A breath test for glucose monitoring is an investigational idea: sensors analyze chemicals in exhaled breath, such as acetone, and try to use them as indirect clues about glucose status. The evidence cited here does not establish a clinically validated breath test that can replace a blood glucose meter or continuous glucose monitor (CGM) for treatment decisions. A 2025 conference abstract describes a wearable prototype tested with acetone standards—not proof of accurate glucose readings in people.
How breath-based glucose monitoring is supposed to work
Breath contains volatile organic compounds (VOCs), including acetone. Researchers are investigating whether changes in those compounds can serve as signals related to glucose status. That is an indirect measurement: the sensor detects breath chemicals, not glucose in a blood sample.
The distinction matters. Showing that a sensor responds to acetone in a controlled gas test does not show that it can determine a person’s blood glucose accurately, reliably, or well enough to guide treatment.

What the 2025 wearable prototype has shown
An American Diabetes Association conference abstract published June 20, 2025 describes a watch-sized prototype with four gas sensors and environmental sensors, intended to identify hypo- or hyperglycemic events. The reported results are preliminary sensor-characterization findings:
#1 Best Overall
- HSA/FSA eligible. No prescription needed.
- 24/7 GLUCOSE TRACKING. See your glucose response to food, exercise, sleep, and other lifestyle factors via the Lingo app.
- OPTIMIZE YOUR NUTRITION. Discover which foods work for you and those that don't. The Lingo app shows you how specific meals and other factors impact your glucose, so you can learn from your insights and build healthier habits
- NAVIGATE PREDIABETES WITH A NEW VIEW OF YOU. More time in healthy glucose range is linked to lower diabetes risk. Three out of four users with prediabetes say Lingo was effective in helping to achieve their health goals¹.
- HEALTHY GLUCOSE SUPPORTS HEART HEALTH. What you eat matters to your glucose and your heart. Keeping your glucose in a healthy range (70–140 mg/dL) more often can help protect your heart from heart disease²⁻⁴.
- The sensors detected acetone standards down to 800 parts per billion.
- The dynamic linear range spanned at least 4 parts per million.
- The calibration curve had an R² greater than 0.95.
These figures describe responses to acetone standards in gas; they are not measures of glucose-reading accuracy, sensitivity, or specificity in patients. The abstract identifies VOC selectivity and variation between devices as issues needing further study, and says clinical trials are a next step. It describes a prototype, not a home glucose-monitoring product. Read the ADA conference abstract.
Can you use a breath test instead of a meter or CGM?
Not on the evidence cited here. The 2025 prototype abstract does not establish a clinically validated breath test for glucose monitoring, and it does not show that a breath result can safely support dosing or other treatment decisions. Do not replace prescribed monitoring or change medication based on a breath-sensing device.

A 2023 review described noninvasive glucose sensing as measuring glucose without collecting an invasive sample or inserting an analytical device into the body. It stated at the time that no noninvasive glucose device was FDA-approved for clinical measurements in the United States. That is historical context from 2023, not a complete current inventory of every device or authorization. Read the Diabetes Care review.

For conventional blood glucose monitoring, the American Diabetes Association’s 2025 Standards of Care say that people with diabetes should have monitoring devices suited to their circumstances, preferences, and treatment. The standards advise using meters approved by the FDA or a comparable regulator, with proven accuracy, and unexpired test strips bought through a pharmacy or licensed distributor and stored properly. A meter is an established blood-based option, not a breath test. Read the ADA Standards of Care 2025.

In a February 21, 2024 safety communication, the FDA said it had not authorized, cleared, or approved any smartwatch or smart ring intended to measure or estimate glucose on its own without piercing the skin. The agency warned that inaccurate readings could lead to diabetes-management errors, including taking the wrong dose of insulin or another medicine that can quickly lower glucose. This warning is specifically about standalone watches and rings; it should not be read as a statement about every breath-sensing technology. The FDA advises people who depend on accurate glucose measurements to discuss an appropriate FDA-authorized device with a health care provider. Read the FDA safety communication.
