No. A phone thermal camera shows infrared radiation from surfaces; it does not reveal the interior of a wall, the other side of ordinary window glass, or a person beneath clothing. Heat from something hidden may sometimes change a visible surface’s temperature, but that is an indirect clue—not a see-through image.

What a phone thermal camera actually shows

A thermal camera measures infrared radiation and represents differences in surface temperature as colors or shades. Those colors are not a photograph of what is inside or behind an object. As Teledyne FLIR explains, “If you point a thermal camera at a wall, it will detect heat from the wall, not what’s behind it.”

Connecting a thermal imager to a phone does not change this principle. Phone-compatible thermal cameras are available, but they are imaging attachments, not X-ray devices. FLIR says its FLIR ONE cameras “are thermal imaging cameras, not X-ray devices” and that they “allow you to visualize and measure the surface temperature of most objects.” (FLIR ONE privacy FAQ)

Can a phone thermal camera see through a wall?

No. It reads the wall’s surface. A pipe, stud, damp area, or other condition behind the wall may transfer heat or change how the wall loses heat, creating a temperature pattern that the camera can show. Whether a pattern appears depends on factors such as the temperature difference, how long the condition has been present, the wall’s materials, and its construction.

Flir One - Thermal Imaging Camera for iOS Smartphones (iPhone 15 and Newer w/USB-C), 240x180 Super Resolution (80x60 Native IR)
  • COMPATIBILITY: Infrared camera plugs directly into phone charging port and connects with iphones with USB-C (iphone 15 and newer)
  • SUPER RESOLUTION: Vivid IR technology upscales the image to 240x180 from 80x60 for greater detail and clarity. Flir MSX technology merges thermal and visual images to enhance details in real time.
  • THERMAL INSPECTION GUIDES: Within the Flir One app is a step-by-step inspection guide to help you address typical faults easily and perform accurate home inspections. Find air leaks, moisture buildup, and more
  • ACCURACY: Measures temperature within ±3°C or ±5% when the unit is within 15 °C – 35 °C and the scene is within 5 °C – 120 °C
  • JOBSITE TOUGH: Built to take the abuse that working on a jobsite dishes out every day, rated to take a drop from 1.5 meters and is built to last

That pattern is indirect evidence, not proof of exactly what is behind the wall. A thermal image alone cannot confirm that a visible warm or cool area is a pipe, stud, leak, or other specific object. FLIR’s explanation of thermal imaging and walls describes the same surface-temperature limitation.

Can it see through ordinary glass?

No. Ordinary window glass blocks the long-wave infrared radiation used by typical thermal imagers. The camera generally registers the glass’s surface temperature and thermal energy reflected from its surroundings, rather than a thermal image of what is beyond the pane. This can make a window behave more like a reflective surface than a transparent one in a thermal image. (FLIR on glass and thermal reflections)

Compact and lightweight, it measures 2.32×1.06×0.68 inches (59×27×17.2mm) and weighs only 0.62oz (17g), making it easy to carry in a shirt pocket. The package includes the P1 thermal camera, a zipper case, a 50cm extension cable, and a quick start guide.

Specialized infrared-transmitting windows are different from household glass. FLIR’s guidance discusses specially designed germanium infrared windows, which are optical components intended for infrared equipment—not ordinary window panes. (FLIR guidance on protective windows)

Can it see through clothing?

No. The camera shows the temperature pattern on the clothing’s surface, not a see-through image of the wearer. Body heat may affect the fabric’s surface temperature, but that remains surface information. A thermal camera should not be treated as a way to view a person beneath clothing. Why can thermal images seem to reveal hidden features?

Heat moves through materials. If something behind a surface is warmer or cooler than its surroundings, that difference may eventually affect the surface enough to produce a pattern. The camera detects that surface pattern; it does not see through the material or identify the cause on its own. The same principle applies to clothing: heat can influence fabric temperature without making the fabric transparent to the camera.

Some materials can transmit certain infrared wavelengths under particular conditions, but that does not make thermal imaging a general see-through technology. FLIR describes an edge case involving a very thin plastic sheet and notes that thicker plastic blocks infrared. That exception does not apply to ordinary walls, household glass, or clothing. (FLIR’s discussion of materials and infrared)

What a phone thermal camera is useful for

A phone thermal camera can help visualize surface-temperature differences for inspection tasks. It may help locate areas worth investigating, but the image by itself does not establish what is behind a wall or beneath a covering. If you are considering a smartphone thermal camera attachment, check the manufacturer’s current compatibility and specifications for your specific phone and region. Buying one will not enable you to see through walls, ordinary windows, or clothing.
