A new experimental approach called NIR-PAT² uses near-infrared light and a target-binding antibody conjugate to attack Porphyromonas gingivalis, a bacterium associated with gum disease. In cell experiments and a mouse model, researchers reported selective bacterial killing, less bone resorption, and a shift in the oral microbiome toward a healthier profile. It has not been shown to work in people, and the findings do not prove that every beneficial bacterium is spared.
What is NIR-PAT²?
Near-Infrared Photo-Antibacterial Targeting Therapy, abbreviated NIR-PAT², combines an antibody-photosensitizer conjugate called IgY-IR700 with near-infrared light. The conjugate is designed to bind to P. gingivalis; light activates the treatment at the target. The goal is to focus antibacterial effects on a disease-associated organism rather than broadly suppressing oral microbes.
The researchers compared its binding and bactericidal mechanism with antimicrobial photodynamic therapy in laboratory experiments. In the tested setup, they reported killing P. gingivalis without affecting human cells, and lower release of lipopolysaccharide—a bacterial component that can contribute to inflammation—than with the comparator. These results describe the experimental conditions, not a guarantee of safety or selectivity in patients. The study appeared in the Journal of Translational Medicine on 2 June 2026.
What did the researchers find in mice?
The team tested NIR-PAT² in a ligature-induced mouse model of periodontitis and measured alveolar bone resorption and oral microbial composition. At day 14, measured bone resorption was 0.93 ± 0.018 mm in the periodontitis group and 0.77 ± 0.085 mm in the NIR-PAT² group; the difference was statistically significant (p < 0.001). The sham group measured 0.77 ± 0.082 mm. These are mouse-model measurements, not estimates of benefit in people.

- High-Quality Materials: Both the dental scaler and pick in this kit are made from soft steel, ensuring safe and effective cleaning without causing any damage to tooth enamel. After use, simply rinse the tools with warm water and allow them to air dry.
The researchers also reported a shift in microbiome composition toward a health-associated profile, including partial restoration of commensal genera such as Streptococcus. That supports a cautious description: the treatment showed selective effects and partial restoration in the studied models. It does not establish that all beneficial oral bacteria remain untouched, or that the same microbiome changes would occur in humans.
Has NIR-PAT² been tested in people or is it available?
The reported evidence is from laboratory experiments and mice, not a human clinical trial. The article discusses possible future clinical application, but the cited sources do not establish that human trials have begun or are scheduled, nor that the treatment has regulatory clearance or is available to patients. The findings are promising preclinical work, not proof of a patient treatment.

How does it compare with other microbiome-related gum research?
Other recent studies address different treatments and populations. They offer context about microbiome-oriented approaches but do not test or validate NIR-PAT².
| Approach | What was studied | Evidence and population |
|---|---|---|
| NIR-PAT² | IgY-IR700 plus near-infrared light, designed to target P. gingivalis | Laboratory experiments and a ligature-induced mouse periodontitis model; no human trial established in the cited sources. Maruyama et al., 2026. |
| Heat-inactivated postbiotic gummies | Gummies containing heat-inactivated Lactiplantibacillus pentosus ONRICb0240 | A double-blind randomized trial enrolled 116 adults with gingival inflammation but no periodontitis. Participants took gummies or placebo twice daily for six weeks while maintaining their usual oral-hygiene routines. The report found lower gingival index in the treatment group and reduced bleeding on probing in a sensitivity analysis. This is human evidence for a separate intervention, not NIR-PAT². Liu et al., 2026. |
| Antibiotic timing alongside mechanical periodontal treatment | Compared when antibiotics were introduced as part of periodontal treatment | Harvard School of Dental Medicine reported that both strategies produced clinical improvements; patients who began antibiotics at treatment start had faster and more sustained shifts toward a healthier oral microbiome. This is a distinct clinical strategy, not evidence for NIR-PAT². Harvard School of Dental Medicine, 23 March 2026. |
Does this replace deep cleaning or antibiotics?
No. The NIR-PAT² study does not establish that it replaces mechanical periodontal treatment, antibiotics, or other standard care. Do not delay or change dental treatment based on a preclinical study; ask a dental professional about care for your specific condition.
