Yes. A desktop can run on battery power through a UPS or a portable power station with AC outlets, provided the unit can supply the computer and its connected equipment. A UPS is usually intended to keep a desktop running briefly so you can save work and shut down; a power station may offer a larger or mobile reserve. Neither guarantees a standard runtime: the result depends on your system’s actual power draw and the battery unit’s output and capacity.
Does a desktop have a built-in battery?
Most desktop computers do not have a battery that can power the whole system. The small battery on a desktop motherboard preserves settings such as the system clock when the computer is unplugged; it does not run the PC. To keep a desktop operating during an outage, connect it to an external battery-backed AC source.
A UPS sits between the wall outlet and your equipment. When utility power fails, it switches to battery power; depending on the model, it can also provide surge protection or voltage regulation. A portable power station can supply AC from its internal battery, but whether it automatically bridges an outage depends on the specific model.

UPS or portable power station: which fits your goal?
| Consideration | UPS | Portable power station |
|---|---|---|
| Typical role | Automatically bridge a power outage so you can keep working briefly, save files, and shut down. | Provide AC from a larger or mobile battery reserve. |
| What to check | Watt output, VA rating, total connected load, waveform compatibility, and the manufacturer’s runtime data. | Continuous AC output, stored energy in Wh, usable energy after inverter losses, and total system load. |
| Outage switching | Designed to switch when utility power fails; transfer and waveform behavior vary by model. | Some models advertise UPS or pass-through operation, but switching specifications are model-specific. |
| How to estimate runtime | Use the manufacturer’s runtime curve or a load-specific product figure. | Compare usable Wh with the complete system’s actual power draw; account for inverter losses. |
Schneider Electric’s UPS buying guide describes common home and office models as 650–1500 VA, with typical backup of 5–20 minutes depending on load and model. These are broad guide figures, not a runtime promise for a particular desktop. Eaton likewise describes desktop UPS backup as enough time to save work or shut down. Schneider Electric’s UPS buying guide and Eaton’s desktop UPS buying guide explain the relevant sizing considerations.
#1 Best Overall
- KEEP YOUR COMPUTER, WI-FI AND ROUTER RUNNING THROUGH POWER OUTAGES: Supplies short-term battery power during outages to maintain internet connectivity and allow safe shutdown of computer during power interruptions
- POWER PROBLEMS DON'T ONLY HAPPEN DURING STORMS: 23 minutes of runtime (at 100W load) guards against outages, while surge protection shields connected devices from unexpected power events that happen even on a normal day
- PROTECT EVERYTHING ON YOUR DESK: 5 well-spaced outlets with full battery backup and surge protection, plus 2 surge-only outlets for less critical gear
- PHONE CHARGER: Keep your phone charged even when the power's out. The built-in 1.5A USB port works during outages
- EASY BATTERY REPLACEMENT KEEPS COSTS LOW: Swap the internal battery in minutes when it ages out, no need to replace the whole unit (APC replacement battery APCRBC154, sold separately)
How to size backup power for your desktop
- Decide what the backup must do. Choose whether you need brief ride-through for saving and shutdown, longer work during an outage, or AC power away from a wall outlet.
- Measure the complete setup’s load. Include the desktop and every device you intend to keep powered, such as a monitor and router. If possible, use the observed draw during your real workload rather than relying only on the maximum wattage printed on the computer’s power supply.
- Check the unit’s watt output. For a UPS, compare the total load with its watt capacity; do not treat its VA rating as equivalent to watts. Schneider Electric recommends output watt capacity 20–25% above the load, while Eaton recommends a 20% capacity margin. Leave headroom rather than choosing a unit whose output barely matches your measured load.
- Check energy capacity against the desired duration. For a UPS, consult the manufacturer’s runtime curve at a load close to yours. For a power station, compare continuous AC output with the load and its Wh capacity with the time you want; usable energy is lower than the headline battery capacity because of inverter losses.
- Confirm compatibility and connections. Check the unit’s waveform and transfer specifications, and confirm that its outlets and voltage suit your equipment and region.
Why watts, VA, and watt-hours matter
These ratings describe different limits. Watts measure real power delivered to the connected equipment. VA is a separate apparent-power rating commonly shown for UPS models; it should not be read as the unit’s watt capacity. Watt-hours (Wh) describe stored energy, which helps estimate how long a power station might supply a load. A unit can have ample stored energy but still be unable to run a desktop if its continuous AC output is too low.
Eaton’s guidance is to total the maximum wattage of each device you want connected so the UPS is not overloaded during an outage. For runtime, however, the desktop’s actual draw under the workload matters: a machine does not necessarily draw the full wattage listed on its power supply continuously.

Runtime examples—and what they do not prove
- General UPS guidance: Schneider Electric gives 5–20 minutes as a typical home or office UPS range, depending on model and load, and describes it as short backup for graceful shutdown.
- One UPS specification: Eaton lists 7 minutes at half load for its SMART1000PSGLCD. That figure applies to that product at that stated load, not to every desktop or every UPS.
- One power-station estimate: Anker SOLIX’s UK article, dated September 9, 2026, gives a vendor estimate of approximately 7.8 hours for a 118 W laptop, monitor, router, and lamp setup using its C1000 Gen 2, listed as 1,024 Wh and 2,000 W output. This is an estimate for that laptop desk setup, not a desktop-PC runtime test. See Anker SOLIX’s laptop and home-office example.
There is no single reliable runtime figure for “a desktop.” The computer’s load, other connected equipment, battery capacity, inverter efficiency, and operating conditions all affect the result. Use the selected unit’s load-specific runtime data when available.
Check waveform compatibility, especially with active-PFC power supplies
Some desktop power supplies use active power-factor correction (PFC). Schneider Electric describes a compatibility issue in which equipment can draw a momentary inrush when certain UPS models switch from utility power to battery, potentially causing an overload or dropped load. This is a model-specific concern, not proof that every modern UPS will fail with an active-PFC PC. Check the UPS manufacturer’s compatibility information and waveform specifications for your system.

For example, Eaton lists the SMART1000PSGLCD as a line-interactive, 1000 VA UPS with pure sine-wave output and positions it for gaming PCs and active-PFC power supplies. Its stated runtime is 7 minutes at half load. Whether this model suits a particular desktop still depends on the actual watt draw and the outlet and voltage region. See Eaton’s SMART1000PSGLCD specifications. Schneider Electric’s discussion of the transfer issue is available in its FAQ on PFC computers and certain UPS models.

Connect only the equipment that needs backup. The desktop, a monitor, and possibly a router may be useful choices, but each added device increases the total load and can reduce runtime. Speakers, printers, and other peripherals can usually be left off the battery-backed outlets unless you have a specific reason to keep them powered. Check the unit’s instructions for which outlets provide battery backup versus surge protection only.
