For most people, the reviewed evidence does not show that carrying a phone in a left shirt pocket affects the heart’s natural rhythm. The important exception is if you have a pacemaker, implantable cardioverter-defibrillator (ICD), or another implanted cardiac device: keep the phone at least six inches (15 centimeters) from it and do not carry the phone in a pocket over the implant.
What matters: a natural heartbeat or an implanted device?
Warnings about phones near the chest in guidance from the FDA and the American Heart Association (AHA) address possible interference with pacemakers and ICDs. They do not establish that a phone disrupts the natural heartbeat of someone without an implanted cardiac device. No direct test of the exact left-shirt-pocket scenario in people without implants is cited in those sources, so the careful conclusion is that the reviewed evidence does not show an effect—not that an effect is impossible.
For people with an implant, proximity is the practical concern. Some consumer electronics contain magnets that can trigger a device’s magnet mode, and phone transmissions can pose a small interference risk. The FDA says the risk from magnets is low and that it knew of no associated adverse events at the time of its guidance; that does not remove the recommendation to maintain distance.
If you have a pacemaker or ICD, keep the phone away from the implant
Both FDA and AHA guidance recommends keeping phones at least six inches (15 centimeters) from an implanted cardiac device and avoiding a pocket directly over it. The AHA describes transmission-related risk as very small for ICDs and even smaller for pacemakers. Follow the instructions for your particular device and your clinician or device clinic’s advice if they differ.

- Carry the phone in a bag, trouser pocket, or belt holster if that helps keep it away from the chest implant. These are practical placement options, not accessories endorsed or tested by the FDA or AHA.
- When using the phone, hold it to the ear opposite the implant to increase separation, as the AHA advises.
- If you have symptoms or questions about your specific implant, contact your clinician or device clinic rather than relying on general phone guidance.
Why magnets and radio transmissions are separate concerns
Magnets can affect some implanted devices at close range
A sufficiently strong magnet may activate magnet mode in certain implanted devices. The FDA says its testing confirmed this can happen with some newer consumer electronics. This is a close-proximity issue, which is why avoiding a phone directly over the implant and keeping the recommended separation are useful precautions.
Phone radio-frequency exposure is a different question
The FDA says the weight of scientific evidence has not linked cell-phone radio-frequency radiation with health problems. Its six-inch advice for phones and watches concerns possible interference with implanted devices; it should not be read as evidence that ordinary phone radio emissions alter the natural heartbeat.

What the iPhone 12 study does—and does not—show
An AHA report dated June 2, 2021, described a test in which an iPhone 12 Pro Max caused interference in 11 of 14 evaluated pacemakers and ICDs when held directly over or near them. That is a result from a small, specific close-proximity test—not an estimate of the chance of interference during everyday phone use, and not a result that can be generalized to every phone or implant.
Mark A. Estes, M.D., professor of medicine and director of the Clinical Cardiac Electrophysiology Fellowship Program at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine, said in the AHA report: “The American Heart Association and the manufacturers of pacemakers and implantable cardioverter defibrillators have long recommended that magnets be kept away from these implanted devices.”
