No—not by detecting you entering the room. Google documents room-entry wake as a feature of a compatible television’s built-in presence sensor and Ambient Display. The Google TV Streamer can control a TV through HDMI-CEC, and some televisions can power on when you cast to the Streamer, but those actions are not the Streamer sensing that someone walked in.

To get automatic room-entry wake, your TV must support presence sensing. To get power, input, casting, or voice control from the Streamer, you need a compatible TV with HDMI-CEC enabled and the Streamer powered even while the television is off.

What the Google TV Streamer actually detects

The Google TV Streamer is a streaming and HDMI-control device. Google does not document a room-level motion or presence sensor in the Streamer that watches for someone entering the television room. Its HDMI connection can send power and input commands, but those commands need another trigger, such as casting, a voice request, or a device event.

Google assigns the specific “turn on when someone enters” behavior to Ambient Display on televisions equipped with their own presence sensor. In Google’s description, Ambient Display can turn on the screen when a person enters the room or is detected nearby. The sensing hardware is therefore in the TV, not in the Google TV Streamer.

This distinction matters when you are choosing equipment or diagnosing a setup. A Streamer connected to a television without a presence sensor cannot add that capability through software, a different HDMI cable, or an HDMI-CEC setting.

Option 1: use the TV’s Ambient Display presence sensor

What you need

  • A television model with a built-in presence sensor that supports Ambient Display.
  • Ambient Display enabled in the TV’s settings.
  • A clear enough view for the sensor and movement within its effective range.
  • Wake-distance, quiet-hours, and nighttime settings configured so they do not suppress the wake event.

Google’s help documentation does not provide a universal list of compatible TV models. Manufacturers can use different names for presence hardware and menu items, so verify the exact model’s current specifications and on-screen settings before buying it for this purpose.

How to enable and adjust it

  1. Open the TV’s settings and locate Ambient Display or the television’s equivalent presence-sensing menu. Menu paths and names vary by brand, model, firmware, and region.
  2. Turn Ambient Display on. A sensor option may need to be enabled separately from the general Ambient Display feature.
  3. Set the wake distance or detection distance. Use a distance that covers the normal entrance and seating area without extending unnecessarily into adjacent spaces.
  4. Review quiet hours. Google’s cited instructions show quiet hours enabled by default from 10 p.m. to 7 a.m.; your TV may use different defaults or labels.
  5. Check nighttime mode. Google says this mode prevents the TV from turning on in darkness. It can also increase standby power consumption, so disable it only if automatic nighttime wake is more important than that trade-off.
  6. Stand or walk through the intended approach while the TV is in standby to confirm that the screen wakes. Test at different times if you use quiet hours or nighttime mode.

Why presence wake can miss you or wake unexpectedly

Presence sensing is not a guaranteed room-occupancy detector. Google warns that radar-based sensing can react to moving objects, including fans, pets, curtains, and vacuums. It can also detect movement behind walls or windows, which may create unwanted wake events if the sensor faces a hallway or another room.

Placement and geometry are equally important. Furniture, decorative objects, a wall edge, or an incorrectly aimed sensor can block the useful field of view. Small movements or a person standing too far away may not register. Google gives up to 16 feet as a possible detection limit, while cautioning that the actual range varies by television brand and model. Treat that figure as a model-dependent maximum, not a guaranteed radius.

  • The Google TV Streamer (4K) delivers your favorite entertainment quickly, easily, and personalized to you[1,2]

  • Up to 4K HDR with Dolby Vision delivers captivating, true-to-life detail[4]; and you can connect speakers that support Dolby Atmos for more immersive 3D sound

If the television wakes when nobody is entering, reduce the wake distance, redirect the TV or sensor if the design allows it, move nearby moving objects, or enable quiet hours. If it does not wake, test from closer positions, remove obstructions, and confirm that the TV is not in nighttime mode.

Option 2: use HDMI-CEC control from the Streamer

What CEC can do

HDMI-CEC is a control protocol that lets compatible devices send commands over HDMI. With CEC enabled, a Google TV Streamer may switch the television to the Streamer’s HDMI input, and some televisions may power on when someone starts casting to the Streamer. A linked speaker or display can also issue voice commands for TV power when the television and HDMI chain meet Google’s compatibility requirements.

These are event-based controls. Casting, a voice command, or another supported device action starts the sequence. CEC does not know that a person crossed the doorway, and enabling it does not create presence sensing.

CEC requirements

  • The television must support HDMI-CEC, and CEC must be turned on. Manufacturers often give CEC a brand-specific name.
  • The Google TV Streamer must remain powered from a wall outlet or another power source while the TV is off. If it is powered from the television’s USB port, the TV may cut power in standby, leaving the Streamer unable to receive a cast request or send a wake command.
  • For voice control, you need a compatible TV with CEC enabled, a linked Google speaker or display, and a Streamer that remains powered.
  • Soundbars, AV receivers, and other HDMI devices may also need their own CEC settings enabled.

CEC can be disabled at the factory, and different manufacturers expose different combinations of power, input, and one-touch-play settings. Enable the TV’s CEC function and any separate option that controls automatic input switching or device power.

Why the HDMI chain matters

A direct connection is usually the clearest way to test CEC. Google notes that placing a receiver or soundbar between the streaming device and television can delay startup or make one-touch power and input switching unreliable. The intermediate device may need to wake first, select the correct input, and forward the CEC command.

For troubleshooting, connect the Google TV Streamer directly to the TV, enable CEC on both devices, and test casting or a power command. If that works, reconnect the receiver or soundbar and enable its CEC controls one device at a time. Repeated power commands can also temporarily stop responding, so wait briefly between attempts instead of rapidly pressing the power button.

Ambient Display versus Streamer/CEC

Approach Trigger Requirements Main limitation
TV Ambient Display Presence detected near the television TV with a presence sensor; Ambient Display enabled; suitable distance, placement, and wake settings Range, obstacles, small movements, pets or objects, quiet hours, and nighttime mode can affect detection
Streamer with HDMI-CEC Casting, a supported voice command, or another device-control event CEC-capable TV with CEC enabled; Streamer on independent power; compatible HDMI chain It controls power and input but does not establish that the Streamer detects room entry

If your requirement is specifically “the screen turns on as I walk into the room,” select a TV whose specifications explicitly include presence sensing and Ambient Display. If your requirement is “the TV turns on when I start watching from my phone,” CEC and casting may be sufficient even without a presence sensor.

Practical setup checklist

  1. Confirm the TV capability. Look up the exact model’s current manual or specifications for a presence sensor and Ambient Display. Do not assume that every TV running Google TV has this hardware.
  2. Configure Ambient Display for room entry. Enable the feature, set an appropriate wake distance, and review quiet-hours and nighttime-mode behavior.
  3. Install the Streamer on external power. Use the supplied power arrangement or another wall-powered source rather than relying on a TV USB port that shuts down in standby.
  4. Connect HDMI. Use a suitable HDMI input. Google lists an Ultra High Speed HDMI 2.1 certified cable as sold separately for Google TV Streamer setup; that cable supports the connection but does not add presence sensing.
  5. Enable CEC everywhere it is needed. Turn it on in the TV, the Streamer’s device-control settings, and any receiver or soundbar in the path. The label may differ by manufacturer.
  6. Test each trigger separately. First test a cast request, then a voice power command if you use one, and finally the TV’s presence wake. Separating tests shows whether a failure is in sensing, CEC, casting, or the HDMI chain.

Troubleshooting when the TV does not wake

The TV does not wake when you enter

  • Verify that the TV, not merely the Streamer, has a presence sensor and that Ambient Display is enabled.
  • Move into the sensor’s field of view and test closer than the stated maximum. Google cites up to 16 feet as a possible limit, with model-specific variation.
  • Remove or relocate obstructions and moving objects that can block or confuse radar sensing.
  • Check wake distance, quiet hours, and nighttime mode. A scheduled quiet period or darkness setting can intentionally suppress wake.
  • Confirm that the TV is actually in standby rather than fully powered off at a switched outlet.

The TV does not wake when casting

  • Make sure the Streamer is powered independently and remains online while the TV is off.
  • Enable CEC on the TV and verify that the Streamer is connected to the intended HDMI input.
  • Try another HDMI port and update the TV and Streamer firmware.
  • Disconnect the receiver or soundbar temporarily and connect the Streamer directly to the TV. If direct connection works, inspect CEC settings and firmware on the intermediate device.
  • Allow a short delay after sending a command. Google notes that repeated power commands can briefly stop working.

Voice commands work inconsistently

Voice power control depends on the same CEC path, plus a linked Google speaker or display and a Streamer that stays powered. Check CEC on the TV and every intervening audio device, then repeat the direct-to-TV test. A voice command cannot substitute for a TV presence sensor; it is still an explicit command rather than automatic room-entry detection.

Which solution fits your goal?

Choose Ambient Display when you want automatic entry-based wake

This is the only documented route in this setup that responds to someone being detected near the TV. It requires buying or already owning a compatible presence-sensing television and accepting that environmental conditions, schedules, and sensor limits affect reliability.

Choose CEC and casting when you want device-triggered wake

CEC is useful when your viewing action begins with a phone cast, a supported voice request, or another HDMI-control event. It can also switch the TV to the correct input. It cannot infer room entry, so a person walking in without casting or issuing a command will not necessarily turn the TV on.

Use both when you want flexibility

A presence-sensing TV can handle entry-based wake through Ambient Display while the Streamer handles streaming, input selection, casting, and voice control through CEC. Configure and test the two systems independently so that a CEC fault does not lead you to misdiagnose the TV’s presence sensor, or vice versa.
