A pH-responsive polymer nanoprobe made tumors fluoresce more brightly in mouse experiments reported in 2013. The result suggests a way to highlight some cancers during near-infrared imaging, but it does not establish that the probe can diagnose cancer in people or is available for clinical use.
How the polymer probe is designed to work
The probe uses copolymers designed to dissociate below pH 6.9. Infrared fluorophores embedded in the polymer are comparatively dim while held in its structure; when the structure breaks apart, the released fluorophores emit a brighter signal under near-infrared imaging.
The design aims to use differences in acidity between blood and some solid tumors. A 2013 Chemistry World report gave blood pH as 7.4 and typical tumor pH as 6.5–6.8. These are values cited in that report, not fixed readings for every patient or tumor.

In the reported research, fluorescence under tumor conditions was more than 100 times brighter than under blood conditions. That is a contrast measurement described in the study account, not a clinical measure of how accurately the probe finds cancer.

What the mouse experiments showed
The report described tests in mice with various tumors, which researchers visualized using near-infrared fluorescence imaging. In one lung-tumor model, they reported detecting cancerous nodules as small as 1 mm³. This is a result from that specific animal model, not a demonstrated detection threshold in people.
The researchers reported no obvious signs of toxicity in the mice, including weight loss or a decline in kidney function. They also said they intended to investigate potential toxicity more deeply. Those observations do not establish safety in humans.

What the findings do—and do not—say about treatment monitoring
The probe’s signal responds to acidity, so a change in fluorescence could reflect a change in tissue conditions; it does not, by itself, prove that cancer cells have died. In the 2013 report, surgical oncologist Gooitzen van Dam cautioned: “However, he points out that a return to normal pH in cancer tissue does not always indicate cell death, which might be a problem for clinical treatment monitoring.”

Has the probe been tested in people or become available?
The experiments described by Chemistry World were in mice. Its 11 December 2013 report said the team was trying to move the technology toward clinical use and quoted Jinming Gao saying, “I think it’s industrialisable,” while describing efforts to work with companies interested in negotiating a university licence. Those statements describe intentions at the time, not proof of later human trials, a licence, regulatory clearance, or a commercial product.
The report identifies the underlying work as Y. Wang et al., published in Nature Materials in 2013 (DOI: 10.1038/nmat3819). The findings and figures here are attributed to the news report’s account of that study; current clinical, regulatory, licensing, and commercial status are not established by it.
