A Craigslist ad can test whether a particular audience takes a particular step after seeing a particular offer. A reply or signup is useful evidence of interest, but it does not by itself prove that customers will pay, return, or support a sustainable business. The title describes one founder’s interpretation; without the ad, audience, responses, costs, or later outcome, there is no basis to claim what that experiment showed in practice. The useful question is what the test measured—and what to validate next.

What does a Craigslist ad actually test?

It tests a small chain of assumptions: whether the people who saw the ad were potential customers, whether the wording made the offer compelling, and whether the requested action was easy enough to take. The result is evidence about that offer in that channel under those conditions—not a verdict on the business as a whole.

Interpret the response by separating levels of intent. Views and clicks show exposure or curiosity. A reply, booked conversation, or waitlist signup is a stronger signal because it requires more effort. A payment or paid pilot is a stronger indication of willingness to pay, though even that does not establish repeat demand or workable economics.

  • Audience: Did respondents match the intended customer, or were they simply Craigslist users reacting to an unusual post?
  • Promise: What specific outcome or solution did the ad describe? Different wording can test different propositions.
  • Requested action: Was the next step a click, reply, appointment, signup, or purchase?
  • Meaningful response: What counted as success, and were respondents’ needs and intent confirmed in follow-up?

There is no universal conversion cutoff that makes an ad a pass or fail. The Startup Project’s validation guide recommends judging a smoke test against noise in the channel and confirming intent through follow-up conversations, rather than treating a raw response count as proof. What the reaction cannot establish

Interest is not the same as a validated business. An ad response alone cannot show that enough customers can be reached repeatedly, that they will pay the proposed price, or that the product or service can be delivered at a cost that leaves a viable margin.

The Startup Project guide separates validation into different questions and suggests a distinct experiment for each. These are practical recommendations, not results from a controlled study or universal thresholds:

Question Useful next experiment What it can help establish
Is this a real problem for the intended customer? Conduct 15–20 problem interviews, the guide’s suggested experiment. Whether the problem is recurring, important, and described in the customer’s own terms.
Is there demand for the proposed solution? Run a smoke test that clearly describes the intended solution and asks for an action, such as joining a waitlist or booking a demo. Whether the offer earns meaningful interest in the chosen channel; compare performance with channel noise and confirm intent in follow-up.
Will people pay? Test presales or paid pilots. Whether customers will commit money under the offer and terms tested.
Can the business deliver sustainably? Serve early customers manually and track delivery costs. What the work takes to deliver and whether the economics appear workable.

The 15–20 interview figure is the guide’s recommendation, not a proven success threshold. Likewise, a positive smoke test is a reason to investigate further, not a substitute for payment and delivery tests.

How to run a more informative smoke test

  1. Define the claim and audience. State which customer and problem the offer is meant for. Avoid changing the audience and proposition together if you want to understand what prompted a response.
  2. Describe the offer accurately. Explain the intended benefit and the product’s actual status. Do not imply that something is available now if it is only an idea or planned product.
  3. Ask for one observable action. A waitlist signup, demo booking, or reply makes the test more interpretable than vague interest. Choose an action that matches the question you are trying to answer.
  4. Record the funnel. Track exposure where available, clicks, replies or signups, and how many respondents fit the intended customer profile. Do not treat impressions as equivalent to qualified intent.
  5. Follow up. Ask respondents about the problem, what they understood the offer to be, and what would make them act. This can distinguish genuine need from curiosity about the ad.
  6. Choose the next test based on the remaining uncertainty. If the problem is unclear, interview. If demand is uncertain, test a clear offer. If willingness to pay is uncertain, try a paid pilot or presale. If delivery cost is uncertain, serve customers manually and track the work.

When a planned product is advertised, disclose that clearly

Calling an ad “fake” does not make a misleading offer acceptable. If the product is only planned and is not yet available, the Federal Trade Commission says the advertisement must clearly disclose that it may never ship. Its Advertising FAQs: A Guide for Small Business explains that “dry testing” means advertising a product to gauge interest before manufacturing it, and cites an FTC advisory opinion requiring disclosure that the merchandise is only planned and may never be shipped.

A compliant concept test should not invent scarcity, misrepresent who is posting or an affiliation, imply immediate availability, or gather personal information without an appropriate purpose. Whether a particular post violates a rule depends on its wording and context; these policy summaries are not a guarantee that Craigslist will permit a given experiment.

Choose a test that answers the next question

Craigslist may be a poor fit if its audience does not resemble the intended customers or its rules do not allow the proposed post. Compare alternatives by whether they reach the target segment, what action they can measure, whether they test interest or payment, the time and cost involved, and how clearly they can disclose that a product is still planned.
