Yes, electrostatic discharge can damage susceptible electronics, but the available sources do not establish that an ordinary household static shock commonly damages an intact conventional speaker driver. The risk depends on the particular parts involved. The bigger practical concern is handling exposed electronics during service; electrostatic speakers also have a separate internal arcing risk during operation.
Can static damage a conventional speaker?
It is possible for an electrostatic discharge (ESD) event to damage susceptible electronic components. Whether damage occurs depends on a device’s ability to dissipate the discharge energy or withstand the voltage involved, according to the EOS/ESD Association’s ESD fundamentals. That general guidance does not establish a typical failure rate or a static-damage threshold for conventional speaker drivers.
A speaker may also contain electronic assemblies, whose susceptibility can differ from that of its driver. ESD damage may be immediately apparent or latent, meaning a component could fail later; this is a general electronics risk, not proof that a speaker was damaged by a particular shock. Check the manufacturer’s or supplier’s information and relevant component datasheets for susceptibility details. The Association notes that its fundamentals series primarily addresses manufacturing and assembly in ESD-controlled environments.

Does touching a speaker or getting shocked mean it is damaged?
No. A shock and a speaker problem occurring at roughly the same time do not establish that the shock caused the problem. The sources do not provide a speaker-specific diagnostic test or threshold for household static. If sound changes, use the manufacturer’s troubleshooting guidance or seek qualified service rather than assuming the driver was damaged by ESD.

How electrostatic speakers are different
An electrostatic speaker uses a charged diaphragm and stators as part of its operating design. MartinLogan explains that arcing between the diaphragm and stator can seriously damage the speaker and the amplifier driving it. This is an internal high-voltage operating fault, not evidence that an everyday shock from a person has the same effect.
MartinLogan’s support FAQ, updated August 24, 2018, says its research department punctured hundreds of holes in a diaphragm without affecting sound quality or causing it to rip; the FAQ says replacement of the electrostatic transducer is the solution if that physical puncture occurs. Those statements address puncture damage, not static, and do not establish replacement-part availability for every model. Consult the manufacturer or an authorized service provider for model-specific diagnosis and repair.

When to use ESD precautions
Routine listening and touching an intact speaker enclosure do not, on the evidence available, justify treating every speaker like an exposed circuit board. ESD precautions become relevant when service exposes susceptible electronic parts.

- Check manufacturer or supplier guidance and component datasheets for sensitivity information, including any human-body-model (HBM) or charged-device-model (CDM) ratings.
- When handling exposed susceptible parts, use appropriate controls such as grounding, dissipative materials, and personnel grounding with a wrist strap or a suitable flooring-and-footwear system, as described in the EOS/ESD Association’s basic control procedures.
- For an electrostatic speaker, avoid attempting internal repair without model-specific service guidance because its operating system involves high voltage.
These are electronics-service practices, not a requirement to wear a wrist strap while using or cleaning an intact speaker.
Quick Recap

What to do if a speaker behaves differently after a shock
- Check the symptom without opening the cabinet. Confirm the connection and source using the speaker maker’s normal troubleshooting instructions.
- Do not infer the cause from timing alone. The available sources give no speaker-specific test that can distinguish ESD damage from another fault.
- Contact model-specific support or qualified service if the problem persists. This is especially important for an electrostatic speaker, where internal high-voltage circuitry and possible diaphragm-to-stator arcing are distinct concerns.
