No study cited here shows that a hot bath by itself lowers blood pressure more than a 30-minute workout. The study behind that comparison tested hot-water immersion after exercise against cooler immersion after the same exercise. Other studies found mixed results, so the evidence does not show that baths can replace exercise, medication, or clinician-directed hypertension care.
What the headline’s study actually compared
A 2025 study in The Journal of Physiology enrolled physically inactive middle-aged adults. Participants completed 30 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic exercise, then immersed themselves in either 40°C water or 34°C thermoneutral water. They did this, on average, three times a week for eight weeks. The comparison was therefore exercise plus hot immersion versus the same exercise plus thermoneutral immersion—not a bath versus a workout. Read the study.
The hot-water group had greater reductions in diastolic and mean arterial pressure, and improved brachial artery flow-mediated dilation, a measure of blood-vessel function. The researchers did not find additional improvements in cardiorespiratory fitness, glucose, lipids, or inflammatory markers from adding hot immersion. These results suggest a possible added effect of heat after exercise in this group and protocol; they do not establish that bathing alone has the same effect.
What other blood-pressure studies found
Short-term immersion in people taking hypertension medication
A 2025 randomized crossover study involved 16 people with hypertension who were taking at least one antihypertensive medication. Participants completed separate sessions: 20 minutes in 40°C water, 40 minutes in 40°C water, 40 minutes in 36.5°C water, and seated control. Compared with control, reported 24-hour systolic blood pressure was 7 mm Hg lower after the 40-minute hot-water session and 6 mm Hg lower after both the 20-minute hot-water session and the 40-minute thermoneutral session. This was an acute result in a small, selected group, not evidence that immersion replaces treatment. Read the study.

Heat therapy versus exercise in untreated hypertension
A separate 2025 randomized clinical trial tested 30 supervised sessions of heat therapy or aerobic exercise in adults with untreated hypertension. It reported no blood-pressure effect from either intervention; the available study record does not give a numeric between-group estimate. This finding is a reminder that passive heat has not shown a reliable blood-pressure effect across populations and protocols. Read the study.
How to interpret the findings
These studies answer different questions. One tested repeated hot immersion after exercise in physically inactive adults and measured diastolic and mean arterial pressure. Another tested single immersion sessions in people taking medication and reported 24-hour systolic pressure. The third compared repeated heat therapy and exercise in untreated hypertension and reported no effect on blood pressure. Their results cannot be combined into a single claim that a bath lowers blood pressure more than exercise.

- Adjustable Arm Cuff: The arm cuff range from 8.7 - 15.7 inches (22-40 cm) fits your size, ensuring a comfortable and secure fit for most adults
In particular, the studies do not establish a bath-alone comparison with a 30-minute workout, a lasting benefit from regular bathing, or a replacement for prescribed medication or clinician-directed care. Anyone managing high blood pressure should follow their clinician’s advice rather than changing treatment based on these findings.
