Yes. Under the NHL 2025–26 and IIHF 2025/26 rules reviewed, a goalie may leave the crease to play a live puck. The key restriction is behind the net: playing the puck outside the competition’s designated area can result in a minor penalty. That answers whether the play is legal under those rules—not whether a particular chase is physically safe.
What does “safely” mean here?
Leaving the crease alone is not prohibited by the NHL or IIHF puck-handling rules cited below. A goalie can come out to play a live puck, but must follow the rules for the competition in which the game is being played. Rule permission does not make a play physically safe; whether to chase a puck depends on the situation and the goalie’s judgment.
Where can a goalie play the puck behind the net?
Both rulebooks reviewed define a designated area behind the net. The boundary matters when the puck is behind the goal line; playing it outside that area can lead to a minor penalty for delay of game.
NHL: 2025–26
NHL Official Rules Rule 27.8 says, “A goalkeeper shall not play the puck outside of the designated area behind the net.” The rule defines the area using lines that start six feet from either goalpost and extend to points twenty-eight feet apart at the end boards. Playing the puck outside the designated area behind the goal line draws a minor penalty for delay of game. Read the NHL 2025–26 rulebook.

IIHF: 2025/26
IIHF Official Rule Book Rule 27.7 likewise says, “A goalkeeper shall not play the puck outside of the designated area behind the net.” It states that the minor penalty will not be assessed when the goalie plays the puck while maintaining skate contact with the goal crease. Read the IIHF 2025/26 rulebook.
Which rulebook applies?
Do not assume these provisions apply unchanged in every league or age group. The NHL rule cited is from its 2025–26 book; the IIHF text cited is from its 2025/26 book. The IIHF says it uses the same rules for its events and championships and that the latest posted version is the one to use. Its rules page lists a 2026/27 book, but the relevant clause in that edition has not been verified here. Check the IIHF rules page.

The current USA Hockey wording was not verified, and NHL and IIHF rules should not be treated as a substitute for the rulebook governing a USA Hockey, college, youth, or recreational game. Check that competition’s current rules before relying on a penalty description.
Does the goal line count as part of the restricted area?
An IIHF 2023/24 situation example says the goal line itself is not part of the restricted area. Because that example is from an older edition, treat it as interpretive context rather than a definitive statement of the current rule; confirm the boundary in the rulebook for the season being played. See the IIHF 2023/24 situation example.
