement from Manchester City and Haaland. Neither a forced departure nor a completed transfer is confirmed in the reporting reviewed.
Without those figures and agreements, “can afford” cannot be verified by comparing a club’s reputation or resources with the player’s prominence.

Does Haaland have a release or relegation clause?
The available reports do not publish Haaland’s contract. In June 2026, Manchester City denied a Real Madrid presidential candidate’s claim about a release clause. City’s statement, quoted by BBC Sport, said: “The stories which have emerged from Spain regarding the future of Erling Haaland are untrue. There is no chance of this happening and there is no contractual clause to enable it.” The denial addressed that particular claim; it is not the contract itself. BBC Sport reported the statement on 4 June 2026.
TEAMtalk reported on 26 September 2026 that unnamed City sources denied Haaland had either a release clause or a relegation clause. That is reporting attributed to unnamed sources, not independently published contract documentation. TEAMtalk’s account should be read with that qualification.

Does City’s financial case mean Haaland has to leave?
No. The financial case is context for the speculation, not proof of a forced departure. The Associated Press reported that an independent panel found City broke Premier League financial rules and that the club can appeal. AP described the panel as finding that sham commercial contracts disguised more than £830 million in funding from the Abu Dhabi ownership between 2009 and 2018. That historical figure concerns the panel finding; it is not a transfer budget, a player valuation or money available to a buyer. Read AP’s report on the panel verdict and appeal.
The Premier League’s published summer 2026 transfer roundup does not establish that Haaland moved to another Premier League club. The league’s transfer news page provides no confirmation of the headline’s proposed signing.
